2 killed as helicopter crashes into crane in central London - CNN.com

London (CNN) -- Two people were killed and two others injured Wednesday when a helicopter crashed into a crane atop a new building in central London, police said.

The chopper plunged to the ground after the impact, sending smoke and flames billowing into the sky at the height of the morning rush hour.

The condition of the two injured people is not yet known, the police said.

A CNN producer at the scene saw an enormous fireball and clouds of black smoke coming from the site of the crash in Vauxhall, south of the River Thames in central London.

Emergency workers rushed to Wandsworth Road, a busy route through Vauxhall.

London's Metropolitan Police said the the alert was raised at about 8 a.m., when many commuters would have been traveling through the area.

Many emergency vehicles were on the scene and roads in the area were cordoned off.

CNN producer James Whipps, who was in an office in the area, heard the sound of the helicopter rotors suddenly cut out.

He did not see the impact but as he looked though a window, he "suddenly saw this enormous fireball, black smoke, shoot up from the side of a building."

He said the helicopter wreckage appeared to have landed on two cars.

For whatever reason, the MSNBC newscaster reported authorities do not suspect terrorism. FWIW.

Crashing into a crane doesn't sound like terrorism.

When are they going to regulate unsafe helicopters already?!? Nobody needs a helicopter for anything, and all they do is crash around into things. We need to address this helicopter problem immediately.

I agree, we should ban helicopters so things like this won't happen. We should also ban helicopter simulator games, because that just brainwashes kids into flying helicopters into things. It's a sick society we live in.

That's silly, helicopters should be limited to two passengers and a gurney.

Why would any sane, rational person ever *need* a helicopter? Just get rid of the damn things.

No sane rational person would make such a comparison.

LOL terrorism was never ever on the thoughts on anyone over here....

London was in heavy fog and heavy cold snap.. it was near a heliport.. even trying to hint that it was terror related is beyond pathetic.

I think what the leftist oriented MSNBC newsreader was doing was to answer the unasked question of many people whenever they first hear of an aircraft crashing into a standing structure in a large city.

And, I DID hear an eyewitness spontaneously dismiss the possibility of terrorism in his on camera account.

Old habits are hard to break.

Maybe they mentioned it so that people would know that it wasn't a terrorist attack.

A pilot flew into an unlit crane in the early morning fog. There is no terrorist factor. Maybe she felt the need to reassure her audience, who see terrorists under every bed.

Personally, I'd rather not see every thread turned into the same topic please. Not everything that happens in society is actually an analogy of gun control. Even trying to make such a stretch by hijacking this thread makes all the legitamite gun control threads weaker IMO.

Yeah but was it an assault chopper?

I don't know what you're talking about, I'm just trying to legislate away an obvious problem.

No it was a typical overreaction by an American tv station. Its called paranoia.

Yeah, stupid overreacting American paranoia! Yeah!

Well how would else explain it. I was watching BBC, Sky, France 24 and Al Jazerra.. not one of them mentioned terror or suspected terror or even dismissed terror.. and yet an American TV station basically leads off with that on its first coverage?

Sorry but far far from all such incidents are terror related but it seems to be the go to explanation for American media for all acts of violence... like they are wanting it to be terror rather than an accident. That is pathetic.

Spare me.

The Met told the BBC there was no suggestion the incident was linked to terrorism.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion. Matt Harverson told Sky News he initially thought it was a terrorist attack. Police confirmed it was not a terrorist incident.

Police said there was nothing to indicate that the crash was linked to a terrorist attack on London. In 2005, 52 commuters were killed in rush hour suicide bombings.

The news agencies are being accurate and making sure that people know what did and didn't happen. It's responsible journalism and nobody should expect them to do otherwise.

The statement that it wasn't a terrorist attack was originally made by both the police and MET office.

Seeing as MSNBC has been referred to as MSDNC (Microsoft + Democratic National Committee) because they have been so positively biased in their favorable coverage of the President, Democrat politicians and liberal/leftist causes, issues, policies and celebs, it's unlikely they'd match your stereotypical profile of a broadcast network that would speak to the stereotypical "Islamophobe" who sees/suspects Muslims under the bed.

Everyone in America knows that MSNBC is THE Leftist's mouthpiece. That you don't know this makes you stand alone in a spotlight of attention.

Where are you from, son?

Well, I KNOW you're in Spain, but the same goes for you as for the poster above. Try stcking to your own geography if you are going to try to spread misinformation and/or perpetuate false stereotypes.
