FAU Student Claims He Was Suspended For Refusing To Step On Jesus

I think so too, because the idea that Jesus CAN be desecrated by such an act is alien to most historical Christian thought................

Exactly. It's a form of fundie christianity that infests the US mostly and has nothing to do with my Christianity. It's sad really.

Just checking for consitancy. There are many who claim the Muslims justified in their anger but would claim this student as overreacting.

I doubt it. But I'm glad you're checking up on me.

The claim that there are "many" who defended the stupidity of certain muslims getting bent out of shape over a cartoon is something of a rightwing noise machine myth. Europe does have a different experience about religious prosecution, which makes them more sensitive to selecting out a religious group for criticism, so some people there might feel the need to bend over backwards not to offend a particular minority religion, but I don't know one person in the US who shares that view (though the Christian Right sure sound like the irate muslims sometime in its paranoia). Again, this has all the earmarks of the rightwing media not understanding that Europe isn't the US and has a different, often frightening history of religious prosecution. That results in a different sensibility. I understand it, though it's not my sensibility.

That's it? For a HoJ response, I'd say that was a demonstration of game, set, match....Now go away.

Yep, you've won the tennis match. Let the rest of us discuss the topic.

The kid should have wrote the word "Obama" on a piece of paper, threw it at the instructor's feet and said;

"You first."

Then the professor would have stepped on it and another rightwing meme would have fallen flat.

Here's a concept: words aren't things. When conservatives and fundies get over this hurdle they may deviate into the realm of reality once again.

Sorry, but a public college with 25K students suspending someone over something like this----I think there is MOOOOOOOOOORE to the story if it is true that was a factor.

Um, no same sex....

lol - no. Another - it was the second time around for the whole weird thing. . . I just didn't explain it enough in my post for it to make the least bit of sense :)

There must be. Professors cannot "suspend" college students. So the whole thing sounds garbled.

Obviously, the professor was wrong.

and now we have the anti education voices wanting to generalize his actions to the rest of the educational system. One idiot in the classroom makes the rest look bad, doesn't he?

In education, it is the 1% that makes the other 99% look bad. In politics, it is the 99% that makes that 1% look bad.

Your 1% number is a pipe dream. I would say most in education are like this guy you claim is a one per center.

Don't you just love how the CBS station here takes the side of the University in the headline?

You have got to be kidding here....What the heck is going on in these classrooms of supposed "higher education"?

How typical. Marxist educrats playing semantic games with the story to deflect, and distort their reprehensible actions thus far....

wow, what a little Nazi authoritarian this educrat view themselves as....Let's see, Marxist teacher wants to make a point about their own beliefs in atheism, So he/she devises a participatory exercise in making people do something that some may find wrong, even shocking, and when confronted by a student that refuses to participate in that exercise, Marxist teacher goes after the dissenter in true Alinsky fashion....

I don't know why anyone pays for this **** anymore....

Thoughts....

Don't act surprised. It wasn't yesterday that CBS was nicked named the Communist Broadcasting System. Look at what they did non their show, The Amazing Race, used downed B-52 parts as props and had contestants learn a song praising Ho Chi Min and the Vietnamese Communist Party. Maybe they are or are not quite as biased and forward with it as Provda of Atlanta (aka CNN), but throughout the last half century, they have have been pretty red leaning.

Man, that's strong evidence that CBS Inc., one of the largest corporations in the US, is a communist organization. It's amazing how they've infiltrated corporations. Good post!

I often sense that "communist" is like "queer in the Con lexicon: It's often just a general perjorative used to describe things that Christians and others on that astral plane, like juvenile delinquents, don't like..........Like Broccoli........

The question is how many of this nuts peers think he did nothing wrong, my guess is most of them.

So stepping on a piece of paper constitutes a form of insanity in your world. Got it.

Whoosh, right over your head.

Is it almost as bad as being so drunk you mistake a "Jesus in the crib" heirloom quality porcelain figurine for an ashtray ?..............

That, my friend, is the unforgiveable sin.

Then a story like this one should be commonplace, and so not newsworthy.

I would say given the propensity of the MSM these days to either not report, or actively bury stories that are either embarrassing, or down right damaging to the socialist progressive movement in the US, and that we usually see a story like this leak out on average once every couple of months, that it is more pervasive than we are told it is...See, the problem is that while you Ditto are usually a pretty moderate voice on some issues, when it comes to education, being employed in the belly of the beast so to speak, your knee jerk reaction to anything like this is to defend it by downplaying it as best you can. But, when you talk to people on the street that have children in collage, or have kids yourself in collage, the stories of absurd assignments, to the utterly weird are all around.

Why would you guess that?

Because based on what we know, the University sent out a notice of charges to the student listing everything from student code violations, to wearing the wrong socks to class from what I can see, then they came out and apologized for the exercise....Face it, this institution tried to smack this uppity Mormon down, and when the light of day was shinned on their behavior the shrunk like vampires at dawn caught outside.

In a class of "Intercultural Communications" tell me, what was that exercise supposed to accomplish?

UH -- communication between individuals with different upbringings. Illustrating the multiplicity of ways that young Americans can view a single object, in this case, a piece of paper with a word written on it.

Here's what I posted in the Religious Discussions thread on this same topic

I think "childish" sums up the student's behaviour. He was not suspended from the university but from the one class where he may or may not have threatened the professor.
