Drug Agency Lowers Age For Next-Day Birth Control [W:297]

Which is all the more reason a 15 year old should not have to have an abortion or become a mom because she made a mistake in the heat of the moment when Plan B could help prevent a pregnancy from happening.

No one would be forcing her to do either of these things by simply requiring her to get a parent to get the Plan B for her so that the parent is informed. So that some adult has a chance to step in and get her put on real birth control, talk to her about the better methods of preventing not only pregnancy, but also STDs if she is having sex.

I'm all for sex education and birth control. But I also live in the real world and know that teens do not act like adults. Even young adults are prone to making bad decisions.

I have had someone I know who was relying on Plan B for birth control. She had a job and is in her twenties. Last year, she had a baby because she couldn't afford Plan B that one time because she didn't think about the consequences of her actions before hand.

Using Plan B to prevent pregnacy is no more using drugs than taking a Tylenol for a headache.

And teens have been known to misuse Tylenol. But this isn't like Tylenol. Tylenol in more doses, at lower levels does not require a prescription. Tylenol doesn't result in people becoming so reliant on it that they could end up pregnant because they weren't able to afford the Tylenol whereas an alternative to Tylenol would have been the better choice for dealing with the issue.

Asking her parent the next day would give her the same protection and the extra benefit of being able to be put on actual birth control and hopefully give the parent an opportunity to talk to the teen about having responsible sex.

I honestly did not know so many adults and parents feel threatened because Plan B is going to be availble to teens 15 years old and up.

Perhaps the news that Plan B will avaible to teens over 15 can be used as an opprotunity for parents, grandparents, and relatives to open up a conversation with the teens you care about by saying you heard on the news that Plan B was going to made over the counter for those over 15.

Then you can tell your concerns about the effects of the drug, that it should only be be used as an emergency back up plan , that it is not as effective regular contraception, that it does not protect against STDs, and your feelings about teen sex in general.

Let your teens know you love them and that no matter what you will always love them and be there for them.

Good advice. All the parents who are worried about the effects of Plan B can *gasp* talk to their kids about it. Then, the kids will know that it doesn't work if taken regularly

Sorry, that is just not true....besides Plan B is debated in medical communities to have reactions to other drugs, and side effects that could be severe. But you think its just fine for kids to take it without their parents knowing eh...Telling.

How's about we leave the potentially dangerous drugs to the prescription level, and not let kids just grab it.

The side effects of Plan B cause no harm.

Yes, many life threatening problems can occur with the over use of Tylenol. Even death.

I don't understand the path liberals seem to follow. On the one hand you chastise parents for not being involved in their child's life when it comes to say, education, to the point of excusing the crappy standards, and outcomes there, but on the other hand think that parents should know nothing of their child's activities concerning their sexual exploits, or access to not only this drug but, butcher procedures like what went on in Philly under Gosnell as well...

You agenda puts kids in danger.

Insults speak not of the character of the target, but rather the attacker.

The point is that we don't know how safe Plan B will be if it's abused by those girls whose bodies are still growing and developing.

We do. We know it won't be abused- no one will be relying on $50 a pop contraception several times weekly, and we have a good sense of what it will (not) do to developing teens, since it is an analog of a naturally occurring hormone.

No, the point is that we don't deny drugs to anyone on the basis that it might harm someone when there is no evidence that it does harm someone

Once again, sangha, and because you speak with such confident authority, would you please direct me to the long-term studies which support your claims? Make sure that the studies include underaged girls, which is the concern here about over-the-counter availability.

I see you still have no evidence that Plan B has any harmful effects on anyone

Let me (and the FDA) know when you come up with some

Oh, you're insulted by that? I didn't name you, so unless you think I hit the nail on the head there, then me thinks thou do protest too much.

No? Well let me give you a hypothetical....Let's say that Jenny tells her friends she is pregnant on Friday at school, that night there is a get together of all the friends in the circle...Now, Megan doesn't like Jenny, so she is also at that get together, and when Jenny is not looking, puts a Plan B in Jenny's drink....Now, Jenny is also on some other meds that are contra indicated with Plan B and goes into medical difficulties due to the interaction of a drug that she doesn't know she has even ingested....Jenny dies....What then smart guy?

Sure we do...The FDA delay's or denies certain drugs from the market all the time until they are tested among the target group...So, you are wrong there.

That's a lie

The FDA has never delayed approval of a drug because it hadn't been tested in children
