and if you cannot afford the tip, then you cannot afford the meal, and should not eat there
That's bull****, of a kind you don't usually spew. You're rather emotional here, which is also unusual.
Many times in this thread I said the pastor was a jerk. I even mocked her little note.
But what I say, I base on the fact that every single person on this Earth is a jerk on some days. Do you want to be judged by one of your slip-ups being posted on the Internet, and have everyone and their brother assume you're a horrible, horrible person? That's what you're doing here.
And do you want that kind of hatred coming down on someone in the name of your company?
i would have fired her ass in a heartbeat for targeting a customer.
She brought the religion that she and I presumably share into it and brought God up as a reason to not share her money. If I read the receipt correctly, she even signed it as "Pastor". That's a terrible example. If she had just not tipped and left some mean comment on the receipt unrelated to her faith, I'd probably agree with you more, but, to me, it's worse because she's supposed to exemplify the love of Christ.
I've never seen a restaurant insist on that. I've seen them ask their diners to do it, but never seen it be mandatory. I like being a generous tipper. Servers work hard for their money. They deserve it. I overtip off-setting others who think like you do -- so that waitstaff can make a decent living.
You know what bothers me most about what the pastor did? She brought the religion that she and I presumably share into it and brought God up as a reason to not share her money. I don't think the Pastor's a bad person. I don't know her. She did say in the article she was embarrassed. It looks to me like she's getting a much deserved and needed lesson in humility. I hope she takes it to heart and learns from this.
It's also that stupid decision of hers which got the receipt posted online. Had she decided to just be a douche, it wouldn't have become a story. But she decided to be a douche in God's name.

I agree, Tuck. It's the apparent hypocrisy that makes the story.

Do you think the pastor was a jerk? YEP absolutely
Do you think the waitress should have been fired. Tough call, depends on the employee handbook, i wouldnt have fired her but at the same time not sure i can point to anything saying she shouldnt have been fired.
I would have suspended her and thats it.

I don't think she did anything wrong. What she does in her personal life has nothing to do with her job.

But this illustrates the entitlement mentality of some servers to their 18%.
Actually this illustrates your assumption that this server didn't do a superb job at serving this pastor and just got stiffed. We don't know about her service to make an assumption that she just felt "entitled".
What we do know is the Pastor acting like an asshole and the server responded in an assholish way.
Unless the tip is specifically stated will be added, it can not. We do sometimes go to Applebee's and there is NOT an automatic 18% tip nor is this stated on the menu.
So this was just a trick add-on, for people who (like us) do not audit restaurant checks - meaning off course then a double tip - the secret one just added on AND what is left at the table. Anothers words for that is "fraud and theft."
I don't disagree in principle with either of you, and you both manage to discuss it rationally and coolly. Again, note where I mocked what she said about giving "God" 10%.
But in truth, if the only thing I knew I about Gardener was his behavior in THIS thread (especially his hissyfit about me giving her a "pass" because she's a Christian pastor and in my "eyes" that means she can do no wrong), I would take my business to one of his competitors.
The waitress hurt business by embarrassing a customer and possibly exposing the business to legal liability. Those in the congregation that like their pastor will not longer go to that restaurant.
Gardener's just always had a passionate belief that people should live up to what they claim they believe.
I don't think she did anything wrong. What she does in her personal life has nothing to do with her job.
Would you feel the same if she wrote insulting things about her employer on a website?
Entitlement mentality.
