And whether anyone anti-SSM likes it or not, there are gays in the military and they have spouses. Do you think it's in the best interest of unit cohesion to exclude those spouses from clubs on the base? I don't

If it wasn't a problem back then, why is it a problem now? Do these clubs, operating on non-private territory need to be so offended or afraid of the presence of homosexuals that they have to scream "oppression"? Seems to me some of you folks are overreacting to the federal government enforcing its policies.

That is your opinion. I happen to think religious nuts are unhealthy, mentally and physically. However, that doesn't mean I legally can exclude you from a military club because of it.

Whether you like it or not gay marriage is here in states and is therefore allowed. That includes their spouses.

Well this was pretty much a political decision and that holds sway over unit cohesion. But yes, I think that unit cohesion is lessened by allowing them in. Really, the whole gays in the military thing is a paper dragon. From the hubbub you'd think the numbers we're talking about are significant. The reality is there are probably more hare krishnas serving than gay folks.

I don't quite get it. If cohesion is removed through being allowed in, but there's an incredibly small number of them in the military, where is the fire? Furthermore, have we really demonstrated that there was a big fire? Are we led to believe that the DOD's investigations were seriously flawed?

Bull****.

Not one is saying that a group can't form a Spouses Club as a private entity and exclude anyone they want. As a private club they can do that.

However if they want Command Sponsorship and access to the base then they have to be open to all dependent spouses. It's not shoving associating with homosexuality or associating with blacks or associating with Jews or associating with the disabled or associating with males/females down anyone's throat. If you don't want to associate, don't join the club. If you want to restrict membership, start your own club.

Incredible mental gymnastics on your part. How you take ending state sponsored discrimination as fascist, authoritarian, totalitarian is beyond comprehension. Nobody is "forcing" anything other than equal access to state facilities. How you make equal evil is a Jedi mind trick.

The big fire wasn't in the military in the first place, but in the political arena. And politics rules the military command structure. To the point where political considerations win out over unit cohesion concerns. A good Commander In Chief does his best to shield the military from that as much as possible.

The DOD is a political, not a military animal.

That was why I asked if there was serious evidence that reports from, say, RAND or the DOD were actually very flawed.

Would I have a problem with a black only club or a pantywaist only club ? Probably not as long as they aren't political.

Here's how it use to be.

Just up aways from Marble Mountain was China Beach, There was the China Beach Surf Club. 100 % white. Why ? Because there were only white surfers in-country.

But when you weren't out in the bush and not filling snad bags or burning ####, it was usally three cliques, each having their own hooch. The stoners, not actually getting stoned but in line with the music they were into, rock n' roll. The boozers, those drinking beer and listening to country music. And the brothers, smokn the weed and listening to Motown.

I notice today because of political correctness and diversity forced upon the military the number of cliques with in the military has grown. Those who have served know the saying of "Hurry up and wait." It was true fifty or forty years ago as it is today. When I'm aboard Camp Pendleton and it's hurry up and wait I see all of the Marines segregated into their little cliques. The white clique, Latino clique, black clique, Asian clique, female Marine clique, the grunt clique, the pog clique. And I expect the gay clique will soon be the new clique.

While that is true, I think it worthwhile to actually step it up a notch and allow it to be called authoritarian and defend it on those terms if he likes.
