Deadly Alabama school bus shooting leads to standoff with suspect, 6-year-old

I agree. He will probably off the kid and himself.

This seems to be a "Ruby Ridge" of sorts.

I suppose pumping the bunker with anesthetics would work - it would be risky because it could potentially kill both.

If he is prepper then I suppose he would have extensive ventilation and air filtration systems....I doubt that would work either. Plus, that door to the bunker maybe sealed tighter than Fort Knox.

If they're communicating through a PVC pipe gas can be introduced (use a small hose and pressurized gas). The problem of course is twofold at that point - finding a gas that will knock him out for long enough without killing the child and then breaking into the shelter, which I suppose is reinforced and possibly boobytrapped.

Look, the guy has to have a buddy or two, get them to talk him out. Otherwise, I don't see there's much they can do that doesn't end the six year old.

Sad.

Alabama Hostage Standoff: Alleged Kidnapper Has Stayed in Bunker for 8 Days

Just wondering why THIS particular super drama standoff story isn't getting the Nancy Grace-like 24/7 live news coverage. It's got all the elements... handicapped hostage, unbelievably stupid murderer, several days locked in a bunker he dug communicating through a pvc pipe with the police.

Alabama Hostage Standoff: Alleged Kidnapper Has Stayed in Bunker for 8 Days

The 5-year-old boy being held hostage by a retired man who allegedly abducted him at gunpoint is in a 6-by-8-foot bunker, where his captor has been known to hold up for eight days, police said.

School bus driver Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, tried to prevent the kidnapping Tuesday, but was allegedly shot to death on his bus by Jimmy Lee Dykes, a 65-year-old former truck driver.

Police Chief James Arrington of Pinckard, Ala., said the bunker, which Dykes built in his backyard, is 4 feet underground and has a 60-foot plastic pipe coming out of it. Dykes has been communicating with police through the pipe.

"He will have to give up sooner or later because [authorities] are not leaving," Arrington said. "It's pretty small, but he's been known to stay in there eight days."

Worst Hostage Crises: Some of the World's Worst Situations

Dykes is known to hold anti-government views, Arrington said. "He's against the government, starting with Obama on down," he said.

Dykes' property is in Pinckard's police jurisdiction in Dale County. Arrington said that authorities have had trouble with Dykes in the past.

"I never had any problem with him before," he said."The county has, but not me."

Dykes boarded the bus Tuesday and said he wanted two boys, 6 to 8 years old. As the children piled to the back of the bus, Dykes allegedly shot Poland four times, then grabbed the child at random and fled, the AP reported.

Now all attention in the community near Midland City, Ala., is on the boy's safety. The police have not identified the boy, whom Dykes has allowed to watch TV and receive medication sent from home, according to state Rep. Steve Clouse.

The boy's mother is secluded at the scene with law enforcement, according to ABC-affiliated station WDHN-TV.

Police say Dykes likely has enough food and supplies to remain underground for weeks. It is unclear whether he has made any demands from the bunker-style shelter on his property.

The young hostage is a child with autism.

I hope the little boy comes out of this safely.

I don't want to be "that guy", but I posted a thread on this yesterday and its still on page one...

I guess the people here follow the news closer. Most of the people I've talked to today did not know about this.

I would have thought that something like this would get a lot more coverage.

A missing blonde girl get's raging coverage from they Nancy Grace's so much so that main stream news and pundits feel they have to pick it up and mention it. This isn't a whodunit finger pointing... it's live and happening right freegin' now. I can't believe they aren't all over this drama with media bugging the cops to let them put a live feed wire camera down the pvc pipe.

What a horrible story. :\ Hope the kid comes out alright...well, as best as he could possibly after a traumatic experience like this.

The amount needed to drop the man would kill the kid.

That is why I hate the media. This story doesn't sell, but when they realize it will (like if the boy is killed) I promise you they will go nuts with it (gun control, mental healthcare, drama, police failure, etc.) when they realize it will sell.

This is not so far from home for me. It is really sad. I am wondering if they can dig quietly with shovels down to the tunnel. Might require a media black out in case he has a tv or something.

We are now in Day 3 of the hostage situation with no new updates. It is still a complete stalemate.

Our local news passes along updates a bit faster than the national media. You can look here...

WSFA 12 News: News, Weather and Sports for Montgomery, Alabama - WSFA.com: News Weather and Sports for Montgomery, AL.

I think the lack of updates and information is being requested by the police, because they know he has a TV and don't want him to hear anything that could affect their negotiations. I'm hoping they are making progress and just can't say anything yet.

This will not end well.

Realistically, the odds are against a good outcome. I wonder if they could breach the access point and simultaneously deploy something like a M84 stun grenade through the pipe. It would be a huge risk, but at least with the limited information we have, going in looks like the only chance for a happy ending.

About the kids only chance appears to be if he bonds with the guy which is unlikely given his mental state. Other than that IDK. If the pipe had no screen and it were better weather, I'd toss cups of ants or a yellow jackets nest into the pipe before I'd drop a stun grenade in, or maybe pump something in that might effect him before the kid like carbon monoxide or something. It is a tough tough call. My guess is that if they try something, they would distract the man at the pipe, breach the door, and if the pipe were a straight shot, try popping a few rounds of buckshot into his face when he was talking to them.

I hope the kid comes out safely and the hostage taker killed.

Wise assumption. Then I'm glad he isn't getting the ego stroke of seeing himself on the news nonstop for what he's done and doing.

Well if he is talking into a tube...you don't need a 1 shoot out. Just one shot. But idk if he is putting his mouth at the tube or not.

Idk though. This is tough. There really doesn't seem to be an answer to this.

Yes, I don't know if that would be possible or not. You can pretty much count on this guy putting the gun in his own mouth and pulling the trigger before this is done.

So I think you almost have to do something other than to wait for him to kill the kid and them himself.

Damn , we can put a man on the moon but can't get a kid out a bunker.

I can't imagine the stress that is on the negotiators and rescue team.

This "exclusive" daily mail article provides lots of details: EXCLUSIVE: Alabama 'survivalist killer' Jimmy Lee Dykes wants a reporter sent into his bunker to tell his story in exchange for releasing his 5-year-old hostage | Mail Online. Clearly it has to be taken with a grain of salt, but some of it seems probable. Among other things, it says that Hostage negotiators are now communicating with Dykes via a ‘throw phone.' and that the door is believed to be booby traped.

The phone would seem to indicate that the pipe is not filtered.

It is day 5 of the holding of the young 5 yr old boy.
Perhaps the police have developed some kind of rapport with the murderer. They can hear the kid crying for his parents and that is a good sign he is still alive.
Am hoping they can gain his trust and coax him to come out with the boy.

So this is a prime example of someone with a gun who shouldn't had one. How do we honestly say who fits that classification. He was reported to patrol his property at night with a flashlight and rifle walking from corner to corner.
Someone that paranoia suggest instability.

Heard a news report that said the shooter was a survivalist and anti-government. Now there is a surprise!

Sheriff thanks suspect for taking care of boy - Yahoo! News

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) — Authorities said Saturday that they still have an open line of communication with an Alabama man accused of abducting a 5-year-old boy and holding him hostage in a bunker, and they thanked the suspect for taking care of the child as the standoff marked its fifth day.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said in a briefing with reporters that Jimmy Lee Dykes has told them he has blankets and an electric heater in the bunker. Olson said Dykes has allowed authorities to deliver coloring books, medication and toys for the boy.

"I want to thank him for taking care of our boy," Olson said. "That's very important."

Odd comments to be making by the Sheriff - I trust that there is some underlying logic here - anything....
