Drug Agency Lowers Age For Next-Day Birth Control [W:297]

I 100% AGREE WITH YOU! A woman my take Plan B while having a ectopic pregnancy.

And if she does the cramping could cause her seek to medical help and may even save her life.

Scaremongering of the lowest order should not deny women access to a drug with a better safety profile than many other freely available OTC medicines. The FDA remit is science, not superstition or morality.

Funny, I would say that out of hand dismissal like what you demonstrate here is more dangerous.

The woman needed to pregnant with the Ectopic pregnancy before she took Plan B.

Wrong.

"One final, and rather noted precaution to taking Plan B, is that it may cause ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is caused by progestin-only contraceptives, like the Morning after Pill, and means that pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus, including tubal pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is a very severe and life-threatening problem. If you develop severe lower abdominal pain, go see your doctor- especially if your period is late. According to this article about Plan B by Moira Gaul, MPH and Christopher Gacek, J.D., PhD, there is a noted link between Plan B and ectopic pregnancy. “Statements from the World Health Organization and leading medical officials taken together provide a warning that increased risk of ectopic pregnancy exists with Plan B usage. Additionally, common physical side-effects a woman experiences following Plan B usage often mimic ectopic pregnancy symptoms, including cramping and severe pain. Consequently, there is valid concern for Plan B usage to actually mask ectopic pregnancy, an acute, life-threatening condition.”

Plan B: The Facts You Need to Know | You Caught It Here

Study shows Etopic Pregnancies are less common when a woman uses EC:

One study in particular studied the likelihood of women who took failed morning-after pills having an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies are dangerous, and they occur when the baby starts growing outside the uterus. Often, mothers have no choice but to abort these pregnancies to save their lives. Since emergency contraceptives are supposed to halt the pregnancy before it begins, it would make sense that ectopic pregnancies could be a result.

The study’s results showed that this was not at all the case. Women who took failed emergency contraceptives were not more likely to have ectopic pregnancies than women with planned pregnancies.
In fact, statistics supported the fact that women who took emergency contraceptives were less likely to have an ectopic pregnancy simply because they were less likely to become pregnant in general.

Do emergency contraceptive pills increase the incidence of ectopic pregnancy?

Ectopic pregnancies have been noted following administration of Emergency Contraceptive pills (morning after pill, day after pill, post coital contraception, day after contraception, Plan B) in several studies.
The overall risk of ectopic pregnancies are not increased but rather slightly decrease following Emergency Contraceptive pill usage.

That wasn't the point. The point is you can't compare something relatively benign like water to a drug that can most certainly have negative and dangerous side effects.

True, but talking about Plan B as if someone is going to take it every day is just as foolish as discussing water intoxication. Some people are dumb enough to kill themselves in literally any manner you could imagine, but that doesn't mean we should be setting policy based on them.

That might be true but it's different when you are opening it up to children without parental knowledge or consent, or even a doctor's knowledge or consent. There could be drug interactions. Perhaps the girl is already on the BC pill and missed one, and thinks she MIGHT get pregnant or be pregnant? I could think of dozens of such scenarios when it comes to kids.

Sure I can. In fact, I just did. Look, I'll do it again

Water, salt, and just about every substance known to man, can be unsafe if taken in large enough quantities

From now on, children should need a prescription every time they want to drink from a fountain, or put salt on their fries!

Sorry, you are just simply wrong about this.

Now think about this....What problems could occur from girls being given this hypothetically without her knowledge....? Or, if the girl taking this has some sort of indicator of which she shouldn't be taking it and doesn't bother to read the box and takes it anyway?

This is absurd.

Your source for scientific information is a blog called Divine Caroline?

Not a danger. Plan B can be taking by someone on BC, with no harm

That much hormones is NOT good for anyone. Hormones can and do have serious side effects on the body.

I'll just choose to ignore this because it's too retarded.

I'm sure you have scientific evidence to support your claim that taking Plan B while on BC is unsafe

And people who don't want to become pregnant need contraception

Actually, 15-year-old's should probably be trying to abstain from sex. Especially since NOTHING is 100%. I wish I had. I'm SURE I'm not alone either.

Yes, they should, and many do

But not all abstain.

having a minor being able to obtain a drug without the parents approval, is the problem for me.

since a child at a school cannot obtain an aspirin from the school nurse, with a parents approval.

What do you think it contains? Synthetic hormones. Synthetic hormones have tons of side effects. All of the side effects from birth control pills are caused by the synthetic hormones. The same thing in the plan B pill.

Someone already posted the side effects. Why do you think it makes you sick?

Let me put this simply. All of those side effects caused by birth control pills will also be the same from this Plan B, because it contains the same kind of synthetic hormones, only at ridiculously high levels.

Hormones such as these cause long-term side effects such as brittle bones (osteoporosis) which leads to fractures and many other serious health conditions as one ages. There have also been many studies linking synthetic hormone use to breast cancer.

The thing with these kinds of pills is that we don't know until the people who are using them age. Sometimes it takes YEARS before we realize how dangerous a drug actually can be. So basically, we are using our children as guinea pigs.

Now a full grown woman who is fully cognizant of all the risks involved is informed enough to take such medicines. Children, however, are really not.

None of the side effects are harmful; just uncomfortable.

And Plan B is different than BC pills. Please don't lie about easily refutable facts

Plan B only contains progesterone.
B C pills also contain estrogen which can cause blood clots, strokes, etc.
