Isn't that nice to know, the people that are intending to "save" humanity through vaccines are creating situations that could see millions dead.

'Appalling irresponsibility': Senior scientists attack Chinese researchers for creating new strains of influenza virus in veterinary laboratory
By STEVE CONNOR
Thursday 02 May 2013
Senior scientists have criticised the “appalling irresponsibility” of researchers in China who have deliberately created new strains of influenza virus in a veterinary laboratory.
They warned there is a danger that the new viral strains created by mixing bird-flu virus with human influenza could escape from the laboratory to cause a global pandemic killing millions of people.
Lord May of Oxford, a former government chief scientist and past president of the Royal Society, denounced the study published today in the journal Science as doing nothing to further the understanding and prevention of flu pandemics.
“They claim they are doing this to help develop vaccines and such like. In fact the real reason is that they are driven by blind ambition with no common sense whatsoever,” Lord May told The Independent.

I always think of the Andromeda Strain when I read stuff like this. Scarey.

While, I wanted to show what happened just a couple years ago.

The basics were that a contractor to deliver the vaccines tested the batch on some ferrets, the ferrets died and after testing showed the vaccine contained live virus. Baxter claimed cross contamination, however, the labs follow bio safety level 3 protocols, which prevents such cross contamination...

Unfortunately the relevant article has been removed from the server.

Just like viruses for Windows. People started creating viruses so as purchasing an antivirus is a must. Except that now it is done with people!

Freaking Chinese researchers! They throw ethics out of the window and make the rest of scientists look bad!

This is one of the reasons why coming zombie takeover is projected by experts to begin in rural china.

The U.S. perfected small pox in a lab, making it 99% lethal. Then the Russians obtained some of that. Now some of it is missing and who knows who has it. We can't really point the finger.

Real life isn't a movie. Of all the things in the world to be afraid of, this is one of the dumbest.

You know what happens in the unlikely event that a vial of this stuff shatters in a comical fashion in the laboratory? Someone sweeps up the floor and then washes their hands. It's the flu. It doesn't spontaneously convert itself into a gaseous state and spread throughout a lab.

It isn't just Chinese mad scientists creating deadlier strains of diseases.

You guys shouldn't scare the crap out of me before I start my weekend. Is it asking to much to discuss this on Monday? :)

I do believe the greatest holocaust danger to the human race is bio-research and development as it bypasses the safeguards of evolutionary nature. Given the mobility of people and one mutation could essentially extinct the human race - and very quickly.

No, not Monday! Monday is manic or haven't you heard? All the things can't wait but to hop into your easy going head influenced from Sunday. It would be too much as it is, and if we were to put the issue of scaring you with new human made virus it would be too much to handle. Plus you are not a person to be easily scared I've heard!

So whadda ya saaaay... Thursday? Or wait, how about Friday, you'd be tired from the week day and easier pick maybe?

Aren't we the ones who made Lyme disease on Plum Island? Which somehow got to the public?

We have sufficient understanding of quarantine procedures to make that impossible.

Unfortunately, we as a population are quite overdue for a pandemic of great proportion. Usually this occurs naturally, damn irresponsible as hell to give mother nature the assist. This could very well be the next one on deck.

The world is smallest its been in human history. Pandemics could be rather contained in the past. This is no longer the case. Scary stuff.

We're more aware of disease propagation than we ever have been. We're more capable of quarantine and tracking than we ever have been. We're more capable of treatment than we ever have been.

And it's the flu. There are numerous strains already running around the world. Releasing another would be like releasing a poisonous snake into Australia. Like anyone is going to freaking notice.

That would depend on what exactly they're doing. Could be strengthening the strain, making more resilient to treatment. And as you said, its the flu. It fast and easily spread and there is no cure. Quarantine is nearly impossible for virus like the flu as if it was a truly intense and lethal strain, it would be globally spread because it would be initially confused as a normal flu strain.

Ya, they are Combining strains of virus in a veterinary lab rather than a proper bio safety lab... And they say it could have a casualty rate of anywhere between .1-20%, which is hardly an andromeda strain, but still... You think they use phrases like "appalling irresponsibility" to sensationalize?

A super bug created in a laboratory is only a good weapon of war if there is an effective vaccine. If there is, you simply vaccinate whoever you want to survive, then release the virus to kill off everyone else.

It is a highly effective weapon, much more so than nukes as it doesn't destroy infrastructure or invite retaliation. By the time the enemy figures out who attacked, it's too late.

The only small, hardly worth mentioning, downside to that strategy is that the super bug could easily mutate, making the vaccine ineffective and wiping out most of, or perhaps all of, the human race.

And this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper.

You watch too many movies.

You watch too many movies.

And you're way over confident in quarantine protocols. Again, a deadly flu strain would initially be mistook for a common one allowing significant spread time. Doesn't take a movie to see the common sense of that.

They may have created it in order to profit from its cure. That wouldn't surprise me in the least. I just simply don't trust the motives of medicine when it comes to drug profits.

A strain causing a higher than normal percentage of deaths gets noticed immediately: See Swine Flu. It killed a handful of healthy adults and the entire planet went nuts. The end result was a virus less lethal than most strains because we reacted so strongly to it.

Yes, the swine flu was a novel strain, and didn't follow typical patterns for the flu... Even then, had that swine flu been a serious issue, most of the efforts would have been too little too late.

That's without mentioning the push for an untested vaccine whose side-effects turned out worse than the flu itself.

That does not forgive them for acting irresponsibly, and putting lives at risk. For at BEST a potential vaccine that may or may not be relevant to how the virus would mutate in the wild... But, risking creating a virus that causes the pandemic they "hope" to prevent.

It is incredibly difficult for a virus to spread out of a laboratory. Life isn't a movie. Influenza is only airborne when aerosolized by a cough or sneeze. Petri dishes don't sneeze, even when you drop them on the floor. Even skin contact is insufficient, the virus pretty much has to enter the body through the mouth or nose. (or eyes I guess?) You'd basically have to spill the petri dish, get the stuff on your skin, and then touch your face with that exposed part.

Just how retarded do you think workers in a lab containing infectious diseases are?
