US plan calls for more scanning of private Web traffic, email

Why do you say that?

Because, I have no problem with the government looking over the e-mails of whatever company decides to work for them. These mercs for hire get too much sensitive information to NOT be seen as a possible security threat.

When are we going to get to the point where the majority of the people don't think like you? You would think at some point people would start to actually value their rights and liberties and those of their fellow Americans. I'm not sure how many more things the government needs to take away before the people realize something is wrong. :(

Seems as though they are keeping track of employees of highly sensitive documents to this nation's securities. And the problem is?

Scanned by the govt or their own security people?

IKR, I was very much weirded out today when I logged into my google account on a new laptop (my desktop needs a replacement part) and not only did all of my bookmarks transfer to Chrome which I was expecting, but my history and search terms transferred as well. I thought those were stored client-side.

Even the login username and passwords for sites were saved. Its like I never changed computers...

Chrome has always been just another tool for google to take information from their customers. I warned people about this when it came out, but not a soul listened to me even if google didn't hide this fact.

Lol, save it for a Ron Paul website.

I know you can't actually defend your position here, but it still would have been nice to see you try.

That's a fair point, but online EVERYTHING you do is tracked, traced and databased somewhere.

Defend what position? You're crying cause some corporation handling NS information is being monitored by its employer (i.e. the government). You morphed that into your usual Libertarian rants about the government abusing privacy rights. If they don't like it, they shouldn't do business with the government.

You shouldn't use the internet if you're that paranoid. Vauge, the owner of this site has information about you. Through your IP he could track you down to where you live. However, he doesn't. The company who hosts this forum & other sites you visit instead sells your information to an advertising giant (Google) and they get to decide what ads will be seen by you. I don't have a problem with it at all. It's a hassle of using the web.

Whatever. This is par for the course now. Our country has bought a one way ticket to fascism and people are too stupid or lazy to do anything about it. Carry on.

What is the one job of the government? Have any ideas?

This assumes the government only has 1 job. As I don't really subscribe to such simplistic views of the world, I can't answer. You tell me Libertarian. :)

Would you agree that one of its jobs is to protect our rights?

Yes - did you read the article though? Wait, never mind reading it. Did you understand it?

Companies (A) will sell information ("incentives") to the government (B), it will then pass it on to security providers (C). These will search for infrastructure weaknesses that allow cyber attacks to be performed.

Free market at work.

Now, if you read that and think - OMG the government reading through our e-mails! You either have a very real superiority complex. The kind where you think anyone is interested in whatever sexting it is you do during your lunch hour - or you're simply paranoid.

A few things:

1. Carnivore (software) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2. I don't know about you, but when I cut my teeth on the Internet as it was becoming available to the public, and my understanding of e-mail was always that it was the equivalent of writing your correspondence on the back of a post card. If you want privacy, you encrypt. That's why the government faught PGP for so long and why key escrow was such a hot topic for so long.

3. Pretty much every free service on the Internet scans your correspondence and usage patterns for marketing data.

4. The search engines retain and market your usage patterns too.

5. Not saying this is a good thing, but if you really care about online privacy you need to take steps rather than just bitching about what the government has been doing for years.

False choice. I mean, unless you're that technically proficient to avoid detection and "be off the grid" while still being online, which will get you on a list somewhere in the federal government to be watched when you eventually slip-up, the average person is not going to be able to avoid the dragnet that envelops the Internet and communication spectrum. It's too involved and complicated.

In my estimation, the better route is for Americans to voice themselves in any fashion they can if they disapprove of it. The inward looking eye of the intelligence agencies on American people has gotten out of hand. I don't care if you're liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or even neoconservative, I firmly believe that as a consensus, the American public has gotten tired of the War on Terrorism's domestic policies. I say that because I think we all have enough intellectual ability to see patterns. We can also recall the "Good ole days". And we know what's going on right now. So, we know where we've been as a country, we certainly know where we presently are and (I hope) we can see where we are going. And if you dislike where we're going, then do your part, speak up, write your Congressmen or Congresswomen, Senators too! Be sure though, that when contacting people in positions of authority, that you link to information from credible sources, like the NY Times, Washington Post, etc. If enough constituencies voice similar complaints using similar sources of information that shows that something needs to be removed, elected officials would be hard-pressed to ignore their complaints.

I find this bickering comical...... I can remember back the the days after the Patriot Act passed ...... it seem that liberals were screaming up a storm about it .......Now that a liberal government is doing nothing more then expanding most aspects of the Patriot Act ....... why it a just thing .. .we need it .. there is nothing wrong with it ...

Simply put .. it goes like this .. . Liberal .... Bush did it .. it was terrible ... Obama does it ... why its okay .. it's needed .. nothing to worry about ... *LOL* ... Just goes to show you .. . they only hated Bush because .. he classified himself as a conservative .... no other reason .... it can't be the debt Obama has equaled Bush's addition to our debt .... it can't be the wars .... we are still in Afghanistan with more troops then during the Bush area, It can't be jobs ... . we are 1 tenth of a percent below when Obama took over 50 months ago ... basically unchanged ..... in fact there is little that I can has changed ... Obama has carried on just about every one of Bush's programs .. be it debt, wars, unemployment, gas prices, lack of leadership, taking time off, the only exception is liberals are now proud of it . . rather then hating it .. *L*

Not paranoia, it's a simple fact... But I'm glad to note how quickly you change your tune from "not happening" to "no big deal".

I know the steps to take if I wanted to browse the web anonymously, but even that isn't really "anonymous", just makes it so there would be a real need for detective work.

Btw, there's a difference between the concepts of "paranoia", "awareness", and "delusional denial".

Oh and earlier I said that people don't care about privacy anymore... Well, the personified example of what I meant came to make my earlier point for me.

Yes, completely true... But the same also works in reverse. For example; bashing Clinton made me a right winger, bashing bush made me a commie, and now with Obama, well, now it's the race card that gets played most often.

You lost me. Where did I state "not happening" and "no big deal"?

I definitely think you're paranoid.

Scanned by the govt or their own security people?

From your article, it looks like by the government to scan defense contractors who get your tax dollars

The U.S. government is expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic headed into and out of defense contractors to include far more of the country's private, civilian-run infrastructure.

I can think of one thing that should get sequestered and this is one of those. The government has no business spying on its citizens.

It's not spying on its citizens. Apparently a lot of people haven't read the article and just went with the implication by American.

It's about time. How much money do you think Halliburton could make selling secret documents to China?

Seems you and I think alike at times American, several to be infact.

http://www.debatepolitics.com/gener...ails-and-increase-monitoring-web-traffic.html

The U.S. Government has decided to expand a program that scans Internet traffic in and out of defense contractors to include more private, civilian-run operations. Now more private sector employees will have their emails and Internet activities scanned. Those affected include big banks, utilities and transportation companies.

Under last month's White House executive order on cybersecurity, the scans will be driven by classified information provided by U.S. intelligence agencies — including data from the National Security Agency (NSA) — on new or especially serious espionage threats and other hacking attempts. U.S. spy chiefs said on March 12 that cyber attacks have supplanted terrorism as the top threat to the country.

The Department of Homeland Security will gather the secret data and pass it to a small group of telecommunication companies and cyber security providers that have employees holding security clearances, government and industry officials said. Those companies will then offer to process email and other Internet transmissions for critical infrastructure customers that choose to participate in the program.

The administration is separately seeking legislation that would give incentives to private companies, including communications carriers, to disclose more to the government. NSA Director General Keith Alexander said last week that NSA did not want personal data but Internet service providers could inform the government about malicious software they find and the Internet Protocol addresses they were sent to and from.....snip~

DHS to Scan Emails and Increase Monitoring of Web Traffic - Heather Ginsberg

I had it up yesterday......The question now is whether you are willing to give up your Internet privacy in order to try and thwart overseas cyber espionage.

What incentives do you think the Fed will give private communication carriers? All transportation and utilities companies too

You lost me. Where did I state "not happening" and "no big deal"?

Remember saying "this thread is such a fail"?? It's synonymous, you then clarified your position as saying you don't mind the private groups spy on the military...

Then I reminded you that the spying is on EVERYONE, and it is EVERYTHING that gets logged somewhere.

You then called me paranoid... And said it's no big deal..

I definitely think you're paranoid.

I should care about what some delusional child cares about my opinions, why again??

This is starting to sound a lot like the eye of sauron. Quick! Chuck the ring into the sewer and watch to see who goes in after it.
