Teamsters aim to shield Boston funeral from Westboro picketers

I don't disagree with much of what you said, but it's based on the content of the protest. I too agree that what they do is despicable and the lowest of the low, however, I'm glad your Supreme Court doesn't/didn't make that judgement. Our Supreme Court has been more intrusive into the content of free speech and I wish it held similar views to yours.
Speech is incredibly important to protect, so much so that we've already encroached past the line in a subtle way here. The ability to stand up for speech we detest is just as important as any duty U.S. citizen have, the actions of the WBC are what I think need to be prohibited and at the time, the action of picketing the funerals of strangers during the ceremonies, my only issue. To be honest, the court shouldn't even be needed, and the WBC has been exposed as a scam, they are an "incite and sue" organization, they want people to violate their civil rights and have a decent idea of where the line is, they provoke until they get shut down then take it to court.

They are detestable people.

The alternative, unfortunately, is something like a recent ruling out of our Supreme Court where they determined, unbelievably, that even if something is true, it can be considered hate speech if it's intent is to offend.

Now that's just wrong. Truth in American SCOTUS rulings has always been held to be an absolute defense, especially in defamation cases, hate speech is something I do not believe should be a crime, though the speech itself is disgusting and IMO the speaker should be judged by individuals(i.e. social consequences), not a court of law.

Most people in Canada agree with you and the court has been widely ridiculed for its ruling. It wouldn't surprise me if it's revisited at a future time and corrected.

I'm very happy to see this. If unions want to improve their image, there are ways. This particular one is a great one. And that they compromised with Hostess is another. Maybe unions are seeing that working with people instead of against them better serves their end game.

Now if we could just get our Republican congress to follow suit.

This makes sense to me, if one is not absolutely free to speak their mind they are not absolutely free. No one should have to self censor in fear of legal consequences provided they are not using speech to directly infringe upon the rights of another(such as sexual harrassment, general harrassment, etc.).

Can we go back and revisit your assertion about christian and judgement???
sweet irony :2wave:

why is it that christians get their feelings hurt when you poo poo their religion but when it comes to politics, no hurt feelings card emerges?
After all, they choose BOTH a religion to follow and a political side.

I never got that.

.

Simple, because conservatives don't treat political philosophy as religion....Progressive/Liberals don't really believe in God, so they treat their ideology as a religion.

This post still smells like your ass being that that is apparently where you pulled this from.

but when someone is critical of your religion, you get all butt hurt.

Alright, sing it with me.....

"Look for the union label
When you are kicking an extremist's fat ass"

Go get 'em, Teamsters and bikers. Rock their friggen' world.

Article is here.

Good for the Teamsters and the bikers. Westboro has had a habit in the past of disrupting and picking military funerals for those GI's who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Westboro is about as Christian as the devil.

See, this is where you have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about...Personally, although I do believe in God, and have a good working understanding of what I believe, I am not part of any organized religion. I was raised Catholic, but have not attended church in probably 20 years or better, and don't really consider myself a "religious" guy....So, your pathetic attempt to label me as part of some perceived group that you have made up in your own mind is an epic fail.

They are hateful for sure...I wouldn't lose a moments sleep should they be eliminated from this existence. I put them in the same category as the KKK, or David Koresh.

Good evening, Pero. :2wave:

Agreed. My daughter serves with The National Memorial Ladies, a group in Houston that attends every military funeral. Sometimes she is the only representative of the Patriot Guard Riders, along with the military guard with the flag that is given to the family. Westboro Baptist Church is too cowardly to heckle and harrass this group of Texans, and that's good. Grieving families should not have to be subjected to such treatment, especially when their husbands and sons have died defending our country. Disgusting!

Exactly

I know exactly what im talking about.
and I know exactly how religion hinders society. It's used as leverage to influence those that do not believe in the fairytales.
I also put you in that same group with all of the other fundies. Vote with your buybull!

I tried to have a civil conversation with you, but once again you prove that is NOT what you are here for...bye.

No. The question was why they were "Baptists". Not whether they had rights. Tax exemption is how they have rights and don't pay taxes for having them. You also have rights but your tax bill arrives anyway.

1st Amendment

The 1st Amendment gives them the right to call themselves Naptists.

Eight Supreme Court justices disagree with you, already ruling that Westboro has the 1st amendment right to protest funerals the way they do. That doesn't mean they can "disrupt" the funeral, which to my knowledge they don't. The Supreme Court, both the ideologically left and right, ruled on the right to protest, not the content of the protest. You should be happy that your Supreme Court doesn't make value judgements on the content of protest - I wish Canada had the same common sense justices.

I have been thinking that too. They are disgusting and lowest of low - maybe tied with KKK - but the important thing is free speech! You cannot deny theirs at the same time, as in the current climate, condemn the anti-second amendment folks. Best way to deal is a peaceful counter-protest.

Who later changed his name to David Karisp. LOL.

I was going to gloat to you people that I was going to make a donation, to WBC, in honor of some of you having no respect for free speech. But I rather give it to the homeless man down the street, so he can buy himself some crack
