Competing sequestration bills fail in Senate - The Washington Post

One day before automatic spending cuts were due to hit the Pentagon and other federal agencies, Congress on Thursday abandoned efforts to avert the reductions and left town for the weekend. The sequester is here, and policymakers have no plans to end it.

President Obama is scheduled to meet Friday at the White House with congressional leaders, but expectations for the meeting are low. House Republicans are already turning their attention to the next deadline on March 27, drafting a measure that would avoid a government shutdown while leaving the sequester in place through the end of September.

I've always been amazed by how a bunch of smart, educated people can come together in the U.S. Congress and create something so incompetent. I'm glad they aren't able to stop the sequestration but it is beyond belief that they couldn't get it done when every one of the members wanted it done. It is truly pathetic. The members of congress need to play more golf and leave us alone.

Perhaps they will fail to prevent the government from shutting down as well. Seems like a positive thing to me to shut it down for a while and let everyone work on improving their common sense.

That's the misnomer. Overwhelmingly, these are NOT smart, accomplished people. They essentially don't understand anything, other than how to run for office and win. They've never run a business, never managed a budget of any kind, never built a career other than that of a multi-faced politician.

What's scarier is that they know nothing about the world of today, foreign policy, world history, nothing. They operate fully through strategically calculated sound bites and bullet points handed to them to regurgitate.

They literally have no clue what they're doing on any front. Just look at them. They're pathetic.

Something I heard on the radio yesterday makes me think it is more likely that people will not lose their jobs, just be subject to rolling layoffs until it is resolved.

The private sector and families have been tightening their budgets for several years now. And the government is whining over a 2 percent reduction in budget?

That is the problem in a nutshell.

Reminds Me of 3 spoiled kids, Whining about.... NOT.. getting the Most attention for what they want, as one blames the other for all 3 of their mistakes. IMO, they need to All 3............. Potus, Senate and Congress be without pay and perks.. first, As a Reminder to themselves, that they are Hired Servants, by the Taxpayers who pay that salary and allow them those Perks, ............ but No, that would be Unconstitutional,
let the taxpayers be the one to pay for their Incompentence.... while they lose nothing IMO

As long as the IRS stays up and running I'm sure everything will be fine. :)

Shutting MOSt of government down for a bit would be detrimental to the feds since everyone would see that we don't really need all that government to begin with.

Now be fair. I didn't say they were accomplished. I said they were smart and educated. The fact that they are incompetent for the offices they hold is beside the point. Most of them seem to be lawyers who can't make it in the legal profession or who are pretty enough to get elected.

I firmly believe that if we were to cut the government by 75% we would have a much more effective government. As an example. We have a department of education that doesn't educate anyone or operate any schools. It simply robs Peter to pay Paul. Paul can rob Peter without any help at all from the federal government. Ever wonder why we spend money supporting the United Nations - an outdated, completely incompetent quasi governmental organization that has the worst interests of the U.S. at heart. How much could we save by ending our passion for policing the planet? Let someone else do it. We should take of ourselves. I could go on for hours. I guess I'm not a fan of big government.

Preaching to the choir brother.

Boehner was right to call out the Senate on the bull****.

Interesting that he didn't mention the fillibuster from his own party.
