Pentagon to overturn ban on women in military combat roles

men don't have hygiene issues? I'd love to see that study.

Well, they don't get yeast infections, which is the current reason why the Army won't let females in any situation where they won't have a shower for 3 days or longer. Which is simply the way it is for many of the required missions in Afghanistan.

That's not true. Men can and do get yeast infections. Men also get other health issues due to poor hygiene.

They haven't been tested under fire, so how can that be so?

I'll highlight from post 84:

JERUSALEM -- A deadly shootout last week along Israel's border with Egypt has shined a spotlight on Israel's only mixed female and male combat unit, granting some recognition to a group that has faced much skepticism and often been the butt of jokes since its inception.

The Caracal battalion's response to the militant attack on Friday – which left three gunmen dead, including one whom Israeli officials said was killed by a female soldier – marked a major test for the unit that typically handles tame operations. One Israeli soldier also was killed.

(snip)

"If the Caracal force wasn't there in those critical moments, it's clear to everyone that we could have faced a difficult attack," Col. Guy Biton, the commander of the Sagi Brigade that oversees the battalion, told the Maariv daily newspaper.

Good, now lets work on the equal right to register for the Draft. And, while we are at it, women should be dieing on the battlefield at an equal rate as men. Women pushed their way into the workforce, demanding a 50% stake, many times backed by federal laws. So where are these laws when it comes to ensuring women take on the roles of firefighters, constructions workers, pavement workers, coal miners, loggers, truck drivers, garbage men... Some of the most dangerous jobs where the highest job related deaths occur are occupied by men. WHEN WILL WOMEN SHARE THE BURDEN!!! You want equality, but only when you want to have it. But you dont want to share the responsibility men have to maintain and build our countries infastructure or on the front lines protection our interests overseas. WHERE ARE YOU LADIES!!! Is this true equality when men still account for over 90% of the workplace deaths, die 7 years younger, commit suicide 6 times as much, represent 38% of college graduates. Did you know that single women that dont have kids make 117% of single men that never have kids. Did you know that women command over 70% of spending. Did you know that Women have 150% more net worth than men on average.

Equal rights!!! Get serious. Equal rights is taking a slice of not just the good but the bad also. Taking on only the work you want to take on, and forcing employers to hire you in respect of gender equality is not equal rights, its entitlement. STEP IN LINE LADIES!!!! You have a lot to do before you are truely EQUAL to men.

Pick up that 70+LB pack, grab that gun and face the enemy like we have been doing and dieing while doing it for over 400 years. Go demand that job at the construction site, coal mine, sanitation office, logging office...ect..ect.. demand your 50% of job related deaths!!!

I agree with you. However I say give them the opportunity, if they want to be dudes they can be treated as a dude. Most wont be able to hack it...

They cant be treated as a lady if they want to do mens work. They should get no exemptions.

*shrugs* Until absolutely EVERY single standard is identical for men and women in combat positions, I will oppose it.

The point is, you're creating a difference that isn't there. Both men and women carry Candida yeast, and both men and women get such infections for exactly the same reasons. So, what I'm questioning are your standards.

They're not my standards, they're the Army standards. If you think I wrote standards, then you're drastically overestimating my former rank.

As I said, one minor firefight. NYPD and Chicago cops see more action than that.

BTW, you left this out.

After an extensive search, the female soldier who made the initial report was found hiding in a bush...

I wouldn't be concerned with female marksmanship - I would be more worried about their physical ability to keep up with the men on long hikes into the mountains and in the jungle (or wherever).

Combat is a lot more than just shooting.

I think you're caught ahold of a weak army standard designed to try and prevent women for serving. I don't believe that standard will hold up to any serious scrutiny.

That's a concern even for some men. But keeping up would be a valid standard.

A weak army standard? When we were in the field for training, all of the women got buss'ed back onto main base to take showers every 3 days. It's not a weak standard, it's an army wide standard that is enforced by every unit.

If they get rid of it, then good, it's one step closer to actually making the standards equal, because right now they're anything but equal.

PT standards are the worst of it. A woman maxing her PT test won't even pass by the male standards. It's ridiculous, and until women are ready to be equal in all aspects, I'm opposed to it.

I don't think it was in my link. Might need conformation on that one. BTW, have men even hidden?

Lord, by weak I mean the rationale it is based on and not whether they did it or not.

And do you really believe the physical requirements are that great today? I would question some of the PT standards (not all).

Oh Jesus YES! I spent 15 months carrying over a hundred god damn pounds on my back walking through the ****ing hindu kush. Afghanistan is NOT iraq. Most of the combat isn't in vehicles, it's humping and hating life.

But woman cant keep up - it's physically impossible. The simple fact they have wider hips will slow them down. Woman are not built for extreme physical activities. Of course they can do extreme physical activities but the male will always be faster and more durable.

This all reminds me of GI Jane (the movie) It was politcal then, and is politcal now. There is no WAY in hell a general sends in women into direct line of fire if they can help it, and the first one that does, and has the result that is fairly predicatble will be relieved of command. All this, sure if they can handle the physicality of it, then let them nonesense is missing the obvious political chest puffing this all is. All this is is some powerful womens lobby group (over the years) not being able to see the forest through the trees. -Or-, if you like, as long as it ain't my daughter the message is more to further womens perceived lack of equality and is worth the sacrifice of a few daughters to get the recognition. Politicians, like elitests, have never in the history of mankind, ever had a problem letting someone else take it up the you know what, just so long as the bigger picture is realized, and or furthered.

This will all be great until females start coming home in body bags at the same rate men do, then see how long this little social experiment lasts!

This "experiment" has been going on since woman were allowed to join up. Women pilots have been shot down in combat. The only difference now is that they will be elegible for the medals they deserve.

Dude, Puleeeessseee... yeah sure, one female to every 5000 men isn't exactly pulling equal duty sparky. Stop with the usual liberal, and typical exception to the rule argument. You look like a fool. Yes women have died from enemy gunfire by happenstance, NOT by design. If you want to delude yourself into some ridiculous comparison then by all means. I live in the real world sugar. :)
