Obama: "No doubt" Congress will pass immigration, gun bills in coming months - Political Eye - CBS News
There's more bipartisan support in Congress for comprehensive immigration reform than gun control legislation, President Obama said tonight during an interview with Univision, but qualified that even under his proposal, illegal immigrants shouldn't be harboring expectations that they'll be granted citizenship "manana."

"Even under our proposal, this is not a situation where overnight, suddenly people all find themselves as citizens," Mr. Obama told the Spanish-language television network. "They're going to have to go to the back of the line. We're going to have to clear out the existing line, backlogs we have in terms of illegal immigrants, because they did it the right way. We shouldn't punish them for breaking the law.

"...What we don't want to do is to create some vague prospect in the future that somehow comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship will happen manana," he continued, chuckling softly at the somewhat awkward injection of the Spanish word for "tomorrow." "But we have to put that in place at the outset, and make sure people are clear that this pathway is real and not just a fantasy for the future."

Asked whether he was in a standoff with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., the son of Cuban immigrants who has said he will not support a bill that does not put border control ahead of a path to citizenship, Mr. Obama said no, but pointed out that the number of people crossing the border illegally has dropped "about 80 percent since 2000."

Meanwhile, despite facing more resistance from the right on tightening gun laws, he said he has "no doubt" that Congress will be able to put through legislation on gun control, as well as immigration.

"On the gun issue, you're starting to see gun owners, people who traditionally have opposed gun control, saying, 'You know what, when 20 of our children are shot by somebody who is disturbed, and when it is that easy to get these high-clip magazines that can fire off hundreds of shots in a few minutes, then it's time for us to do better job on background checks, to get control of these magazine clips, to really crack down on gun trafficking," Mr. Obama said in the Univision interview.

I can see some immigration bills passing, but there is no way gun control is getting through the House. Saying he has "no doubt" seems like a bad choice of words, what will he say if the bills don't go through?

He will likely say that the GOP is going against the will of the majority of Americans on this particular subject, and that they should keep that in mind in the 2014 elections.

Somebody think of the children, etc.

"It's Bush's fault!" In short, same old same old.

It'll be Boehner's fault. But at least you guys will lose your excuse of saying "Bush is out of office..."

Politicians always say crap like this. Nothing new to see.

With 92% public support for extending background checks for all gun sales, those that oppose it in the House, do so at their own political risk. When have we ever seen this strong public support for anything?

Since when does anyone hold barrack hussien obama accountable for anything he says? Off topic but I recall those responsible for killing our ambassador and three others in Benghazi would be held accountable - any arrests?

Got a link to that study? I don't think a click on from the Brady Campaign web site is going to cut it.

The details will cause many American's to balk at that notion.

Gallup poll conducted on Jan. 19-20, 2013 -

"An overwhelming majority of 91% said they would favor requiring background checks for all guns sales, including private sales and sales at gun shows. Support for universal background checks crossed party lines, with 97% of Democrats, 92% of Republicans and 86% of Independents voting "for" the proposal."

Poll Shows Majority Favor Obama's Gun Plan

Too bad constitutional rights aren't up for popular vote. :2razz:

If Obama could ever learn to shut up, even for a day, the congress may be able to work out something on immigration - but it won't be on his terms. Gun "control" is an entirely different story - I don't have figures, but I'd guess that there are about an equal number of members of both Houses who favor some action on immigration reform as are opposed to some action on gun control. However, if Obama keeps sermonizing and rushing to the front of the line, he will irritate enough members to end any hope of either passing.

Best thing Obama could do for the country is to get his PGA card and leave governing the country to the adults.

Obviously, 91% do not believe that background checks are a violation of constitutional rights.

Well, if you have information as to who they are and where to find them maybe you should pass on that info.

Don't think that the bill will just include, "Extended Background Checks". They will shove some small things in there, that most people won't notice. I'll use the "PIPA and SOPA" bills as an example. They put them in with bills that "Protect our children from child predators and hackers", just so they can say to the opposing party, You can't deny this bill or you don't want our children to safe."

I want to see this bill of course before I make my stance permanent, But always, Politicians try to sneak those unpopular little clauses and such in with popular bills.

Democracy at its' finest.

Obviously, 91% do not believe that background checks are a violation of constitutional rights.

According to - up to 9% of the public, and that's being generous.

According to the definition of the word at the time of the writing of the second amendment you are 100% wrong.

You mean only to people that understand the definition of infringement.

I mean only to people who define infringement in your special way.

Or we could just legally sell guns to crazy folks. Clearly that's been a really good strategy, and exactly what the founders intended.

According to the definition of the word "person" at that time, it didn't mean black people. We can't just take everything according to the meaning of words then.

You mean in the correct way and not in a completely dishonest bull**** kind of way like you think you can get away with. Is that about right?

Or we could just legally sell guns to crazy folks. Clearly that's been a really good strategy, and exactly what the founders intended.

Yeah, because it doesn't stop them from having guns. Good job keeping up with how rights work and how the second amendment works.

So you are going to try to defeat me with a subjective term argument? Good luck with that.

Yeah, because it doesn't stop them from having guns. Good job keeping up with how rights work and how the second amendment works.

Then we something that does keep them from having guns. Here's a primer for you: Crazy guy gets an idea in his head to shoot up a McDonald's, so he goes to buy a gun and then kills 20 people because the voices in his head tell him to. Or, background checks turn up that he was just released from the mental ward where he was hospitalized for schizophrenia, and he can't buy it. Not legally at least. Murder laws don't deter murderers, but that doesn't mean we make murder legal.

According to the definition of the word at the time of the writing of the second amendment you are 100% wrong.

That's your opinion.
