A French man has been arrested on board a plane in the US after being found sitting in the cockpit wearing a uniform and claiming to be a pilot.

Police say the man, who identified himself as Philippe Jernnard, was a ticketed passenger on the US Airways flight to West Palms Beach, Florida.

The 61-year-old was found sitting in the jump-seat behind the captain's chair.

He claimed to be a 747 pilot for Air France.

Police say they have detained him on charges of trespassing, impersonating a public servant and lying to officers.

"When [Jernnard] could not produce proper credentials he was removed from the flight and the police were notified," Philadelphia police said in a statement.

"[He] was in possession of a counterfeit Air France Crew member identification card."

He is being held in custody with bail set at more than $1,000,000.

I'm not sure if this scares me or enrages me. How did he manage to get past security and into the cockpit of a US aircraft?

How could he not get past security? He was a ticketed passenger. Do you think TSA is looking for pilot outfits in your luggage?

I no expert on commercial air travel, but don't they let the crew in first, and lock the cockpit before passengers are let onboard?

The story is a bit confusing, it says he was in possession of a counterfeit Air France Crew member identification card, but also says he could not produce proper credentials.

Depends on the airline's protocols. I travel regularly and most of the time I see the cockpit open when I walk by.

I also just noticed that it says he was in the jump seat, so I think I was over reacting in the OP, it is a mistake, but not quite as bad as I originally thought.

It is nice to know that cockpit security was not included in the super secure measures adopted after 9/11. Of course the airline will not be fined, shut down or suffer in any way, since it is now up to the gov't (i.e. the taxpayers) to provide airline security. You just can't fix stupid, no matter how much money you have to spend trying.

Who gives a ****, he was caught.

Also, 1,000,000 dollars is excessive bail.

Yep. No sense keeping the passengers from flying the aircraft, they would never try that. ;)

Yep. No problem at all that anyone can get into the cockpit, nobody would ever try to fly our commercial aircraft into buildings. ;)

Happened once in how many years? And this guy clearly did not fly the plane into a building. He was caught. No need to overreact.

9/11/2001 only happend once but that was quite expensive; was it not? ;)

Yeah, when you fight over 10 years in foreign lands over it, the price does add up. Again, no reason to overreact.

I bet we could have whipped France in six years tops. ;)

We could have won a lot of wars in less time, with less American death, and less American debt than we've done this ass backwards, infinity war of huge big brother government excusing excursion against our rights and liberties.

What does that have to do with security? Those security flaws still resulted in 2,977 deaths.

What else can be expected with DC morons running/funding the affair? The first reaction of gov't is naturally to grow the gov't, paying off all of their friends in the process. With billions and billions of new found money floating around, the possibilies are endless for some good, old fashioned profiteering. The proper response to 9/11/2001 would have been to let the two arilines involved (and their insurance companies) be sued out of existance and to have the federal gov't establish strict airline/airport security rules, inspect for compliance and heavily fine and/or suspend any airline found not to be in compliance.

More than that. You must count the ongoing boondoggle in Afghanistan (maybe Iraq too?) as well, as it was a direct response to 9/11. Never mind that the actual perps were from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Yemen, or that millions in the region cheered the attacks. Since they used a "training camp" in Afghanistan, off we went, flag waving and sending troops to fight a "war on terror" spending trillions to assure that we would suffer even more losses of US life. USA, USA, USA...

I can't disagree. This is clearly the path of all government and a bunch of us got all pussified and cried to the government for help. This is what happens when you do that. Clearly. Not only are airports paid for by tax payers, security has been (and now more so) and the airlines get bailout and subsidy after bailout and subsidy. Corporate Capitalism...it's a hallmark of fascism.

Cars get 30K/year. So what's your point? That low probability events will eventually be realized given enough time? Duh. Who the hell didn't know that?

The jumpseat is in the cockpit.

But it is out of reach of the controls. Still a very serious issue, but not as bad as I first thought.

On the ground before engine start it's not like he can really do anything.

This type of crap happens all the time...

The teenager, an aspiring police officer, allegedly wore a uniform and entered a South Side police station through an unlocked back door around 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 24. He was issued a radio and rode with a patrol officer for more than five hours, at times using the terminal in the squad car and responding to five assignments, Weis said.
