Condoms for free at 22 city schools

Does anyone seriously think that just providing condoms is going to do much, if anything, to solve the problem of teen STD's? If, as another poster alluded, kids are reacting to their impulses, what makes anyone think that, in an impulsive moment, any kid is going to stop and find and use a condom? That requires planning and consideration of future consequences, which is the polar opposite of acting on impulses. And what boy is going to voluntarily strap a numbing device on his penis anyway?

Education about consequences of sex and parent involvement in helping shepherd kids through their impulsive years is what is needed here. Condoms should be the LAST item considered in a long line of STD and pregnancy prevention steps.

I don't think anyone is looking for 'solve'. ANY reduction of the problems inherent to unprotected sex is worth the investment.

I thought that condoms are issued from parents themselves as this true story points out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldFq82DeiYo

But I mean what is the deal with girls parents issuing an entire box full of condoms? "I know what goes on after the prom so take this box and bang my daughter the whole night until either you are bone dry or there are no more condoms left!"

Plus one condom box seemed to be one of those multiple purpose condoms. What's the message behind that? The mother "Here's a multiple purpose box full of various condoms. Don't leave a hole unusued now!"

It just isnt fair I tell ya...we had to pay a quarter in some sleezy bathroom for our condoms when I was a teen and for a quarter I could go to the movies on saturday.

Coming over the holiday break to about a third of Philadelphia high schools: clear plastic dispensers chock-full of free condoms.

The dispensers will be placed in the 22 high schools whose students had the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases, and condoms will be available to any student - so long as their parents did not sign a form opting them out of the program.

The dispensers would be a new thing, but the local schools around where I live in Texas have had free condoms from the school nurse for years.

Condoms...good lord I cant believe people resist providing free access. look...people that believe they are responsible enough to have sex SHOULD be responsible enough to afford a few bucks for a box of condoms. Women deciding to knock boots with someone SHOULD probably be a little more discerning in their selection of men when it comes to being able to do something so basic and simple as providing and wearing a condom. But...since responsibility isn't exactly a word people are fond of...then splurging and handing out free condoms in the hope that there will be at least a few unwanted pregnancies (and a few less abortions) is nothing but a 'good' thing.

I've always maintained that I'd much rather pay for other people's condoms than their welfare, or medical expenses.

As a libertarian leaning individual, I'd rather not pay for either, but if I have to, I'd rather pay for the condoms.

Do we also pass a law that if they dont use the free condums we jail them ?

Tax dollars shouldn't be used so guys can get their peckers wet.

Govt condoms are probably lowest bidder.

I agree, but the purpose is supposedly to stop the spread of SSTs...not sure if im for this or against it...not sure if it works vs the cost

If parents in these areas took a more active role in raising their children they would have better examples to follow and would be less likely engage in such risky behavior.

The proof of the truth of my statement is that the kids have to have signed notes to opt out of the program...not opt in.

Sorry, I just can't agree. Parents in those areas are not likely to have any worthwhile input to offer in their children's lives. Many are even in prison. I've worked in those areas and in prisons, and I know that many of the parents have copped out on all responsiblity even to their own children. All they care about is getting high and getting laid themselves. They are of no benefit whatsoever to their children.

In my day people used to grouse because the health department checked our teeth and gave free immunizations in schools. Times have changed. I may be old, but I'm not stupid. Pontificating about the role of 'the parents' when the parents are nothing but worthless drugged out pieces of dog feces is counter productive. Give 'em the condums. It costs little enough. Just because and adult 'should' do something doesn't mean he/she WILL do something.

As a business decision it is idiotic to purchase a product not related to learning and get no money for it, as a teaching decision it is idiotic to promote an act that we know is irresponsible. I wonder what the chances are of a 15 yr old kid properly using a condom in the heat of the moment anyway? Maybe we should provide a room at each school where kids can have sex and have a teacher there to make sure everything is done right.

Ad homs...why?

I was topical. If you really think "old timer" is an ad hom, well, lighten up, Francis.

Who mentioned anything about abstinence only?

What was this?

That's negation.

That's A.

Negation + A = AO

Ahh conjugal educational visits....or conjugal school visits

It's almost the year 2013. Sorry, abstinence does NOT work. I think schools should teach about abstinence in sex ed class as well as birth control.

Unfortunately, not all parents will teach their children about condoms or abstinence. There are PLENTY of parents out there that won't talk about sex at all to their kids.

I'm sure the costs of these condoms are relatively cheap and they will NOT harm the children. If only some of the teens actually utilize them and prevent themselves from getting pregnant or from getting an STD, then it is totally worth it.

We have a teen pregnancy and STD EPIDEMIC in this country. All of you self-righteous asses take note.

Sexual Risk Behavior: HIV, STD, & Teen Pregnancy Prevention

Many young people engage in sexual risk behaviors that can result in unintended health outcomes. For example, among U.S. high school students surveyed in 2011:

47.4% had ever had sexual intercourse
33.7% had had sexual intercourse during the previous 3 months, and, of these
39.8% did not use a condom the last time they had sex
76.7% did not use birth control pills or Depo-Provera to prevent pregnancy the last time they had sex
15.3% had had sex with four or more people during their life

Sexual risk behaviors place adolescents at risk for HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and unintended pregnancy:

An estimated 8,300 young people aged 13–24 years in the 40 states reporting to CDC had HIV infection in 2009
Nearly half of the 19 million new STDs each year are among young people aged 15–24 years
More than 400,000 teen girls aged 15–19 years gave birth in 2009

To reduce sexual risk behaviors and related health problems among youth, schools and other youth-serving organizations can help young people adopt lifelong attitudes and behaviors that support their health and well-being—including behaviors that reduce their risk for HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy.

Like anyone else when they need something they need to pay for it themselves or they need to find someone willing to do it for them. Condoms are cheap as hell so they have no good excuse to be irresponsible. I don't see any good reason schools have provide condoms or really anything else other than schooling.

Well unfortunately and OBVIOUSLY they do.

Well obviously as people demand other people to cover their asses more the government will respond by covering your ass more. Surprising? No, not really.

Why in the world are the kids of today excused from the responsibility of abstinence to prevent the risk of pissing away their future? This statement just supports my view that personal responsibility is continuously on the decline in this country. We overgeneralize the statement that it's okay to make mistakes by supporting this kind of crap. Teach the kids about how they'll most likely make their future painfully challenging if they get a disease or have a kid too early. If they wait until they graduate and prepare for work to secure their future, they have how many years left to screw?

The point is that teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are BIG problems, and a lot of parents do NOT talk to their kids about it.

What is more destructive and costly? Condoms or unwanted pregnancies and diseases?

The kids of today are not doing anything that kids didn't always do. It was just hidden and brushed under the carpet so many years ago when they would send pregnant teens to special homes so that the community wouldn't know.

I am so happy I don't have kids. I don't have to worry about this stuff, but I still think raising a baby as a teen makes it more difficult to go to college and have a higher quality of life. I am for doing everything to prevent teen pregnancy. If free condoms cuts the rate, I see nothing wrong with it. Condoms should probably used by more adults as well. Bars and pubs probably need dispensers too.

Then instead of telling me to buy these kids' condoms, you should criticize the parents and tell them to get their crap together when it comes to parenting. Continuing my point about the lack of responsibility, you are excusing and/or ignoring the irresponsibility of parents.
