Mississippi, Most Obese State In Nation, Passes 'Anti-Bloomberg' Law Against Food Regulation

Mississippi has passed the "anti-Bloomberg" law that prohibits localities from passing laws about soda sizes, etc. Not everybody's happy, even though they would be against such a law:

"You know what? If little Alligator, Miss., wanted to do that, that's up to the people that live there. It is not up to the state to tell the people at the local level what to do," Johnson says. "They're just using this to mask what the bill is really about, which is about taking away home rule."

No one ever accused any politicians of not being able to one-up the next politician on the stupidity scale.

Next will be the State of ........ passing a law that prohibits any location from passing a law prohibiting any location from passing a law that prohibits any location from passing a law that................

just so long as they promise not to follow sharia law or other "important" matters like that
it's not like the armpit of the nation has any other issues to address

Governments should not be permitted to tell people what they can or cannot put into their own bodies.

As with any sort of relation, that depends on the nature of the arrangements between people and their governments.

Pretty sad when a state passes a vote that actually increases a citizen's freedoms to do what they want, and some folks find a way to bash it.

I don't care if every single one of 'em gets to be as fat as Arnie Grape's Mom. They should have the freedom to choose their lifestyle.

now if only they would allow people to be brown, GLBT, Islamic, or any of th other things they restrict every day in MS. Oh, and it would also be nice if they felt the same way about pot, alcohol consumption on sundays, and other drugs. I can agree with the sentiment, but freedom is not a concern for the people of mississippi. This is really more of some pointless backlash to NY and the dems. Like Mississippi was ever going to pass a health law. I am just waiting for their pointless legislators to do something about the 5 second rule for food on the floor. I am pretty sure they can impose the death penalty on some parent who refused to allow their child the freedom of eating food off the floor like an animal.

Still, i see nothing wrong with a law that helps the people of Mississippi continue their excessive and lazy living. It is just too bad they don't actually want that freedom for anyone else, or with anything else by a jelly donut or 50.

Fewer laws are better for all citizens.

Current laws that are ridiculous need to be removed from the books.

They can start with some of Bloomberg's stupidity first.

While it is hard not to chuckle, objectively we have here individual freedom protected by the central government vs rights of local governing bodies. A dilemma rather familiar to the Deep South, if in a comical incarnation.

I would say, just like back then, with the serious version, individual rights should be upheld first.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever been to Mississippi? Stereotypes are great substitute for learning and thinking, but like everything else, they become outdated at some point.

Possession of small amounts of pot was actually decriminalized in MS, on the state level - while many local communities keep strict prohibition
on the books - a situation that now could be addressed by a law nearly identical to the "Anti-Bloomberg"

As for being "brown" or "Islamic" - what laws (state or local) that restrict anyone's pigmentation or religion can name? I had visited Starksville a few year ago, and distinctly recall a large crowd of Muslims heading toward the mosque - most of them darker than "brown".
