Philadelphia (CNN) -- Caroline Pla has been playing football since kindergarten, and for the past two years, the 11-year-old has been knocking opposing players on their butts.

It never occurred to her that someone might need to protect her from the sport she adores.

Her playing time with the Catholic Youth Organization ended after last season when the Archdiocese of Philadelphia enforced its "boys only" policy for football, sidelining the All-Star guard and defensive end.

Is it specifically for the schools? If so then who's going to stop them if they start up their own league independent of a school? There is no reason for schools to continue an unpopular sport (assuming it was unpopular). In other words, let's not be hasty with the judgment when we're clearly lacking more details.

Tempest, meet teapot. Girls mature faster than boys, and yes, for the moment she can knock boys down in football. That won't be true for much longer.

I dont play football so none. But I understand your point and yes it is a societal problem based on religious dogma. Fact is the best female football player ever (Marta) learned her trade by playing against boys in Brazil and could if she was allowed by the male dominated football associations... play in any top flight male football team.

When a boy is tackled by a 200# player, there's an explosion of slugs and snails and puppy dog tails. Girls, on the other hand, are filled with sugar and spice and everything nice. If you're a 200# guy? Which one are you gunna' nail?

I don't know. If she can handle it, I don't see why not. To me, common sense means that if a person is able to do something, their gender should not be an obstacle. Maybe someday when the boys mature, she won't be as able to do it on a high level. That's fine, if she can't do it anymore, then she can't do it anymore.

It just seems to me like you're saying that common sense dictates that girls can't do some things simply because they don't have a penis. I've never seen a football player use his penis on the field (Thank God. Though that may make the sport more popular among women....)

Wow, believe it or not, and Christianity aside, I actually agree with you here. American football is a dangerous sport, but you know what? Cheerleading is MORE dangerous. So I say if she wants to play, and she meets qualifications to play the game, and makes the team, I say let her play.

It would be fairer if they had physical standards for everyone. Minimum/Maximum position weights kinds of things. Do you see it as dangerous (forget political correctness) for an 80# girl to be playing on the field with players (of either sex) that outweigh her by 75-100 pounds? I do.

The school doesn't mention any concern about safety. The problem is that girls and boys will *gasp* in contact with each other.

Also, she is #110 and I see no mention of any 200# players. However, I did see this:

"We didn't make a big deal about it," said Reichwein. "Anyone who went head-to-head with her ended up on the ground. After a week, (her gender) was laid to lest."

With all the changes that are taking place in football today concerning hits, and such, the game is nowhere near as jarring as it used to be.

Don't you think it's telling that you need to cite the "best girl player" and point out she could "hold her own"? Seriously, the fact that ideology can trump basic science for some of you people, as you howl about religious dogma, must be some of the funniest **** I got to read on here in a long time

I doubt it has anything to do with safety at all. Just the church being prudish (though, the fact that boys are getting boners, and the girls tits, just happens to coiuncide with muscular development). But that doesn't mean the "we are all the same" talk is any less moronic. There are clear differences between the sexes that impact physical development
