Drug Agency Lowers Age For Next-Day Birth Control [W:297]

HHS Secretary Sibelius in 2011 [all bolding mine]:
FDA has recommended approval of this application in its Summary Review for Regulatory Action on Plan B One-Step. After careful consideration of the FDA Summary Review, I have concluded that the data, submitted by Teva, do not conclusively establish that Plan B One-Step should be made available over the counter for all girls of reproductive age.

The average age of the onset of menstruation for girls in the United States is 12.4 years. However, about ten percent of girls are physically capable of bearing children by 11.1 years of age. It is common knowledge that there are significant cognitive and behavioral differences between older adolescent girls and the youngest girls of reproductive age. ...Today’s action reflects my conclusion that the data provided as part of the actual use study and the label comprehension study are not sufficient to support making Plan B One-Step available to all girls 16 and younger, without talking to a health care professional.

A Statement by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius

From LifeNews:

Jeanne Monahan, Director of Family Research Council’s Center for Human Dignity, told LifeNews after the decision: “A decision to make Plan B available for girls under the age of 17 without a prescription would not have been in the interest of young women’s health. Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was right to reject the FDA recommendation to make this potent drug available over the counter to young girls. In her own words, the research submitted to the FDA did not include data for all ages for which the drug would be used.”

“Additionally, young people have approximately half of the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) nationwide, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The availability of Plan B over-the-counter for all ages would have bypassed necessary routine medical care for sexually active girls. And a study released in 2010 revealed that adolescent use of Plan B was correlated with an increase in unplanned pregnancies and a high STD rate,” she said.

Repeating nonsense from a Hate Group like FRC undermines your argument, which is pretty absurd to begin with

So in other words, you don't have any sourcing to back your claims and are falling back on "kill the messenger." Alrighty then.

Now you're just embarrassing yourself. But do go on.

I'm not familiar with the group you are referring to, but I am wondering why disagreeing with homosexuality would make a group a "hate" group. I would think that a group would have to actually demonstrate hate and ill will towards a group of people to be considered a hate group, and not just stating political opinions about a specific group's goals.

They do a lot more than "disagree" with homosexuality. They have promoted the idea that homosexual behavior should be a crime

FRG is not posting in this thread. If Hitler said the sky was blue, I would be inclined to agree and be accused of quoting Hitler.

There seems to as of late be a new tactic being employed by some of our liberal/progressive/socialist friends in here.

First they choose only the aspects of the story being discussed that agree with their POV, then post them as "Fact" whether they are backed up with actual sourcing or not, or even if the sourcing they have is dubious at best. Then they proceed to ad hominem attack their opponents by calling them a "liar" or "ignorant" or some other inflammatory language, and dismiss anything that counters their pre conceived conclusion on a particular topic.

It is a tactic that is not intended to further discussion on any particular topic, and I believe is intended to set whom ever they are attacking into breaking the rules of the forum. They should be ignored.

This occurred to me earlier today. We are allowing 15 year olds to get the morning after pill without a doctor's prescription or even the approval of their parents, however a 60 year old man has to see the doctor get Viagra. What a comedy.

Viagra is a dangerous drug

Plan B is not

Actually, it doesn't

But we don't expect everyone to accept science

Science shows that Plan B pill can lead to Ectopic Pregnancy (on the Plan B website). Ectopic Pregnancy could result in life threatening conditions.

Ok, it's safe.

Ectopic Pregnancy Risk: With respect to pregnancy outcomes, the literature suggests an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with progestin-only oral contraceptive pills that are taken on a regular daily basis. Based on the data from the sources discussed below there does not appear to be an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy with the use of levonorgestrel for emergency contraception or postcoital contraception.

What Are Some Less Common Plan B Side Effects?

Having already talked about what Plan B side effects you can expect to experience after taking the pills, it’s important to get into some of the less common, more serious Plan B side effects that have been noted. At this point though, I’d like to remind you that these side effects are uncommon and few women who take the pills will experience them. Some less common Plan B side effects include:

Diarrhea
Migraine
Vomiting
Late periods
Allergic reaction
Severe abdominal pain
Ectopic pregnancy

Clearly all of these side effects are far more severe than the ones we talked about in the section above and while they are more rare, they are possibilities you need to be prepared for. Of all of them, the ectopic pregnancy is clearly the most worrisome. An ectopic pregnancy takes place when a woman’s egg is fertilized by a man’s sperm but instead of the fertilized egg implanting itself in the uterus, it implants itself in another location. Ectopic pregnancies can be life threatening but there are treatments available for ectopic pregnancies and the success rate for those treatments are as high as 94%.

Your links do not say "use caution" or that Plan B can cause ectopic pregnancies.

Read warnings and precautions.

Doesn't matter. I am not against this drug being available. I question the way it is being made available. I think it is Ironic that other drugs are not getting a pass, and this one that has a significant social impact (or at least people will act like it does) gets a pass.

There are other drugs which are "getting a pass", specifically the rugs that are safe

And by law, the FDA is not allowed to base it's rulings on the social impact of a drug. It's decisions are based only on a drugs safety. Congress, or a state, can pass a law limiting the availability of Plan B. The FDA can not. They don't have that authority

Some can be dangerous, but Plan B is not

You really have to start paying attention to language used, such as "appears to be." LOL! I've never seen anybody put so much trust in the FDA and pharmaceutical companies before. Your stance on insisting that this drug is "safe" is just foolish. Below is just an example of some pills which have been on the market legally for YEARS with known dangerous side effects.

Do you not realize that these drug companies have lobbyists in Washington looking out for their best interests. This is just GREAT news for the pharmaceutical company who produces these pills, surely!
