North Korea has confirmed that it had arrested a US citizen in November, saying he had admitted to unspecified charges and suggesting he would be formally prosecuted.
The man, identified as Pae Jun-Ho, entered North Korea on November 3 as a tourist, and "committed a crime" against the country, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Friday.

"In the process of investigation, evidence proving that he committed a crime against the DPRK was revealed. He admitted his crime," the agency said in a short despatch.

"Legal actions are being taken against Pae in line with the criminal procedure law", it added, without elaborating.

Looks like the hermit kingdom has arrested another US citizen. Hopefully nothign terrible happens, but when it comes to the DPRK you never know.

Sorry, any U.S. citizen traveling in North Korea is a bloomin' idiot.

I plan on traveling to North Korea sometime
I think it would be risky (yes), but interesting.

any U.S. citizen traveling in North Korea is a spy

There is so much to steal.

Dude, didn't you hear about the unicorn cave? Do you want them to get an edge in the field of mythical creatures?

They put you on a tour and force you to watch their propaganda. It's like Disney World, but it sucks. They don't let you wander around, at all. You don't speak to anyone who is not trained, from nearly birth, to do so.

Obviously, the guy in the OP article thought he could do otherwise - wrong.

DPRK is such a backward, clown show of a country, it is almost hard for me NOT to want to travel there, so I can experience firsthand the idiocy, fake patriotism, and delusions of the government believing they've trick me into believing they are a benevolent country.

Just the novelty of traveling to the most backward country with the biggest personality cult the world has ever seen is irresistible.

Whatever this man did, he probably deserved to be arrested, as the NK gov is usually trying to gain favour with foreigners, as opposed to arresting them. Unless of of course he is a naturalised South Korean, which his name possibly suggests.

Ok, but why not travel to america in that case? We have the same thing. Now that your dollar is worth as much as an american dollar you can enjoy our countries great scams. I know NK is a great show where the magic is protected by the penalty of death, but we have have christian based theme parks where you can watch history unfold as it was written in the bible. DC has got to be better than NK on the level of attempting to trick you into believing they are benevolent. Visit during spring when they piss away millions on flowers while the stench of bums drifts down from baltimore and infests the city. Oh, and we have Texas and Arizona. If you want bat**** crazy there is no more crazy a place than texas. If you wan totalitarian rule from crazy people with delusions of grandeur we have Joe Arpio of arizona. All the crazy of the original glorious ruler, and a lot less money.

Just the novelty of traveling to the most backward country with the biggest personality cult the world has ever seen is irresistible. Who can beat Fox news for fake patriotism? Truly faked patriotism is not forced, it comes from gallons of 24 hour Kool aid. We have religious crazies by the truckload. We have jobless hipster kids who like to pretend they are saving the world by sitting around in parks and screwing around on their iphones. Hell, we have crazy men who dress up in pastel pony costumes and jerk off to popular furry art. Where else in the world can you get a crazy bunch of middle age men who fuinally have the courage to play with the toys that they couldn't bring themselves to buy in their youth? We have crazy in so many varieties there is no place in the world that can compete with our crazy. If you find crazy for less, shoot it dead because it might breed. Oh, and we let crazies have assault rifles.

I don't know what you are thinking with North Korea. Even if you get done with American crazy, there is still japan before you get to NK. Just look up Yatta and remember yoyu cannot unsee that sort of thing. There is a reason i never looked twice at some silly south korean guy doing a stupid dance. This is because I have been initiated to japanese crazy and gangman style is nothing to gundam insanity.

Will the same GOP reps be writing a letter for this fellow, demanding his release?

I know he's not as all-American as the marine who carried a shotgun into to Mexico, but you'd think they'd be making some noise.

there are very few things that make me nostalgic for the days when humans on one side of the world had no idea what humans on the other side of the world were doing. the DPRK, however, falls into this category for me.

Clearly this illustrates the difference between a US Citizen and an American. This guy's US citizenship should be revoked as should anyone else who uses their citizenship for political gain.

Why the confusion.

You cant get into North Korea. Occasionally they allow journalists into the DPNK, however there is no tourism - and even the journalists allowed in are guarded at all times and can only investigate or even talk to DPNK citizens when allowed to.

In January 2010 the DPRK lifted its restriction on not allowing Americans visit the DPRK.

There are still restrictions, the same restrictions that have been in place since the Korean War ended.

You would have a better shot at winning the lotto than you would getting into North Korea legally.

Sure I would love to see a true authoritarian state, and personality cult myself, however only for educational purposes -- NOT to marvel at their sinister cult....

I agree. I went to China in 2002 with a group that was well approved by both the US and China. The one thing I missed getting a pic of was a very large placard by the sidewalk which had multiple, multiple of those circles with a slash through it and a picture behind each one. It is even illegal to spit on the sidewalk there. Of course when you think that there are 13 million people in such a small area, it would be a major health hazard you could understand it. But our bus driver almost hit a car and then almost had apoplexy. I have posted somewhere, maybe not on this forum, that the Chinese only think in terms of crime and punishment. I felt VERY safe while I was there. But I would not have wanted to get accused of a crime. If you are going to places like that don't go alone.
