Deadly Alabama school bus shooting leads to standoff with suspect, 6-year-old

Odd comments to be making by the Sheriff - I trust that there is some underlying logic here - anything....

Of course he is being nice to the POS keeping a scared 5 yr old boy in a bunker. But you know damn well that Sheriff would like to knock that SOB to the ground and then grind his heel of his boot over the perp's testicles.

I think this ties into them knowing that he has a TV. It shows him gratitude and that they are not trying to slander or discredit him. He is anti-government and wants to use this to express his views. Showing his good actions and not trying to slander him makes him think he is winning and buys time.

Even if the kid comes out physically unharmed, this guy needs to be put to death. Furthermore, the parents should have the honors. If it was my son, I wouldn't hesitate on the opportunity to gut the SOB.

I don't see nothing wrong with that at all. This little 5 year old boy has entered 6 days of being scared out of his wits.

What I don't understand is that the guy has to sleep sometime in those 6 days. It would make sense that would be the time to work on the outside of the bunker to take it. They probably are too but being very careful.

What a pathetic loser using a little 5 yr old kid to bring attention to your talk radio pity parade .

Well, it's obvious to me this crazy man wants the attention. Otherwise he would have holed himself up a long time ago. Instead, he shoots a bus driver on purpose, knowing the police will be involved, and takes a child hostage to ensure he keeps getting the attention.

I say the authorities should clear out the area. Set up a sniper in the distance. Make no commotion, do not entertain this man any further. He will eventually come out and then pull the trigger on him.

Case closed.

Law enforcement officers cannot shoot him if he comes out in peace. While it is easy to say that this case calls for an exception, that would be a terrible precedent to set. Also, he is mentally unstable and apparently hates the government. He is just as likely, if not more likely to decide that he doesn't want to be arrested and take his own life and the boy's, so negotiations have to continue.

It also reminds the suspect that the boy is a human being with people outside that care about him. It is harder to kill a human being than an object.

More information: Official: Hostage standoff ends with child safe, kidnapper dead - CNN.com
Midland City, Alabama (CNN) -- A 5-year-old child abducted from an Alabama school bus six days ago is safe and his kidnapper is dead, according to a law enforcement official.
The child appeared to be OK emerging from the ordeal Monday afternoon, the official said. Alabama state Rep. Steve Clouse told CNN that the boy was taken to a hospital in nearby Dothan.
One neighbor said he was outside when he was startled by the sound of an explosion.
"I head a big boom and then ... I believe I heard rifle shots," said Bryon Martin, who owns a home near the bunker where the boy had been held since Tuesday.
It was a loud noise that "made me jump off the ground," he said.
Two ambulances left the scene shortly before 4 p.m. (5 p.m. ET).
Last Tuesday, policae say, Jimmy Lee Dykes boarded a Dale County school bus and demanded the driver hand over two children.

Sounds like they went in.

It's nice to see that our law enforcement can be badass like the Israelis. I hope the child is relatively ok, physical aside.

I don't get how a boom makes people nearby in the neighborhood (?) jump and the boy is not affected. The boy had to be out or clear to breach with ear protection when then the thump occured?

Thank God he's ok.

I have issue with law enforcement claiming they waited to strike only when they thought the child's life was in danger becaue they thought they saw a firearm.

Ok - maybe this is just poor HORRID wording of the press. . . but the dude was known to be armed. He shot and killed the bus driver. . . the child was in danger every single second of every day.

Poor wording - I know the real issue was that they needed to be sure that once they struck they'd get him out of the way and too the child without causing further harm.

thank goodness they were able to save this child. I suspect this man may have had a mental disease that went untreated or may never have been diagnosed. More money has to be spent in finding and treating people who have mental issues and if nothing can be done for them they have to be locked up in institutions until they no longer pose a threat to themselves or others. This however has to be done with great care and oversight to make sure no-one is locked up in this kind of institution for things other than mental health issues.

One of the news stories I read said that negotiations had begun to break down and they feared he might kill the boy and himself. That's when they decided to enter the compound. Its sounds to me like they did exactly what was in the little boy's best interest as the situation unfolded. And we can hardly complain about the outcome!

I say job well done to those involved!

I agree - they tried to do it to ensure his safety during the process but I don't think things were more imminent than they already were - it was already at a level 10 from the beginning. It's disingenuous to suggest that - up until then - he was 'fine'

Regardless - his disgusting pig ass perversion of nature is ****ing dead.

I think they were in a better position to judge risk to little Ethan than were we. I will not second guess them based on what little information has been released.

No - I'm not questioning police actions, etc . . . I'm confused by the citing of a 'firearm being present' as a reason - again, I think it'd just be a poor choice of words from journalists on this issue - but we knew the guy was armed and had already proven to be a notable threat.

It's not the police stating this - it's journalism really wording this just horribly wrong. . that's what I'm commenting on. Journalism is failiing a bit, here.

Why are we pretending that this is not a right wing anti-government whack job high on ideology and right wing rhetoric?

That may be. What I read was that negotiations had begun to break down. Which would have indicated more risk to the child. That's when they decided to go in, at least according to the news story I read.

That makes perfect sense to me as far as reasoning on their part.
