Tsunami Warning after 7.5 Quake Strikes off Alaska.....

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - A tsunami warning was issued for coastal areas of southeast Alaska and British Columbia after an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude struck in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday.


The quake occurred about 60 miles southwest of Port Alexander, southern Alaska, at a depth of about 6 miles at 0858 GMT, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, which downgraded the magnitude from an initial 7.7.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, put out a tsunami warning for areas stretching from northern Vancouver Island in Canada to Cape Suckling, 75 miles southeast of the Prince William Sound town of Cordova, Alaska.

Waves were expected to hit first in Langara, in Canada's British Columbia province, and later in the morning farther north and west, possibly reaching as far as Homer on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, the center said.

The tsunami warning was likely to be in effect for at least four hours, earthquake center scientist Bill Knight said. So far there had been no reports of damage from the earthquake.

Officials in Sitka, southern Alaska, were urging evacuations in low-lying areas, local radio station KCAW reported.....snip~

Turned out to be a false alarm as no tsunami was produced.

‎My wife at 12 AM this morning: "What are you doing?"
Me: "Do you feel that?"
Wife: "Stop shaking the bed."
Me: "How could I be shaking the bed like that?"
Wife: "What are you doing?"
Me: "I think it's an Earthquake."
Wife: "Don't.... that's scary...." (falls back asleep instantly)

Good thing. Tsunamis are bad enough, but frigid arctic tsunamis must be nightmarish.

Well at least You are okay. I didn't know if we had any members up there or not. Also it seems the quakes are getting stronger. Even though it is hundreds of miles away from Yellowstone. Anything popping off even close enough to affect what is sitting there. Should always be a concern for the country.

Yes, we didn't become super alarmed because we're buried enough in the Southeast archipelago that a tsunami would hit many barriers and disperse before it'd get to us where we are, and if there was still a swell that made it here, we're enough feet up the hill from the oceanfront that I doubt it'd be big enough. Could be wrong I guess, but I don't think so.
