White House denies Texas secession

Is there an argument (not based on federal law) against the right to self determination that would not apply to opposing the right of the American colonies to secede from Great Britain in 1776? In other words, why was it OK for the American British colonies to seek independence, but not Texas? (assuming a majority of Texans support independence)

To play devils advocate, the British Empire wasnt voluntary in the first place. The colonies were not members of the Empire, they were the Empire.

Why should we stop at the state level? If a majority in any area want to secede, why shouldn't they be able to? Why shouldn't Orange County, Florida be able to secede from the Union? How about, Los Angeles County, California? Why shouldn't we be able to define our own area that may want to secede, and not follow any existing political boundaries? How many people should have be in an area before it is has the "right" to secede? Can Wyoming secede? What do we do about the obligations which the secessionists are a party to, such as national debts? This is especially important if the seceding area is a significant portion of the population. What if Washington, Oregon and California want to secede? That would be a lot of people who suddenly would have off loaded their obligations to those left behind.

They should be able to, at the individual level. Groups dont have natural rights, individuals do. And debts incurred by the Union are owed by the Union, not the members of the union. Once a state is independent they are no longer obligated to promises the union made.

So, if everyone secedes from the union, then no one has to pay?

The Texas population is 25,674,681. Approximately 125,000 signed it, but many were not even Texas residents. I don't see what is newsworthy of the White House denying succession based on a online petition with signatures from 0.004% of the population, less if you don't count the out of state signatures. I don't think this succession movement is nearly as big as some make it out to be.

Honey BooBoo is more popular than the idea of secession

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. I'd require a visa before we let any of them into the United States, however.

Too bad you don't feel the same about illegal aliens.

You have no idea how I feel about illegal aliens. Therefore your comment is just uniformed drivel.

Why should 50.1% of the population get to abruptly decide that my land is no longer part of the United States of America?

They dont. You can choose for yourself, though it might be tough to be encircled by a new country.

And if you or any crazy texans want to leave the u.s. they are free to do so, by getting on a plane, bus, or boat and leaving the u.s.

We would be better off so go pack your bags since you hate the u.s. so much.

"It(texas) argued that given the size of Texas' economy and because the state has a balanced budget, it would be "practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union."

LMAO
what a joke

That wasn't the scenario given. They said a majority of people in a given area. They're talking about all of Texas, not just the bits of Texas owned by the people signing the petition.

I own some land in Texas. If a foreign nation decides to seize it, I expect the US military to go explain to them why their choice is unwise.

If the constitution is so old and outdated as liberals claim it is what is holding Texas except the threat of retribution?
Where did you hear that or are you just making it up?

Aside from the fact that most would rather stay in the United States, I would say that last part is a pretty good reason.

Update at 4:31 p.m.: Moments ago, an email arrived from Catherine Frazier, press secretary for Governor Rick Perry, who has this to say about the petition on the White House website:

Gov. Perry believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it. But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government. Now more than ever our country needs strong leadership from states like Texas, that are making tough decisions to live within their means, keep taxes low and provide opportunities to job creators so their citizens can provide for their families and prosper. We cannot allow Washington’s tax and spend, one-size-fits-all mindset to jeopardize our children’s future, undermine our personal liberties and drive our nation down a dangerous path to greater dependence of government.

It ain't gonna happen. Besides, the Civil War put an end to any serious notion of secession.

I was expressing my opinion. If Texas has a right to seeceed, so do parts of Texas from Texas. In my scenario if you wanted to keep your land part of the USA, thats your right. Youll have to negotiate passage to it though.

No, it was 100 years of peace that did that. People got used to peace and stability, and there wasnt really a reason to ever change it. We might just be finding new reasons now with the liberal dominance of the USA.

You and your ilk that hate the US are free to leave anytime you want to. Take a boat, train, or plane and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. You just can't take Texas with you sorry. There are still patriots there that want to be part of the U.S. and not "take their ball and go home" like some school yard brat that doesn't get their way.

Looking for a reason is not a good enough excuse.
