President Barack Obama – who began his presidency by signing an executive order requiring the closing of the terrorist detention center at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba – pledged Tuesday to renew his efforts to close the facility, where 100 of the 166 detainees are now involved in a weeks-long hunger strike.“I don't want these individuals to die,” Obama said. “Obviously the Pentagon is trying to manage the situation as best as they can. But I think all of us should reflect on why exactly are we doing this. Why are we doing this?”
If the detention center were ever closed, the prisoners now held there could be released to their countries of origin – if the governments of those countries were willing to repatriate them – or to a third country if that nation were willing to accept them. A third option, if Congress were to agree, would be to send them to maximum-security prison in the Unites States.

But Congress largely shuts off those options in a defense spending bill that Obama signed on Jan. 2.

We need to close this facility. Its unjust and unacceptable on international terms. We need to close the facility down and either try them here in the US or return them to their home country. This defiantly should of been done long ago.

Another "will believe it when I see it" situation.

They should be tried the way they were meant to be tried. By Military Tribunal. Perferably on the field of battle. Otherwise in a Military Court. And no, they should not be brought here. The great thing about Military Tribunals/courts is that they can move.

This should be done for 2 reasons. 1: they are enemy combatants. Whether they actually were or not is irrelevent, they were taken as such. 2: A military court/tribunal can keep the secrets that need to be kept secret instead of telling the whole world like regular courts do.

Most of them cannot be put on trial for one reason or another. Therefore...... you want these jihadis returned to jihad???

Trial or return them. We are not the country (or we are not suppose to be) of unlawful imprisonment.

Too bad Obama isn't going to Gitmo to join the terrorists in their hunger strike.

May the terrorists rot in Gitmo. Looks like some are accelerating the end game. Play on.

4+ years into the numerous broken promises and outright lies by the president and you still believe him?

I heard him speak on this...what BS. It's like, what about the past 4 yrs, you couldn't do anything about it?

I wonder what he's found out, now that he's president and privy to a lot more security info, that made it so that he couldn't just close it down?

It may not be simple but it doesn't seem like he did anything. Like he tried, the Pentagon slapped his hand and sent him back to his office, and he just dropped it.

And before you accuse me of being partisan, I voted for him both times. Not that I've been thrilled with his performance...even less so this term....but I felt he was the better of the 2 choices.

I think it's time to close it. Americans don't care much about the issue, and I don't hear pundits screaming and yelling about the news.

It's just another step in moving beyond the Bush years.

in the third month of this idiot's presidency, 50 of the 90 united states senators who smacked him down on this gitmo closure crusade were democrats

including difi feinstein, barbara the bitch boxer, chris dead dodd, mr-integrity-itself russ feingold...

john f'in kerry, hurry harry reid, jiltin joe lieberman, smiling chuck schumer...

inouye, akaka, mikulski, mccaskill, rockefeller, wyden, webb, warner, patty murray (today's dscc), max trainwreck baucus, kent i'm-outta-here conrad, bobby kkk byrd...

chair of powerful appropriations, one armed war hero daniel inouye from hawaii, said he wanted to close the extra legal prison...

but eric holder, being as dumb as his boss, failed to offer the 50 eager progressives "a workable plan"

jay leno has the answer---if you wanna close gitmo, it's easy...

just call it a small business and tax it out of existence
