Senate Confirms Hagel as Secretary of Defense

Let's be real here, the only reason that Hagel was nominated in the first place, and why liberals love the choice is because of his poking a thumb in the Bush administrations eye during the Iraq war, and his antisemitic views....

Call it an overlap of BDS, and IDS.....

:lamo

Seriously, you crack me up. When did you become a mind reader?

John Ashcroft - 58-42
Michael Mukasey - 53-40
Alberto Gonzales - 60-36

Thanks. This kinda points to the problem, which is not democrat or republican, they both do it. The problem is playing politics with things that shouldn't be.

You're obviously not familiar with the foundations of Classical Liberalism. It might serve you well to educate yourself...

In order to not confuse people....you should probably put your lean as Libertarian....Libertarians follow close to classical liberalism.

Likely a lot is related to politics, but I believe that for some they truly feel that the person being nominated by the President isn't qualified or is disqualified for some reason important to them. It's similar to judicial nominations and why Alberto Gonzales didn't get appointed to the Supreme Court, although Supreme Court nominees are for life, so more important a decision.

Wouldn't it be better if people actually educated themselves and not relied on the modern day bastardization of words like liberal and conservative?

There are no qualifications for cabinet jobs other than the president nominates you. Outside of major issues(say a secretary of treasury nominee who did not bother to pay taxes for awhile...he forgot, honest) it is best to confirm them. Elections have consequences, even when you do not like them, and considering republicans have been president more than half my adult life(Reagan, Bush, Bush), there are lots of cases when I do not like them.

because the Party of NO will oppose anything and everything that Obama proposes...even if it means eating one of their own.

Thank God we live in a country where the people are represented vice a dictatorship. I for one, am glad there's someone in Washington to oppose Obama's destructive and oppressive policies.

Something tells me Mr. Hagel is not a very "forgiving" type of guy........................

I was kind of surprised looking at the roll call. Rand Paul, Thad Cochran, and Dick Shelby breaking ranks while Collins, Murkowski, and Kirk don't. I guess it makes sense when you look at their foreign policy positions, but those aren't the first Senators I think of when it comes to crossing over.

It actually is a quite a bit more partisan than recent candidates for Secretary of Defense. Only John Tower has gotten less than 92 yea votes since 1977. Looking at the names though, it seems Presidents generally try to nominate candidates with bipartisan appeal for the position. That wasn't really the case here, but I suspect that was what Obama was going for by nominating a former Republican senator, even though he had rather left-leaning views on foreign policy.

The following is why Hagel got the 3rd Degree from many of his form colleagues..

He was known for standing up against the "business as usual bull**** in Washington".

Also the way the politics of any opposition to his nomination played out. There was an attempt to portray him as both antigay and antijewish: After his "apology", any real opposition from the former vanished, leaving the latter in an unenviable position...............

There's various videos showing Hagel calling out his colleague's bull****... embarrassing them, making them accountable for actions. They hated Hagel for that.

That's basically why he didn't run for office again. He was sick and tired of the dishonesty in Washington.

Honestly, I'm not sure why he wants to be Sect of Defense.

So why did he return? Washington is just as dishonest if not more so.

If you read the last sentence in my post...you'll find that I am puzzled as to why he'd want want to be Sect of Def. I don't have a clue. I'm sincerely surprised that he took this on.

What was the vote in the Senate for John Kerry for Secretary of State? I'll wait while you use your elementary school diploma to look it up.

Ahhh Hagel earned a special dose of ire from the Repubs, he is one of their own who is a true maverick. He bucked the lemming lock-step into Iraq, the conduct of operations in Iraq and dared to be a bit, and it is just a bit more even handed in the middle East.

For shame on him!

This was more a cautionary tale to any other Repubs who think they can go against group think....

And so they can blame a Republican when the **** hits the fan.

Chuck Hagel always wanted to "be somebody", and I don't think being a grower of tomatoes in his backyard would fit the bill................

Utter nonsense

Isn't Michelle already Secretary of Farming at the White House? That cabinet position was taken, so Secretary of Defense was second prize/

I'd say that a man with 2 purple hearts...a successful business man (co-founder of a cellular company), CEO of a couple of biggies...etc...and 2 terms in the Senate. I'd say that makes him somebody. I think he's even got a fairly successful book out. Now he might be bored, but wanting to be somebody...in my opinion...naaawh. I don't think that's it.

wow 4 members of the party of NO actually broke ranks? Now THAT is breaking news. Seriously.....the fact that Republicans hate Obama so much that they won't even vote for one of their own is just astounding and screams volumes.

It's reasonably likely that the worst blow the Repubs could strike at BHO was to let this nomination go through. I suspect that is the calculation of some of the Repubs.

There are individuals more than interested in salvaging themselves from that American debacle known as the Right................
