Several dozen states are looking for an alternative to the GED high school equivalency test because of concerns that a new version coming out next year is more costly and will no longer be offered in a pencil and paper format.

The responsibility for issuing high school equivalency certificates or diplomas rests with states, and they've relied on the General Education Development exam since soon after the test was created to help returning World War II veterans.

But now 40 states and the District of Columbia are participating in a working group that's considering what's available besides the GED, and two test makers are hawking new exams.

Last month, New York, Montana and New Hampshire announced they were switching to a new high school equivalency exam, and California officials began looking into amending regulations to drop the requirement that the state only use the GED test. Missouri has requested bids from test makers and plans to make a decision this month. Several others states, including Massachusetts, Maine, Indiana and Iowa, are making plans to request information about alternative exams.

Meanwhile, Tennessee and New Jersey are exploring offering more than one test.

The pushback comes as GED Testing Service prepares to introduce a new version of the exam in January. In the first revamp since for-profit Pearson Vue Testing acquired a joint ownership interest in the nonprofit Washington-based GED Testing Service, the cost of the test is doubling to $120. That's led to a case of sticker shock for test takers, nonprofits and states. Some states subsidize some or all of the expense of the exam, while others add an administrative fee. The new GED test would cost $140 to take in Missouri if the state sticks with it.....snip~

Some state dropping GED as test price spikes
Associated Press – 8 mins ago April14, 2013<<<<< More here, way more.

Different tests for some states, some dropping the test altogether and Most with higher Prices.....thoughts?

I think the people running the GED are not very good businessmen. You don't just double your prices overnight then expect there to be no consequences. You slowly increase the price over years.

Aren't the only dumb ones repeat customers?

Funny how all of the students getting their GED in the picture are african-american, what a wonderful display of egalitarianism.

And if they were all white or some other nationality, I'm sure you would have a comment for that too......

Not if it were a representation of the majority. But I probably would have a comment for it, such as "Why is there a picture of a Mensa meeting for a thread about GEDs?"

Well here's a novel thought: Don't drop out of school in the first place!

Nice shortsighted thought. What's your cure for upheaval in the middle east?

Nice shortsighted thought.

Dropping out of school is shortsighted. In an ideal world, high school education would be compulsory and those who drop out would be required to join the army or spend their days laboring for the good of society. There is a lot of construction work that needs doing around the country. That would be a good place to start.

People who take advantage of the GED programs are not isolated to those who don't' know their gozintos (2 gozinto 4 2 times ;)). People drop out of school for a number of different reasons. My son has Aspersers and the school environment just isn't for him. Young women get pregnant. Some kids drop out to work and get food for their families. Next time you want to make a snarky comment think about it for a minute first.

Which is no excuse for him not to be educated by an accredited institution.

Young women get pregnant.

No exceptions for those who won't keep their pants zipped.

My opinion stands. Go to school or become laborers of the State.

Do you have to practice to be an ass, or does it just come naturally?

I suspect that there is a subset of "drop-outs" who drop out early, take the GED, and essentially graduate early, sans the ceremony, because they can go ahead and get started with college, or go ahead and get into the work force. I don't think that is the typical GED taker, but my experience and observation is that it happens with a regular frequency.

Can we also force the liberal arts and humanities majors to be janitors while we are at it? :)

What are your thoughts, MMC?

I am kind of Biased about it......since that is How I proceeded on with my life. As I went into the Military before I could graduate from High School, course I volunteered and was not drafted. So I took the GED, for the Equivalency Diploma. By the Time I had Made E-6.....I had already picked up my Associates of General Ed. So that I could have at least 2 years of College to go thru OCS. Which after I made E7.....I decided against becoming an Officer and remained an NCO until I got out.

So I would be against those states that would get Rid of the Test. As like Liz and AG pointed out.....some people have things happen in their families wherein some may be forced to take care of their Parent or Parents, be forced to take on responsibilities of an adult.

Also I would have to Agree with RA.....on just raising Prices as in doubling like overnight. Plus I have known other adults that went back just to get a Diploma. As they always wanted to graduate. But Never had the chance due to what came up in their lives.

Another issue would be for those kids that want to join the Military but had dropped out. Without a Diploma today they can't in, as there is no draft.

Hows that work for those kids that end up having to take care of their Parent or parents? Caused by whatever accident or medical condition that forces the Kids to take on the Adult Responsibilities?

Well, there are plenty of Pencil pushers with Ph.D's that are out of work. Guess there isn't to many Openings for a PH'D in Studying Crocodile temperments, and Rabbit emotions.

Do you think $120 is too much for someone to afford to take a test which will grant them a GED?

Not for the State of Illinois. Although wages up here are generally higher than they are with other states. Plus up here I am sure they will charge more. I would be worried about those states that want to phase it out.

WHat if they made the test taker pay it? Could you not have afforded $120?

Well, up here they do make the test taker pay for it. I would do what is necessary to take the test knowing one has more doors opened to them with a Diploma or a GED. But what does that have to do with states that want to get rid of the test altogether?

Because they are doing it based on price. WHen the price doesnt seem like much at all. They could simply pass the fee on to takers if they dont want to pay for it.

I would agree with you.....why stop the opportunity for people to better themselves. Hell set up billing and take payments. But don't just get rid of it. Even if the Price was like 250 dollars. One would have to ask is it worth the 250. One time fee to open job opportunities and or further education for oneself. IMO even that amount would be worth it.
