First Antibiotic-Resistant Gonorrhea Cases Detected in North America

Hum. Everyone knows the natural course of un-treatable gonorrhea, right? Remember? Polyarthritis, rash, fever, prostration, pelvic inflammatory disease, pus pockets busting out all over, endocarditis, meningitis, infertility, ...

Just sayin'.

Well, guess I'm skipping lunch today.

Its the trend of the future for the "bugs" get use to it.

yes, the massive amounts of antibiotics given to cattle in their food supply is a major culprit.

Let's not forget the human varieties and the massive amounts of human and bovine hormones that enter our water supplies.

A quote on this from something I read on reddit from a seemingly informed writer castigating the sensationalism of the headlines:

Although antibiotic resistance is major emerging problem, this article is very sensational and misleading. They report that the bacteria is resistant to oral cephalosporins which we haven't used as primary treatment for gonorrhea in some time in the US. First line is rocephin ( ceftriaxone) which they say eradicated the infection in all the patients with the resistant strain. They failed to mention that ceftriaxone is also a cephalosporin which still effectively treats gonorrhea.

Right now, the main path of resistance is over expression of efflux pumps. There is a solution to this, we just haven't figured out how to mass produce it with repeatable results.
"Efflux pump inhibitors" is the next big thing.

Reminds me of the Black Syphillis scare the Army used to hammer us all with in Basic.

The partisanship in the sex ed debate disgusts me and highlights exactly why it's more about a political agenda than actually educating kids.

It's not about "abstinence only education" and it's not about "educating kids about sex"....it's about promoting abstinence WHILE teaching safer sex, it's about being realistic about the emotional and physical responsibilities and impact of sex while also being realistic to the likelihood of sex occurring eventually prior to a life long monogamous relationship.

At a divorce rate of 50%, the idea of a lifelong monogamous relationship has become pretty old school. Just saying!

I don't agree with abstinence education for the most part. It's good to mention it as an option but it should not be the goal. Having a healthy sex life leads to mental wellness. The focus should be on getting to know someone first before having sex with them so that you get to find out about their sexual history, and can have open communication with them about prevention.

Implanting the idea that it should be abstinence vs. life-long monogamy, and oh yeah you'll probably have sex a few other times in between, is flawed. In the modern world a huge number of people are deciding not to deal with long-term monogamy or marriage at all, but are still able to lead healthy sex lives.

Re: gonorrhea, we need to find a more novel way of dealing with disease than using antibiotics.

Maybe this will teach people to stop pumping antibiotics into the world unnecessarily? Probably not.

Yeah antibiotic soaps and creams are big business, and that doesn't even account for the drug business. Don't bet on it. I don't take antibiotics. I would have to be near death and be getting them by IV or have a boil as big as my butt before I will take them.

When livestock are raised walking around in several feet of their own filth in overcrowded feed lots, the overuse of antibiotics is inevitable.

Yes, this is what I'm concerned about. The livestock business pumps staggering amounts of antibiotics into the environment. And to a lesser extent, I'm concerned about dumb people who insist on taking antibiotics for a cold! And the doctors that prescribe them to them

Doctors prescribing antibiotics unnecessarily is a small part of the problem compared to the industrial feed lots where thousands of cattle live in filth.

Large amounts of antibiotics are necessary in this scenario.

Maybe it's a good time for abstinence and monogamy to become fashionable again_

I believe if it ever caught on the young and old alike would be happier and healthier_

For that to happen, modern American culture would have to reign in its sense of entitlement and learn more self-control across the board. Right now people expect everything on demand: TV, food, luxuries, sex, big cars, etc. That has to change.

I don't believe in culturally forcing people to be monogamous and a return to pre-60's traditional families is not realistic, I just think now we've swung too far the other way perhaps.

I never suggested "culturally forcing people to be monogamous" and like you I don't believe in such policies nor that they would even work_

I do however believe that the best place to teach children the values of "pre-60's traditional families" is in the home through family guidance and by example_

When young men talk about young girls with vulgar disrespect and view them as nothing more than cheap easy sex objects, they will treat them as such_

When young girls condone and accept this role assigned them by society they begin talking, dressing and acting like trashy sluts and will become whores_

At age 25 and despite the fact that I was exposed to the same peer pressures and modern immoralities, I've never tolerated such disrespect nor acted like a slut_

My brothers and I were raised in an environment where morality, respect and self-respect were passed on by parental guidance and demosnstrated by example__

I am living proof that regardless of what much of modern society considers to be a "prudish" upbringing, it can and does work and I know for a fact that I'm not alone_

(ie, cool parents are bad parents)

People can be raised to embrace having healthy sex lives while still having love and respect for other people and oneself. It is prudish to equate a sexually active lifestyle with disrespect. Your post kind of conflates the two.

I hate sexism and would like to see it end. Pre-1960's social culture was filled to the brim with sexism. Modern women can fight back against sexism but back then if they did, they might be put in a mental institution for "treatment". If you really desire a revival of that era's values so much then you're on your own.

This isn't about you but about children, most of which will equate sex with love and get taken advantage of and even abused or set themselves up for a broken heart often leading to a serious meltdown which contributes to the teenage suicide rate_

Pre-1960's parents were aware that children are not equipped to handle the mental stresses and emotions of a sexual relationship and particularly the multiple relationships which are so popular today especially when the pics get texted all over school and internet_

Apparently you haven't heard about such things as sexting or hooking up or sex parties or contests involving sex dares and exploits, all of which are very common among today's children as young as 13 years old and sometimes even pre-puberty_

As an adult, no one cares who what or how many men, women or farm animals you sleep with but taking into account what you posted I do hope you're not a parent because it's obvious that you're clueless about the mess so many children are in today_

Abstinence only sex ed is equivalent to a driver ed class that just tells you not to drive. Ridiculous.

The truth is most people are not monogamous and they don't have just one partner for a lifetime, and they never have and never will. DNA and other types of research has proven that people have never been truly monogamous.

I'm not going to argue with you anymore because I don't think you fully read and understood my original arguments, and the second reason is that you are starting to insult me directly which is uncalled for.

Have a nice night.

Great post! Yes, corn is another big problem all on itself. I laughed the other day when the supermarket I was shopping at thought it would be beneficial to 'brag' about their 'corn fed' cows. Good Lord... are people not even aware that cows are not naturally equipped to properly digest it? Of course this brings us to another problem... the methane coming out of their corn-fed anuses.

Hmmmm....

Thinking the same thing about Congress...

We could harness all of their methane and probably heat most of DC for quite a while.....

'Course, we could also replace all of them with cows and have substantially improve government from 535 bovines!
