The number of detainees on hunger strike has nearly doubled at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, US officials have said.
General John Kelly, the commanding general responsible for the prison, told a congressional committee on Wednesday that detainees were "devastated" after their "optimism" was dashed that Guantanamo would be closed.

"They had great optimism that Guantanamo would be closed. They were devastated apparently ... when the president backed off, at least (that's) their perception, of closing the facility," Marine Corps General John Kelly told the House Armed Services Committee in Washington.

A total of 24 Guantanamo captives, up from 15 since March 11, were on a hunger strike and eight of them had lost enough weight that doctors were force-feeding them liquid nutrients thorough tubes inserted into their noses and down their stomachs, Captain Robert Durand, a spokesman at the detention camp, told Reuters news agency. Two were hospitalised with dehydration, he said.

More and more detainees in Guantanamo are on a hunger strike because they thought it was going to close but as we all know they have not. Im not surprised that no media outlet in the US is really reporting on this.

Uhhhhh, is Gitmo still open?

Yes!!!! Finally something Obama is doing will cut the federal debt.....

Good, indefinite detention without trial is unconstitutional.

Medically inducing consumption is far more expensive.

Poor dears - It's like Santa brought you a sweater and you really wanted a new bike.

I guess there wouldn't be a hunger strike if Obama had kept his promise.

I'm not sure - I think you can play beach volleyball and soccer in the sand at Gitmo - not so much in Kansas.

No you can there are beach volley ball courts here...

Gee the lamestream media not reporting on yet another failed promise from the current occupier of the White House........say it ain't so.

Medically inducing consumption is far more expensive.

But not medically inducing consumption costs less and saves the cost of a trial.

I've never really understood the concept of a hunger strike. I mean, who are they kidding? Does anyone care that they are hungry? I don't. Do they think the guards care? LOL, no. What they should do is go on a hygiene strike. That affects others. Hunger strikes seem so self defeating.

Force-feeding them?? We've gone nuts.

Yeah! I mean what the hell kind of country does a silly thing like keep its prisoners alive?

What right does any person have to tube feed someone against their will?? I think it's outrageous.

Awww, you scared of the truth?

Yes Gitmo is still open, Obama couldn't close it and has really stopped trying. I'm not scared of any truth but attempting to derail a thread is just trolling.

I don't know, maybe human beings who don't want other human beings to die?

When someone is willing to kill themselves in a slow and horrible fashion, it is generally worth asking about why they might be doing that.

In this case, indefinite detention by the US military without trial. As a so-called tea partier, surely you're not happy about the idea that the US government can just throw a person in jail forever and never have to justify it.

Let them starve to death. We get rid of the scumbags and the Libbos get to close Gitmo. Win win, IMO.

Because they're stupid would be a good reason why.

Not a person, specific people. Dropping context makes it far more sinister than it really is.

The nations of the world judge us on the treatment of these individuals, if America wants to be a beacon of freedom, liberty, justice that everyone wants it to be we have to start acting like it.

These clowns live better than our service members and the world still hates us. Looks like a waste of time to treat them like kings.
