Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama on Friday will nominate Sen. John Kerry, the former presidential candidate who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to be the next secretary of state, a senior administration official told CNN.

could have done worse. i'm not thrilled about Clinton stepping down, but Kerry now has a chance to rise to the occasion like she did.

as a side benefit, his nomination should sail through, so at least we won't endure weeks of hyperpartisan posturing in the senate.

Best of luck to Kerry.

I do not envy him.

neither do i. like the Presidency, i wouldn't seek it. my dream job is probably the House of Representatives. once there, i'd stay until voted out.

You... want to be in politics?

My grandfather told me something very important. He said: "As long as you live, don't get into politics".

I have turned down 3 invitations to join political parties thus far, and will continue to do so.

yeah, i'd love it. however, i doubt that i'd last too many terms. many of my ideas would probably just piss people off right before going nowhere. the only consolation / vindication would be, "look what this guy said we needed to concentrate on 50 years ago."

perhaps i'd be better off starting locally.

I don't know about that. I'm expecting a:

Swift-boat II
This time it's personal

There may be some of that, but I don't expect to see much of the swiftboat in this. The senate repects Kerry.

No need to go back to the Hanoi Hall of Fame days. Let's just look at his committee attendance records for the past ten years.

Do you know how Mass would handle filling his seat off-hand? Governor appointment or special election?

Didn't John Kerry serve in Vietnam?

Not sure, maybe Scott Brown will get another bite at the apple. Wouldn't that be a hoot.

The Repugs got their old white man after all. Hope they're happy now!

I believe it's both. The governor makes a "caretaker" apointment who holds the seat until a special election is held. This is what they did for Ted Kennedy's seat when he passed.

Yeah, really. He got some of that passed down by Teddy, but the rest, again, he's wealthy, urbane, educated and he's been there a long time.

lol. if that happens, I'm not watching the news until it's over. every time I think politics can't reach new depths... ;)

I think he'll be a good man for the job.
Maybe sense he spoke out against unjustifiable, illegitimate war in Vietnam maybe he'll do the same with Afghanistan and maybe future endeavors abroad.

yes, the ignorant bastard learned soooo much from his vietnam experience:
Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry said Monday he would not have changed his vote to authorize the war against Iraq ...
Kerry stands by 'yes' vote on Iraq war - CNN

that is not the guy we need at the state department

Never been a fan of Kerry. Just comes across as the stereotypical stuffed shirt politician. No idea what kind of SoS he will make.

(But for the sake of full disclosure: The White House never called and asked my opinion....)

What is your age, gender and race, any idea?

Nice edit... but I saw it.

So, is that what black people like Obama do when the going get's tough, they turn to white people like Kerry and Hagel?

That's what you said right? Maybe my sarcasm meter is broken though. Thought I'd give you a chance to clarify.
