Worker who taped Romney

Romney's remarks were taped at a May 2012 fundraiser in Florida. In the video, made public by Mother Jones in September, Romney told supporters that backers of President Barack Obama are "victims" and dependent on the government.“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney said. "There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”
Romney later backed off his remarks—though he didn't quite apologize. He told reporters that his comments were "not elegantly stated."

I think this comment did a lot of damage for Romney and it's interesting that the guy who taped him was part of that 47%. I would guess also guess that the reason this comment did so much damage was not because Romney is a rich guy but because of the unitarian message Romney was trying to push while also trying to paint himself as an American who was caring about the struggles of that 47% and the struggles it has. Furthermore, I would even argue that the real reason this did damage was because well, Romney with his other comments about "waging $10K" and having friends who own NASCAR teams made him sound far more elitist than he probably is in real life.

In short, this wasn't a good move on Romney's behalf. Even if he did think it would never get out.

Given recent precedent, Romney ought to be able to sue this person for $100,000.

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

that depends on whether or not Florida is a two party consent state. California is. Other states aren't.

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

Romney was an idiot for saying it. EVERYTHING a candidate says can and should come under scrutiny. Not going to lie...the fact is he was correct...but there IS a much more intelligent way to say it. The fact is that there WERE a large number of people that were committed to vote for Obama and nothing he said or did was going to influence their decision and it WOULD be a waste of time and campaign dollars to attempt to go after their vote. That is all he needed to say. That's all he SHOULD have said.

This also wasn't the only thing he said that was foolish but it certainly ranks right up at the top.

As for going after the guy that filmed it...that would be another foolish maneuver. Time to just let it go. Two shots at the brass ring...theres a message there for you.

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

I thought the individual who taped this and disclosed it was a relative of Jimmy Carter or affiliated with him in some way.

Anyway, what Romney said was not entirely inaccurate in that over the past several Presidential elections there are about 47% on the left and 47% on the right who will vote for "their side's" guy no matter what - the battle is for the 6% who are subject to persuasion. Had he left it at that and not tried to expand on and identify who made up the 47% who would never vote for him, he would have been fine. However, he didn't and he suffered for it.

It's too bad since he would have been a far better President than what you got stuck with for another four years.

let the death threats start!

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

Romney told the truth, pure and simple. The only 'damage' done came from those who were never going to vote for him anyway because they'd lose some of their handouts.

What do you call an honest politician?

Unemployed.

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

Given the recent precedent, Willard has an OUTstanding shot at $100,000 (pocket change for him) IF he can prove the bartender committed fraud by leading Willard into making the statements AND highly editing the video.

The problem Willard faced wasn't just what he said but what the party he was a member of said behind him. The combined front pushed many folks away from the Republicans in enough numbers for Obama to win re-election, and ANY reduction in the radical right wing rhetoric would have worked.

What Willard should have known is what his millionaire Daddy could have told him....

not in front of the help... ;)

You mean the truth that some of those 47% are service members?

Most will acknowledge the left hates the military.

Sorry you can peddle your false hyperbole elsewhere. The fact remains that part of that 47% are service members.

I retired from the army, what have you done?

What's more interesting is why the taper didn't use his recording to extort $100,000,000 from Romney.

Do you deny that the majority of those on the left merely give lip service to the military? That when the do 'support' them it is most often faux support?

I retired from the army, what have you done?

Ah, the swing to try and make it all personal. You follow the guides well.

Yes, I do deny that.

Ah in other words you've done nothing. Talk about lip service.

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

Yes, I do deny that.

Hmm.. you edited.. interesting.

Again, you are following the leftist playbook line by line. Good job. What I 'have done' is of no concern to you, nor does it matter in terms of this discussion, no matter how hard that lefty playbook tells you it will lead you to victory. But FWIW, put your cursor above the little star under my name... since you couldn't figure out to do it without being told.

You obviously haven't heard the actual tape. You obviously don't have an idea of the perspective or what he was speaking about in this tape. You obviously have fallen for the propaganda of the lamestream media on this subject.

Mitt Romney was SPOT ON correct when he said this. The ONLY thing he was incorrect about was he didn't realize the 47% had become the 50% + 1. The TRUE mistake Mitt Romney made was attempting to backtrack in order to appease the lame stream media and low information voters. He should have proudly proclaimed his true intent in saying this. He probably lost the election because he wimped out.

Your hyperbole comments are still hyperbole.

Oh now you change and say this isn't about you yet you have no problem trying to make this about the left. Don't like it don't make idiotic comments

I noticed you still cannot address the FACT that part of that 47% that you seem to hate so much are service members.

But please act like you do something.

Mr. Hat, this is one of your fairer posts. What I found most interesting is that, with all of the hullabaloo around his comment, all I remember about it is him saying 47% wouldn't vote for him. I'm wondering just how public the rest of his remarks surrounding this 47% comment were at the time. I sure don't remember them.

At the time, I thought, "Well, I guess I might agree with that -- that 47% wouldn't vote for him under any circumstances -- but I hadn't heard the surrounding commentary. Makes better sense on why he said it now.

Thank you.

Do you struggle with the English language in general or are you just a selective retard? What part of "the fact is he was correct" did you not understand?

Re: Worker who taped Romney's 47% comment comes forward.

Mt Romney also said those 47% will never take responsibility for their lives. He said they expect food, health care and housing. Those 47% pay for that food, health care and housing, for the most part. To insinuate that they don't necessary deserve it is appalling.

Keep in mind that Romney is now again saying he didn'tmean what he said. Which is it. He meant it and it is true or he was taken out of context and that is not what he meant? Every day it changes.

The guy who filmed it is an American hero.

I'm sort of hoping the guy who did that sleeps with da fish

It was Jimmy Carter's grandson who found the video on YouTube and made MotherJones aware of it, thus making it famous. But he wasn't the one who taped it.

Yeah, there you go, ignore reality and continue with that playbook. Maybe someone will fall for it.
