Picture a grim police line-up with five young African American men in stereotypical "thug" garb, and a goat. That's just the opening shot.
PepsiCo has announced it is pulling its new ad for Moutain Dew after a storm of criticism this week. Social commentator Dr. Boyce Watkins wrote on his blog that the spot was "arguably the most racist commercial in history." He continues, "Mountain Dew has set a new low for corporate racism. Their decision to lean on well-known racial stereotypes is beyond disgusting. This doesn't even include the fact that the company has put black men on par with animals."

The one-minute ad (the link is gone in most places but you can still see it by clicking here) shows a badly beaten blonde Caucasian woman approaching the line-up on crutches. A white male warden says, "We got 'em all lined up, nail the little sucker." The goat, in a raspy male voice bullies her with phrases, "keep your mouth shut, I'm going to do ya when I get out," "ya better not snitch on a playa'," and "snitches, get stitches, fool." The woman becomes hysterical and runs from the room. As the ad ends, you can hear her screaming off-screen.

Ok as a minority i didnt find this racists at all, AT ALL. It was obviously HUMOR and nothing else.

and then if one simply does a little investigation you read this:
The spot is one of a series featuring an intoxicated goat called Felicia created by Tyler, The Creator — leader of the hip-hop collective One Future. Ironically, AdWeek called an earlier video in the series the "Best Ad Ever."

thats right you read it correctly, it was created by the leader of a hip-hop group called Odd future (its ODD future they actually got it wrong) who is BLACK and the BLACK MEN in the commercial are part of the hip-hop group.

in my opinion Dr. Watkins is off is rocker! SOme might feel different but i certainly do not. IMO this is not racism.

here is another article with the correction

Stereotypes are funny when they are done with a little levity. I don't feel that was racist at all. And don't think I didn't see the lady in distress played by a white blonde lady.

I'm actually less concerned about the racial stereotype and more concerned about what ****ing idiot thought this ad was a good idea? Who looked at this and thought "Yep, that's an effective ad campaign right there!"

Because they need to get canned.

Racist? No.
Stupid? Yes....what the hell is the goat all about?
Will it convince me to but Mt. Dew? No.

If this was put together by a Hip Hop group then it's just one more thing I don't understand about that genera.

I thought it was very funny. Why this would cause anyone to buy a soft drink...that's more of a puzzle.

I am not where I can watch the video, but I think I can safely go out on a limb and at least say I doubt it is the "most racist commercial in HISTORY". I have seen old Tom & Jerry cartoons more racist than what this describes.

interesting i thought this thread for be more active, i guess i was wrong in assuming there'd be at least a collection of people that would think this actually was racist. Minimum, not that i wanted it, but i thought for sure somebody would try to derail it and use this ONE example to show how there is no racism lol

Oh well im glad when people just agree too, i have no idea what the people against this commercial were thinking though. If i was mtdew/pepsi co. I just get the Group/writer to make a statement tell people to lighten the hell up. lol

I doubt it's really racist.

But what the **** were they thinking?

There may yet be hope for us if people actually get the joke and don't make everything larger than life.

I guess the powers that be decided the ad was so evil no one can see it. So I can't comment. The video link won't play.

The rap artist was attempting to be outrageous. This is not too different than Jello Biafra's song "Peeling Back the Foreskin of Liberty", in which he portrays a right wing Southerner stereotype. In the case of the Mountain Dew commercial, this stereotype failed miserably, because people took the stereotyping too literally.

I agree, like i said in the OP, even if someones initial reaction was that of racism, once you find out the writer is black and him and his music group are the stars of the commercial a normal brain should quickly tell you that the racism factor is -0 LOL

now people are free to feel that its a ****TY commercial but that doesnt make it racist.

i think it portrays a certain segment of urban blacks pretty accurately...people pay money to look like that...and practice talking like that...
it goes really weird when whites and aisens try to look like these guys...

i think those low riding weird pants were invented so that thieves can't run in them...sort of like shooting themselves in the foot wearing them...i think white law makers got them into the fashion of the urban black gheto people

should the race of the person producing it really even be in question?

I don't think it is racist at all except maybe to goats.

trying to keep this sort of fahsion lifestyle going ,,the whole gangsta rap ideal is ruinous to society and black kids especially...

even snoop dog ,now that he has kids has changed his tune...

yeah whats with the goats....i would think thats more of an arab afrodisiac .

Obviously this was intended to be part of a serial within the ad campaign to get people trying to figure out how it went from commercial 2 to commercial 1. It might be quite funny and innocent, but we might not ever find out now. I think if anything political it plays off a cop trying to frame black folks as opposed to making black folks look bad.

Either way, you can still make Mountain Dew Glow in the Dark

I thought it was funny. I don't see the connection to how it would make me want to buy Mountain Dew though? As far as racist? Don't know it seems to show the black guys being innocent and the goat being guilty. Although the police officer seems to be pushing the lady to pick one of the men with the dew rag. That seems to fall in line with the ideal that a lot of blacks do not trust the police.

I think this would appeal more to the people who know Tyler the Creator and his work. I believe he is the producer of a show called Loiter Squad on Adult Swim. If you ever see that show you will realize the imagination this guy has. It's not for everyone that's for sure. They hang out with the crew from Jackass if that tells you anything.

i think we need to educate our young that black people that look like this and listen to gangsta rap need to be made fun off...show them having sex with goats isn;t such a bad thing.

this nonsense and destruction of our youth has gone on long enough

same with what we have as politicians...could you see Jackie O stuffing her face like this
Michelle Obama eye roll at Boehner? - YouTube

Apparently I missed that part of the commercial.

i'm trying to show us that we need to get back to family values...good clean living starts with table manners and everything starts there...with table manners ....

you can't have your first family living like trailer trash and have a society gobbling up gansgta lifestyle and think we are going to survive....

hey i like obama...and michele is ok...but they are not the end all and be all...they could take a few class cue's from the kennedy's

I thought it was -- more than anything else -- misogynist. Seriously, no one took offense to the battered and bruised woman in fear of her life? I have a pretty high tolerance and can laugh a lot of stuff... but this was absloute pure and utter crap.
