Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide

His referral today to his son suffering from depression............Must be real nifty to be in the fastlane of selfabsolution................

That was an email to church staff. Should he not have explained the situation to his close friends and colleagues? A quick email is a lot better than answering numerous phone calls and explaining the same thing over and over again.

This is rough. I feel for the family.

This is one of the most uncharitable, low posts I’ve ever read. I’m going to be charitable, though, and chalk what you said up to extreme immaturity rather than malice.

Normal people have nervous breakdowns over the death of a child. And they can barely talk, let alone issue statements to the press..................

A "real" parent suffering "real" grief about something "so terrible" WOULDN'T be able to issue press releases. Period.......................

Well it is no secret that "progressives" think they are better than everybody else, but you really have no freaking idea what you are talking about.

A "nervous breakdown" doesn't occur the day of a serious emotional trauma. He is exepcted to talk, and he knows he is. He has a huge number of supporters, and he's likely just running on adrenaline.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Stop embarrassing yourself, kid.

I agree with this partially, which I suppose, my opinion is rather meaningless, but, whatever. Your post assumes that these are normal people, there are many individuals who feel nearly nothing after the loss of a close relative. There are also those who manage grief by dissociating from it, and I suppose that one form of dissociation would be carrying on life as usual.

No doubt. Still processing too, sigh. Takes time to accept the unbelievable.

Or maybe I can see thru the "man of God"'s act......................

1. You have no clue what your talking about. There are many stages of grief, and it affects everyone differently. He could still be in shock, it might not have even hit him yet.

2. It was an email to the church staff, he hasn't issued any statements to the press.

The Southern California church headed by popular evangelical Pastor Rick Warren says his 27-year-old son has committed suicide.

Warren's Saddleback Valley Community Church said in a statement that Matthew Warren had struggled with mental illness and deep depression throughout his life.

"Matthew was an incredibly kind, gentle and compassionate young man whose sweet spirit was encouragement and comfort to many," the statement said.

"Unfortunately, he also suffered from mental illness resulting in deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Despite the best health care available, this was an illness that was never fully controlled and the emotional pain resulted in his decision to take his life."

Seems incredibly stupid of Warren to keep a gun in the house where his son lived who had attempted to take his life before. Sadly, it doesn't look like that gun made the Warren household safer.

You're simply making my point: If you can disassociate yourself from such an integral part of your life, that is a sign of gross abnormality...................

i'm so sorry for his loss. prayers for his family. suicide is simply awful, and no one should have to suffer the loss of a child.

Or a materialist perspective on life.....

Given the individuals involved, I'm sure the parents will go thru all the theatrics and proclamations of grief, but 3 weeks from now you'll probably be hardpressed to notice they'd "been through" anything.........................

Look, I don't really like Warren either but dude, seriously? It's his freaking son.

Or maybe I can see thru the "man of God"'s act......................

Have you ever lost anyone to an accident or suicide?

It can be extremely difficult even for the most stoic.

Can someone please explain to me why this family's personal tragedy is anybody else's business, much less news?

Because he is your brother in life and one doesn't need someone to be political binky twins to have compassion for your fellow brother.

Or a materialist perspective on life.....

It is my experience that such individuals break, but only on their deathbeds.....................................

Tragic events can also be life changing.

Are you seriously trying to spin this into a gun control debate?

I think you're missing my point: "Stoicism" is the abnormal response to such a situation and I have very rarely seen it. It is more normal to question one's "god"................................Or age overnight, or tear one's shirt off.........................

Not at all, just making a relevant observation.

You don't understand that grief is as individual as those who experience it.

But never mind that. How sad a reflection is it on your life that your response is to sit in judgment of someone you don't know who has just experienced a horrific tragedy?

I don't care who you are but losing a child has to be like a permanent kick in the gut in which the pain never leaves.

I really don't know if I could handle it to be honest.

This negativity reminds me the time Steve Irvin died and posters were dancing on his grave. Whatever.
