boston globe (owned by nyt) this morning:

Russian authorities alerted the US government not once but ``multiple’’ times over their concerns about Tamerlan Tsarnaev -- including a second time nearly a year after he was first interviewed by FBI agents in Boston -- raising new questions about whether the FBI should have focused more attention on the suspected Boston Marathon bomber, according to US senators briefed on the probe Tuesday.

The FBI has previously said it interviewed Tsarnaev in early 2011 after it was initially contacted by the Russians. After that review, the FBI has said, it determined he did not pose a threat.

In a closed briefing on Tuesday, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee learned that Russia alerted the United States about Tsarnaev in "multiple contacts’’ -- including "at least once since October 2011,’’ said Richard Burr, a Republican of North Carolina, speaking with reporters afterward.

Senators said the briefing also revealed failures among federal agencies to share vital information about Tsarnaev, indicating, they said, that the US government still has not established a strong system to ``connect the dots’’ about would-be terrorists residing in America more than a decade after 9/11.

what did the russians see, what did they know, why were they so concerned?

just how many chechen nationals who have been tipped off to us by foreign officials as dangerous are running around our cities posting jihadist rants on their social webs?

too many for the fbi and dhs to keep tabs on?

evidently

why can't obama pronounce "jihad?"

Is there any warning regarding Islam that Obama would accept?

This is why Obama's competence is ridiculed around the world.

You guys are hilarious.

"Don't trust the Russians."

"Why didn't Obama trust the Russians?"

From what I read in the article a Republican says the USofA was contacted ONCE since 2011 about the older brother. Technically that makes it 'multiple times'. Technically.

Now the real question is just how many 'reports' does Russia send this way and how many have lead to anything actionable? We have to remember that to the Russians many things to include leaving are suspicious, they routinely declared their political activists criminally insane and locked them up for years.

I understand how many love playing monday morning quarterback, especially when there is an excellent chance to bash those you don't agree with politically, but the dots to connect here are very weak.

If this brother had gone to Yemen for 6 months, not to visit his parents you might have something.

If he had not been so successful in sports and school you might have something.

If he hadn't married an American and had a child you might have something.

If he had preached violence against our Country at a local mosque you might have something.

But given the number of far more recent immigrants, students and tourists from a wide area that we consider 'troubled'...

given the number of interweb sites and posts that have to be shifted through

The number of tips from concerned citizens that flow in...

There has to be some sort of triage for the overwhelming wave of information. Just what level of dots adds up enough to cause more than a quick interview?

I recall some being of the opinion there is no way to stop 100% of the violence 100% of the time in other categories we face. 'Gun' violence, our actions overseas to secure profit and plunder for our way of life, people opine that one mass murderer a year with a firearm is just the cost of our freedoms...

so how is this different?

Compared to Timothy McViegh this attack was pathetic. There were so few indicators that NOW loom large but in the flow of threat assessment would require confining thousands of citizens without charges being filed.

It seems to me the only way more could have been done is if the level of monitoring the interwebz was boosted many fold. Have Big Brother watching everywhere, all the time and have the legal ability to question anyone who posts an 'anti-government' rant online...

(I think we would lose quite a few members here)

too many dots

he goes to russia, the russians warn us

he goes BACK, they warn us again

they say they saw him meet dolgatov 6 times, prepare a case file

the fbi says they didn't know, dhs says "ping"

he posts jihadist hate---apparently fbi and dhs don't have facebook accounts

dnc's dws plays wednesday morning quarterback:

“We have to go back and take a good hard look at the gaps,’’ said Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, a Florida Democrat. "With each event that occurs like this one, we have to go back and take a look at what lessons we could learn and how to fill in those gaps.’’

just taking political shots against those with whom she disagrees, apparently
