Pope resigns

Does he get demoted back to Cardinal or is he just John?

That I don't know, but I do think he will be absent of any decisions or actions involving the church again so I don't know if there is such thing as a "retired" cardinal rank or how that works.

In the 1100s a great Prophet by the name of St. Malachy predicted with amazing accuracy, every pope that ever existed. Up until this last one. He predicted that Pope Peter The Roman, would be the last pope. The Saint's prophecies is held in high regard within the hierarchy of the Church, and it's interesting to see the black pope Cardinal Peter Turkson as the favorite to replace Benedict. Will he choose the name Peter the Roman or something similar?

Kind of freaky if you ask me.

Many American Catholics will demand Ronald Reagan be made Pope. They will insist the fact that he is dead and wasn't a Catholic shouldn't be a reason to deny the world his greatness.
Why would they do that? Most Catholics are liberal. A even greater majority of them would be liberal if not for the abortion issue.

Most retired clergy retain the rank they had, and can be called upon to "fill-in" when necessary. My assumption is that he would return to being a Cardinal, but retired, and no longer involved in any real day-to-day proceedings.

Did see that there is no such thing as an interim Pope, so it should stay vacant until filled.

Don't know how you can see it that way. Most liberals are for birth control and the Roman Catholic Church is against that.

Most people that are religious, more specifically most Roman Catholics, don't follow the teachings 100%.

In fact, I would be willing to be that nowadays, people don't like to be pigeonholed, and purposefully move away from stereotypes.

The majority of Catholics in America voted for President Obama, we're fairly liberal in the US.

Good question. In the US our former Presidents still maintain the title of "President" for life and a lot of the amenities such as Secret Service protection, access to Camp David (but so do a lot of people who were never President. Getting to stay at Camp David for a weekend is even on my bucket-list, am I just a peon ). I love these history making events as we get to watch it all happen in our lifetimes.

Yes but most liberals understand that pre-maritial sex will happen, condoms and other birth control are needed, divorce happens, etc which are all things the church is against. Most liberals I know of are not Roman Catholics, they are Christians, non-demoninational, agnostic, or atheists.

Sometimes the elderly just hit a wall and it all goes downhill real fast. The body can only last so long.....

Can't speak for anyone but myself, but I wouldn't have a problem with a black Pope. The Church's longstanding presence in non-Anglo-Saxon areas would eventually lead to more and more minority clergy at various levels.

I didn't even think of the race but it's good have a variety of people who can relate to everyone so a black pope would be fine but I want an American Pope too!

I think you would be surprised by the make-up of today's Roman Catholics. If you want to find more conservative Catholics, check out the Byzantine Catholics. They are more old school.

To quote Father Guido Sarducci

Father Guido Sarducci said:
To be made a saint in-a the catholic church, you have to have-a four miracles. That's-a the rules, you know. It's-a always been that-a. Four miracles, and-a to prove it. Well, this-a Mother Seton-now they could only prove-a three miracles. But the Pope-he just waved the fourth one. He just waved it! And do you know why? It's-a because she was American. It's all-a politics. We got-a some Italian-a people, they got-a forty, fifty, sixty miracles to their name. They can't-a get in just cause they say there's already too many Italian saints, and this woman comes along with-a three lousy miracles. I understand that-a two of them was-a card tricks.

LOL, as an American sort of Catholic with Italian heritage I don't know if I should be offended by this guy but that was pretty funny.

My only question is how long will it take to elect the next pope? Will it take a couple days, a couple weeks, or at worst a couple of months?

SNL alumni, from a town near me in Ohio, from the 70s and 80s. His skits were always great.

Oh cool, I had to google him, I'm not that old

Oh great another pope election. I wonder how many will try the approach of former cardinal rodrigo Borgia?

This is actually pretty interesting and has me wondering "Why?" There's gotta be something. Not like he needs to focus on his family.

Well this is exciting. Hopefully he just takes the Church with him.

True. I thought all popes were supposed to be elected for life, and the only yield the papacy on their death. Popes don't just resign for nothing.

He's not required to die in his position according to Canon Law.

Given that Pope John Paul looked like he could barely hold his head up toward the end of his life, yet he was Pope until he died, the health reason thing seems a little surprising. Seemed like there was always some controversy around this Pope.

My thoughts exactly. The investigative documentary recently released, Mea Maximus Culpa, has exposed that the pedophilia scandal cover-up leads right to his doorstep and pretty much stops there.

I wonder if this has anything to do with it.

One thing for sure, Pope's have remained in office with one foot in the grave for centuries. I am sure that there is more to this than meets the eye.

We can only assume the reason since we don't know the facts.

Somebody's been watching The Borgias. Relax, real life is not like that. Besides, Borgia was a special case, after all, he was jewish and infiltrated his way into the vatican using jewish support from italy and spain, and not a devout christian.

There is absolutely no evidence supporting that claim.

I'm betting he has some sort of debilitating decease (another poster said maybe Alzheimer) that would keep him from being an effective leader.
