Pope accepts resignation of UK's most senior Roman Catholic cleric

Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the UK's most senior Roman Catholic cleric, has resigned as the head of the Scottish Catholic church after being accused of "inappropriate acts" towards fellow priests.

News that Pope Benedict had accepted the cardinal's resignation as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh came after the Observer disclosed a series of allegations by three priests and one former priest.

Before elevation to cardinal, O'Brien was regarded as liberal on the issue of homosexuality, noting the number of homosexual priests in the Church. In 2005 O'Brien rebuked Bishop Joseph Devine who had suggested that homosexuals should not be allowed to teach in Catholic schools commenting, "I don’t have a problem with the personal life of a person as long as they are not flaunting their sexuality".

In May 2005 he told members of the Scottish Parliament that homosexuals were "captives of sexual aberrations", comparing homosexuals to prisoners in Saughton jail.[ In January 2006 he criticised Westminster MPs over the introduction of civil partnerships in the UK, and Holyrood members over the liberalisation of divorce laws in Scotland, In July 2006 he opposed proposals to change the law which would require Catholic adoption agencies to place children with homosexuals in the same way as with heterosexuals, calling them totalitarian.[dubious – discuss] In 2011 he criticised "aggressive secularism" denouncing what he claimed was the way Christians had been prevented from acting in accordance with their beliefs because they refuse to endorse such lifestyles.

Why are so many out-spoken anti-gay activists revealed as being gay? It doesn't seem to be actually determined by a specific religious belief but rather some innate self-hatred that causes them to speak out against that which they themselves practice.

I don't think that many are, it just sticks in your mind when they do since it is more ironic--kind of the way in my mind I think it is always black lawmakers representing poor districts who get caught in bribery schemes. It just requires you think that thought through.

That said, apparently the incredible mismanagement of the Vatican is why the Pope is throwing in the towel. I would have thought he would have known since he was John Paul's right hand man, but apparently he had no clue as to how bad it was.

I will say this for the Catholic Church... After a couple thousand years... at least it's learning to police itself... even if it has taken a lot of outside pressures to get it to this point.
