Tom DeLay Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison

Are you for the draft then and conscripts? That should bring our military costs in line with most other nations.

If it's a universal draft, no exceptions, everyone serves, then stays in a reserve kind of like they do in Israel and in Switzerland, it might be a good thing.

And if we'd go back to the Constitution and not get involved in undeclared wars, it just might work.

Al Capone was convicted of tax evasion. That is what they could prove. The same principle applies to Tom Delay. He was guilty of a litany of crimes too.
I guess innocent until proven guilty means little to you!
Delay was very Machiavellian in his duties, and not a nice guy,
but for the Democrats to use the legal system improperly is also wrong.

Awesome. Write your congress critter and demand it.

Are you calling the One a liar? How can we be fighting a war when the One says it is over?

You're the fellow calling Obama "The One," and not me. he's no different than any other politician. He was merely the better option.

Now, read the word "fought." It is different than fighting.

No, Guilty still means guilty, I was commenting on the statement
"He was guilty of a litany of crimes too"
.
He is only guilty of the crimes he has been found guilty of,
(moving corporate donated money to local political races)
His methodology of moving the money(by check) was not illegal in 2002, when the activity occurred,
It was made illegal in 2005.

Ok, I can agree there. My apologies for jumping the gun on you there. There are some that still don't believe Delay is guilty (of the crimes he was sentenced for).

Well now, hold on a minute....If the thing he was convicted of was legal at the point in time that it occurred, but then years later charges brought, and conviction rendered on something that wasn't illegal at the time it happened, then something is terribly wrong here.

And this is the basis of his appeal, I think he stands a good chance, as long as the appeal does not happen in Travis county.

That's called ex post facto, and it is unconstitutional. If that is indeed what happened to Delay, then his lawyers should have no trouble getting the conviction overturned.

ex post facto adj. Latin for "after the fact," which refers to laws adopted after an act is committed making it illegal although it was legal when done, or increases the penalty for a crime after it is committed. Such laws are specifically prohibited by the U. S. Constitution, Article I, Section 9.

As it is, it is questionable whether or not that is what happened. It is likely closer to say that it became clearer in the text in later law that what he was doing was illegal but that is not by itself ex post facto. Dancing on the edge of legality, well over the morality line, is a dangerous business. So it is not a slam dunk but he may still get away with it.

I see. You so easily slip from present to past and past to present. Today's policy decision says we can fight one war. Maybe.

I don't believe that's true at all.
Well, I tend to hear the murmers of policy changes well before the rest of the public does. The military is being reduced in size. You are a fair guy. You can look at the proposed force structures and see for yourself that we will not have the ability to fight in two theaters. I leave that as an exercise for you to perform at your leisure.

You are quite right. The military must be reduced. We can no longer spend more than the top 13 nations combined. We simply can't afford it.
I look forward to the time when we are fighting in ZERO theaters. So should we all.

One can never tell about charts like this. I am automatically suspisious when I see that Ezra Klein, that super patriot, has his fingerprints on it.

We do not have a draft. Are you proposing that we return to a draft? That would dramatically reduce our costs.

I think a draft that includes all of Congress's eligible chidren or grandchildren would be a fine idea. But only if they vote for another war.

I served my twenty years. So it works for me if it works for you.

We have the ability to change on a dime. And frankly,. Silliness like the last two wars need to be avoided. But if something happened and we really needed to, we'd be up and running in more than enough time.

We should never again go to war without a draft and a declaration of war from Congress. As it is, the nation is not really at war. Only the military is at war. The rest of us are sitting back and either watching, or simply ignoring, what is going on, while soldiers are sent back for tour after tour of combat duty. It's unfair.

When the president declared unconstitutional war in the '60s, the nation was at war due to the draft. That war was real to the people who faced the draft themselves, or whose sons faced the draft. The next unconstitutional undeclared war, there was no draft and the entire burden of it fell on the soldiers. The result? No real protests, no real involvement by most of us.

When we go to war, the whole country should be at war, like we were in WWII, or we shouldn't go to war. It's really that simple.

I agree! It was very sad today to hear that only 3% of Americans consider the war in Afghanistan to be an important issue to them.

We can agree to disagree.

The scary thing is, the government is going to claim we are continually "at war" with terrorists, and thus can do damn near anything they want against "enemy combatants." They are using drones to kill American citizens without at least obtaining a warrant first!
