NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - In the wake of the Newtown massacre, the NYPD is examining ways to search the internet for potential “deranged” gunmen.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that their searches would be similar to those being used to spot terrorist chatter online.

“And what we’re talking about is publicly available websites, chatrooms, that sort of thing,” Kelly said, adding that algorithms could be used. That will enable us to use, perhaps, commonly used terms that are used by people engaged in this sort of activity,” he said

“The techniques would include cyber-searches of language that mass-casualty shooters have used in e-mails and Internet postings,” Kelly said.

“So, we think this is another logical step,” Kelly said.

And who would have guessed that the 'knee jerk' parade would start in the city that has big gulp's banned? Good grief, some in here better watch what they type should this become an accepted national strategy to combat the latest boogeyman...

As the song says....

"And while the rest of the nation is still sleepin'They'll be bidding America goodbye..."

Hmph. This kinda worries me.... "Future Crimes Division"... one wonders what standard they will use for assuming someone is a likely suspect, and what they will do to them.

Well first they used it for pedophiles, then terrorists and now for finding deranged gunmen. I just love punishing language. It's so much fun.

How much of that staff could be assigned to solving present and past crimes, those that already have victims?

As with much of this sort of thing, it may be less about actually protecting people, and more about increasing the size of government, and controlling people.
