Crist testifies in Senate that there was voter suppression in... | www.palmbeachpost.com

WASHINGTON —

In a nation with a growing number of laws restricting voting practices, Florida stood as exhibit A in a hearing Wednesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Former Gov. Charlie Crist and Sen. Bill Nelson described a voting obstacle course: seven-hour lines at the polls, being turned away for showing up at the wrong precinct and a new law that made it harder to register someone to vote.

The changes, Crist said, created “confusion and suppression on Election Day.”

In a surprise visit to the hearing, Nelson offered what he said was proof that changes in Florida law were designed to affect the outcome of the election.

Nelson introduced into evidence a deposition unearthed by The Palm Beach Post. It showed that the Republican attorney who engineered the 2000 Florida felons list, which African American leaders said purged thousands of eligible blacks from voter rolls, drafted Florida’s controversial law that restricted early voting and voter registration campaigns in 2012. Nelson also included into the Congressional record a story by The Palm Beach Post on so-called voter suppression efforts.

If I had my way, the legislatures and other government officials who did this would be in jail for a long time. I hate how petty our party politics has become.

I read this. But for some reason all I can remember is the thought "nasty Santa".

In fairness, Crist, who moved from the GOP to Independent, and now to Dem, is laying the groundwork to challenge Rick Scott in 2 years.

I smell grandstanding.....

Except that there is not really any groundwork needed to challenge Rick Scott, one just needs to be on the ballot and most Floridians will consider you a better candidate. Gov. Scott is quite unpopular around here.

You gotta give Governor Scott credit for putting the drug testing plan in place.

You mean the one where his lab benefited from the money it produced until the State legislature made him stop doing it?

Yeah, a real stand up guy.

He could have at least made some attempt to have been fair about it and included alcohol testing. A bunch of hay over a relatively inconsequential problem while not addressing more serious related issues.

And as has already been pointed out - he did not do a good job of separating the whole conflict of interest issue with his (former) holdings - at first he signed them over to his wife, and well AFTER he took a serious beating on the issue he took steps to further distance himself. A case of closing the barn doors after the horses were out.

But we are on a tangent here, that is not directly related to the thread topic.

He has been running for government long before testifying and actually was the governor of the state in the past so your accusation is without aany merrit and is complete partisan BS.

that was just terrible. It was a horrible ad hom that had absolutely nothing to do with the argument over voting restrictions. That was sinking very very low on the piss poor argument scale. he could be running for queen of england and it doesn't change the facts in the case.

Considering that said drug testing plan was to be done by the company that he owned shares in, which he then gave to his wife, no, you don't.

Personally, I'd rather we start drug testing our politicians rather than our welfare recipients.

"In fairness, let me completely ignore what the man was saying."

The same plan that cost more money than it saved from kicking people off the rolls, yes. That plan.

Wow, no kidding!
My brother lives in FL and I get an earful from him a couple of times a week about Scott.
Scott has made few friends since getting in, and has not done anywhere near what he promised for job creation.
I seem to recall that his chief of staff resigned several months ago for backdoor deals with political friends on some contracts, I think.

How's about both? sounds fair to me.

Hardly anyone ends up testing positive. The tests cost more than you save. So why bother?

Dude was a massive crook before he got elected. I was absolutely shocked he was even got on the ballot much less won.

Florida voters gave gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott the nod of approval in the November 2, 2010 elections. However, Scott who beat Alex Sink in the Florida Governor’s race, admitted to 14 counts of Medicare fraud and paid the federal government more than $600 million dollars in fines for his fraudulent billing practices.

Oh yea, I have heard that earful from my brother on numerous occasions.

Scott seems to have been a complete failure on every campaign front that he had.

I guess that he spent some of his own fortune when running, and basically bought the election.

Brother really hates his guts, and he is generally reserved about everything else (except Scott).

You know, he really is a great guy. He sure gets fired up about Scott, though.

He does a lot of fishing, so he is also very in tune environmentally, which I respect.

The Florida ecosystem is very important to tourism, lifestyle, and for food.

Fresh water or sea water fishing?

Wait! Christ is back??? Well, **** me, maybe the world IS ending tomorrow!

The only proper way in Florida, of course - seawater!

I have a good friend that moved to florida and that is all he does. He's now living in the bahamas. I grew up just a couple miles north of florida in georgia and it was all swamps and pond fishing.
