That is the Breaking News banner headline on cnn.com.

Fox News' banner reads: "SENATE REJECTS PLAN EXPANDING GUN BACKGROUNDCHECKS IN 54-46 VOTE"

Edit: And now there is a full link to include.

Background check plan defeated in Senate, Obama rips gun bill opponents | Fox News

The Senate on Wednesday defeated a vital amendment seen as the linchpin to Democrats' gun control bill, dealing a major setback to President Obama as he campaigns to expand the federal background check system.

The vote was 54-46, with supporters falling six votes short of the required 60-vote threshold.

The Senate is proceeding to several other amendments, but the failure of the background check proposal authored by Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., imperils the entire legislation. The proposal would have expanded background checks to gun shows and Internet sales while exempting personal transactions. The amendment was aimed at winning over reluctant conservatives, who were opposed to the more stringent background check plan in the existing bill.

Nothing is certain. This ammendment may have failed now but it may pass in another time in the future.

While I'm not really dead-set against expanding background checks to some degree, on the whole I'm glad this went down in flames.... if you let the camel's nose in the tent, pretty soon the whole camel will be trying to come in.

WOOT!!

Maybe, but I doubt it will be any time in this generation, I think the message was pretty clear about the political futures of any yeah votes.

Re: The Senate has defeated a compromise proposal to expand background checks on fire

93% of Americans are in favor of background checks. Sad that 46 Senators lack a backbone to stand up to the NRA and the wacko gun lobby.

93% of Americans are in favor of background checks. Sad that 54 Senators lack a backbone to stand up to the NRA and the wacko gun lobby.

Every politician reads the tea leaves in their own state and doesn't worry about national polls...

Funny how that percent keeps getting bigger and bigger every time I see it lol.

Somewhat true....but with 93% of the country favoring it...I have a strong suspicion that they are more afraid of the NRA than they are of their constituents.

I highly doubt it. Single issue elections are rare and 2014 is still a while away.

And this issue will not die.

Not funny at all....more and more people are seeing the lunacy of the NRA and the wacko far fringe right-wing gun nuts.

And forty states with some version of "Shall issue" concealed carry says to me that most of the electorate will tend to be against more gun control laws in most cases.... and Feinstein's idiocy (and the Dems who supported it) have done real damage to the party's appeal to pro-gun progressives, of which there are many...

...and everytime the Dems try to push a big gun control bill, like Feinstein's new monster AWB, they lose seats in the House....

They want to get re-elected. It's as simple as that unless they actually do hold some respect for the Constitution...

If that is true, then I would say that 93% of Americans don't understand the implications fully.

BS.

93 percent of Americans in Berkley are in favor of expanding background checks. Most Americans see it for what it is, a way of encroaching more and more on the 2nd amendment.

Good afternoon, AP. :2wave:

I'm late to the party...do you know what the final vote was?

How are background checks against the Constitution?

I'm sure percentages bother you when you think a right you actually favor is on the line.

The implications of a background check? Oh....do tell......does that mean that "Obama's coming to take their guns!!!!"....

Background checks were never required in the Constitution!!!

No one is talking about "taking away a right"....that is just ridiculous radical rhetoric.

Good afternoon pg. I believe it was 54-46, but I haven't looked up the breakdown of the vote....

Blame the lobbyist until you turn blue in the face. They are afraid to face the voters who put them in office. That is how democracy works no matter how badly or loudly the autocrats cry.
