CHICAGO (AP) — Under orders to trim hundreds of millions of dollars from its budget, the Federal Aviation Administration on Friday released a final list of 149 air traffic control towers that it will close at small airports around the country starting early next month.

The closures will not force any of those airports to shut down, but pilots will be left to coordinate takeoffs and landings among themselves over a shared radio frequency with no help from ground controllers. Those procedures are familiar to all pilots.

Airlines have yet to say whether they will continue offering service to airports that lose tower staff. The trade group Airlines for America said its member carriers have no plans to cancel or suspend flights as a result of the closures.

The agency is also still considering eliminating overnight shifts at 72 additional air traffic facilities, including some at major airports like Chicago's Midway International and General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee. There was no word Friday on when that decision will come.....snip~

Well around us they are Shutting down Gary Airport Tower and some of the Private Fields.....course once again blaming sequester cuts. Although if I was some of these millionaires and billionaires. I think they could build their own towers and hire their own people for Private fields. Which if it affects these types and business. Then they should also be able to turn around and make the Democrats and Obama pay the price.

Hmm wouldnt it be better to just lay off FAA office staff? I know that wouldnt have as big a political impact and maybe might show that the FAA works fine without them so I guess they cant do that!

Yeah, I definitely could see them getting rid of some pencil pushers and Middle management, myself. Course yesterday Obama thrw up another 200 Million to Jordan to help take care of Syrian Refugees. Why are we paying for Syrian Refugees in Jordan? I think that 200 million could have helped keep some of the Towers open. Especially the One in Ogden Utah situated around Military Flights.

But that's Okay.....Obama can keep on taking the hit. Each and everytime he throws money overseas. People are hurting here and even they won't go for the lies much longer while watching Team Obama give money to other Countries.

Isn't stuff like this what conservatives and the Tea Party wanted anyways?

If we're going to have drastic cuts to the budget, don't be surprised when they're drastic.

I'm not blaming the Tea Party or conservatives or Republicans for this stuff. In fact, I'm wondering why they aren't taking credit for these measures to cut government spending, which their rhetoric has always supported.

Who do you think those you mentioned would cut first. Air traffic Controllers or Pencil pushing shirts that sit in offices? What about sales and advertising? Middle management?

I'm pretty sure that pencil pushers that sit in offices are going to get laid off due to sequestration as well.

This is what happens after a period of 35 years when you deregulate the airline industry, which I believe the process began in 1978. Politicians now know the answer to what happens, although it's a question I don't think they ever cared knowing the answer to, along with all the other changes that have happened to the airline industry during that time. I would like to point out that Obama wasn't a politician when all this crap started, so it isn't his fault.

Isn't the FAA notorious for having several VPs?

I don't know.

But just because they may have several VPs doesn't necessarily mean that the FAA doesn't need several VPs.

The FAA is quite a large organization, after all.

Well actually to be honest.....most Pols over the Last 30 years could be said that its not their fault too. No matter which side of the Aisle they are on. Although in this day and age of being Politically Correct. This would fall under Obamas Watch Completely. Despite the problems of Deregulation or over burdening regulations, as well as any other factors.

See all those Hundreds of Millions of Dollars going overseas to help other people in other countries. Tends to put that in a real perspective. Especially when crying about Cuts!

Yeah.....but we can pick up the tab for good OLE Joe, huh? Sequester Cuts.....Remember Joe?

Biden's One-Night Paris Hotel Tab: $585,000.50

The documentation for this contract is not as detailed as the London one, so the cost per room is not available. However, just like his London hotel, the Hotel Intercontinental Paris Le Grand is a five star hotel. Again, security concerns prevent these type of contracts from being open to bidding, but if the government was able to do some comparison shopping, the Hotel Intercontinental has a special offer, "Find a lower price elsewhere and your first night is free." The Vice President stayed in Paris for one night.

Actually it was Congress that gave the money to the Syrain Refugees. Congress controls the spending.

While true that Congress approves the Spending.....but not all that came out of the SOS was approved by Congress. Especially those that were pushed thru NFP's and NGO's. Moreover.....Congress didn't just approve the 200 million that Obama announced yesterday to Jordan, yet.

Why would you think that? The white house public tours were cancelled yet the visitor office director is now paid (and very well, thank you) to do absolutely nothing (except to advise Obama, of course).

Yep. Ignoring those pesky "pay as you go rules" by declaring everything to be a crisis or emergency. ;)

Other than political gain (or loss) why are traffic control towers, WH tours, and the like, being closed and the free cell phone program, welfare in all its forms, and political salaries and perks left in place?

Does anyone really believe that we would not be better off with the closing of the 50 or so czar offices and the politicians staying in DC till the job is done?

Which is one example that may not be representative of the whole.

And just because there are no White House tours open to the public does not mean that there are no visitors to the White House.

Just like Clinton did.....as she was the one to release the funds that Congress held up for Egypt. If you recall I had that up somewheres. Moreover with the Saudi and Qatarans funding the Syria Rebels. With Hundreds of Millions in weapons. Let their azzes pay for the Syrian Refugees. Considering it's their Sunni people they are concerned about.

But I don't find it surprising that most of these Private Airports are in Republican States. Although.....they are hitting 3 of them around Chicago. So you see how the Chrry picking is played out. As Gary Airport was the alternative to the bigger one and gave NW Indiana a closer Airport to use.

True. I hear Obama may actually visit it again soon. ;)

They don't have the option. They are cutting both. Sequestration is really dumb that way.

They are getting furloughed. I've talked to them.

Yeah

This totally cracks me up. We are watching how much money we're spending, right? How important it is to use 200 million dollars over here instead sending it to foreign countries, am I correct?

No one wishes to complain about the USA spending up to 800 Billion Dollars on a war in Iraq, that we are now in a hole with--including interest. That's fascinating!

Lets all complain about always having to go chase the horse because of a lack of attention to closing the barn door, but if the barn catches fire lets immediately hold a meeting about assigning responsibilities on checking the barn door.

Correlation/causation.

The towers being closed are in smaller communities with less traffic. More rural communities. Which tend to lean Republican.

You may be onto something here.

My community's airport is one on the list, and I'm still shaking my head. This choice really does seem punitive to me. The nearest airport with a tower will be 100 miles away despite there being a major university and a Presidential library here.
