Bush spokesman says ex-president's fever rising

Please, let's not bury him yet.

By RAMIT PLUSHNICK-MASTI Associated PressHOUSTON (AP) -- A spokesman says the fever that kept former President George H.W. Bush in a Houston hospital over Christmas has worsened, and doctors have put him on a liquids-only diet.

Jim McGrath had said earlier Wednesday that the fever had gone away. He later corrected himself and said the fever "elevated" in recent days.

He's a good man. I'll keep him in my prayers.

I disagree with him a lot, but I agree he is a good man. Glad to have met him in person - the only pres. I did meet.

Not a fan of his politics or his son dubya. But I always thought he was a decent man.

l cant exactly recall father bush but hope he gets well

I remember when Bush resigned his lifelong membership with the NRA over a matter of principal. The then VP of the NRA called the ATF "jackbooted thugs" and compared them to nazi's. Bush stood up for those people and stood on principal. I did not agree with the man much on politics but I am proud to say he was my commander in chief, proud to say I served in the same branch of service as him. He is a good man and I hope he recovers and continues to live a long life.

Yes, I join your thoughts on that. The man showed a great deal of courage in resigning his NRA membership and his calling out of of La Pierre over the right wing loved cliche "jack booted thugs" was wonderful. He always conducted himself with dignity and honor.

I admired his parachuting from planes at his advanced age. Good for him. Lets hope he can do it again.

It is hard to make out how ill he is because they will only give limited info to the public and that info is mangled up by the media.

At his advance age pneumonia can be particularly detrimental. But one also has to look at 94 yr old Mandela of South Africa who was just released from the hospital after a lung infection.

Bush Sr. got a lot of flak for how he handled the War in Iraq and reducing the deficit. Hindsight proved him right. I wish that current crop of politicians would try and remember his example that the president does policy first, political whoring second.

Re: George H W Bush in ICU in Houston

Actually I think post Presidency the Bush Sr. administration is looked on favorably by history. I think he's an American hero for his service and making hard decisions to this country on the right track. The surplus during Clinton owes a lot to former President Bush.

Overall, my guess is that historians will judge him as a generally effective President. He managed the closing years of the Cold War and unification of Germany very well, making a contribution that helped ensure a peaceful end of the Cold War during which there were many challenges that could have led to a more disruptive conclusion. He managed the Iraq war as well as it could have been done from the strategic angle (limited goal of Kuwait's liberation and successful attainment of that goal). Domestically, he displayed courage in taking on the nation's fiscal deficits. He understood that ideology and political promises sometimes must be subordinated to on-the-ground realities when it comes to solving problems. He made his errors, too, one of which I believe was initiating the U.S. role in Somalia (no major interests were involved).

His broad experience in foreign policy, national security, and as Vice President, gave him the kind of depth that has been lacking in many recent Presidential candidates.

I wish him a speedy recovery.

I agree. Putting aside differences in ideology, hindsight increasingly shows that the Reagan-Bush-Clinton period was one in which the nation had highly capable leaders who were willing and able to take on the big challenges that confronted them, even if it required tough decisions or compromise. All three men got things done. That is no small accomplishment. The nation could have done far worse.
