Firearm Found Inside Mpls. School Staff Member’s Locker

Either gun owners hang onto the narrative that they are law abiding citizens, that no one needs to fear for them being armed, or they can support actions like this. You can't have it both ways were you talk about stopping criminals, while you are currently breaking the law. Now I get it that her crime is far far from a murder or a shooting, but it is still illegal what she did.

No, the fact is most gun owners ARE law abiding citizens. This one apparently was not. She did the right thing by informing the staff, she did the wrong thing by bringing in the gun. Pretty sure that besides being against school policy, it was probably against the law as well. AND it was foolish (the weapon was loaded and ready to fire).

She should have lobbied for a change to the law/policy first, before she came armed.

It is amusing to hear a 'conservative' accuse a Progressive of fearing change!

I'd LOVE to see the 'conservatives' quit brow beating the Teacher's Union and work together for viable security upgrades. Many options are available, but few are cheap. I wouldn't have a problem with teachers VOLUNTARILY seeking a rather high standard of training to carry in the classroom, CCW training just isn't extensive enough for the classroom environment in my opinion. That of course would be a hit and miss, hodge podge of 'security'.

Someone once said the road to Hell was paved with good intentions. As a firearm owner and former grunt I can tell you your weapon can't be left, outside the home, out of what we called physical security- your reach. She would have gotten an Article 15 for that at the very least if it was the Army of my day. Bad juju anyway you slice it.

I have to wonder if this employee did infact tell the teacher about the weapon to make sure someone else would be able to get to it if it was needed and the employee went down if she knew the teacher was familiar with how a revolver works and if this teacher could hit the broad side of a barn with it. The long trigger pull of a double action revolver is why I 'cheat' and thumb the hammer back before pulling the trigger.

I also wonder just how well the employee knew this teacher if the teacher turned around and reported the employee...

Not very close and if not close why would you entrust deadly force in them?

Just seems a bit hinky to me...

Except I am only a fiscal and abortion conservative. What amuses me is the "Progressives" only consider people liberal when they agree with their autocratic bent. I am a liberal libertarian and you folks just don't know how to deal with that. Keep trying though.

Nice paste and cut - From Terrorist. Saying the issues Isreal has and we have are the same is insane. They have people within thier communities who want to kill them wholesale. We don't at least not that way.

I wasn't saying that, you did.

What I WAS pointing out, Was that there IS a way for teachers to assume an added role as guardians, in the true sense of the word. They may not need to carry a Kalashnikov, but they could concealed carry a Glock.

The way I see it, this staff member made two mistakes:

1. She violated school policy regarding guns on campus.

While I don't condone her action, I can understand the fear that made her do this.

2. She told a teacher she had a gun.

If she would have kept silent, nobody would have known the gun was there...until some 20 year old nutjob came into the school with evil intent. Then she might be considered a hero.

On the other hand, that mother who had a "little mini-breakdown" really needs to get a grip on life.

Maybe the gun toting old lady just got pranked? The day before in the teacher's lounge, some guy stands up and sez "You know what we all oughta do?? Beginning tomorrow we all start packin' heat!! If some crazy guy invades the school we will all be ready to blast the evil bastard...!!!".

And the teacher who got arrested was the only one who didn't catch on that he was just bull****ting....

I'd say that like you my conviction was facing out at foreign enemies, not defending the halls of a school. I'd love to see the 'gun' bearers switch careers and become educators or part-time protectors inside the schools. if you want more 'guns' in schools be one.

If I were not semi-retired and if I had the qualifications to be a teacher, I would be very willing to put my combat training and experience to use while I'm teaching the youngsters.

But...since I'm AM semi-retired and since I DON'T have the qualifications to be a teacher, I am perfectly happy to express my opinion on forums such as this one.

btw, my combat training and experience would be perfectly suitable and effective for defending the halls of a school.

She's in her late 50's...that's hardly "old". Heck, my ex-wife is in her early 50's and she hunts deer and elk every year.

The teacher also has a concealed carry permit and carries a .357 magnum. Somehow, I don't think she's likely to get pranked.

My combat training and experience wouldn't, there wouldn't be much left of said halls... ;)

Many security guards in schools are retired cops, don't need to hump a ruck or jump out of perfectly good aircraft... if middle aged females are expected to start carrying firearms and get into shoot-outs in crowded classrooms or long corridors then I'd reckon so too can semi-retired combat vets...

I see a lot of upside to semi-retired experienced folks, such as yourself, pulling guard over our precious ones.

First many 'conservatives' hate the idea of our education system spending billions more so stipends for vets in schools should warm the cockles of their thrifty hearts.

Next 'conservatives' feel teachers are just one May Day away from Stalinism, or too liberal weak to man-up and be responsible for the safety of their children with deadly force so few of them would want to CCW.

Next the part-time guards won't be Union positions and so would not be eligible for Obamacare insurance.

'Conservatives' can step up and show the weak liberals what a bit of steel behind a firearm can do for society. Who better to show everyone to include the children what positives comes from responsible firearm ownership? 'Conservatives' can start the long march back to a day when firearms were not feared on sight.

Anyway, sit and complain, demand others do the protecting, at the end of the day many 'conservatives' are more like the liberals they decry than they would care to admit.

Nothing wrong with that, just as long as we are honest about it... :peace

Who cares? I mean, about your combat experience? You don't want guards in schools anyway. You think taking away guns is a better course.

Besides the fact that your post is riddled with stereotypes, your whole basic point is wrong. Conservatives aren't "demanding others do the protecting". They simply want the opportunity to do the protecting. That opportunity is what liberals are determined to deny them.

And yet these 'conservatives' are drafting bills to require teachers to carry weapons, are demanding some one else do something, and when offered the opportunity to do just what you say, to step up and protect, they demur. Can't take advantage of the opportunity to protect our schools from the couch.

LOL!!!

Yeah...you should try to pass that line of BS on the lady who took her gun to school. What was stopping HER from standing up to protect the kids?

It would be great to have vets guard the halls of the fruit of our nation. Give them a sense of extra worth and welcome after they are done serving.

I wish the feds and states has this type of zero tolerance for domestic abusers, drunk drivers, dishonorable discharges and the mentally who somehow fly under the radar and get hold of a firearm.

When a sex offender is released from jail, the local police are notified. Why isn't this done for restraining orders, domestic abusers, dishonorable discharges, etc.? Letters should be automatically sent out informing local police that this person is not allowed to own a firearm. Police can ask for consent to search the home or apartment if they suspect the person is lying about owning a gun.

And if sex offenders are prevented from living near schools, then why shouldn't people with records or mental illness be prevented from living in homes with legal guns?

If your adult child comes home from jail to live with you, then an unsecured weapon should be a crime.

Jesus, it just occurred to me that if anyone on the NICS list uses a credit card at a gun store or internet site that sells guns, this should set off an alarm and a call to the local police department. There is no excuse for these safety measures not being in place.

Your comments, while important, really have nothing to do with this thread (we are talking about an employee of a school who is in her 50's) or about the Newtown event (that young man wasn't identified as anything for the police to be concerned about).

I suggest you start a thread on your topic.

Yeah...you should try to pass that line of BS on the lady who took her gun to school. What was stopping HER from standing up to protect the kids?

Her own stupidity for starters, can't defend too many kids when they arrest you for breaking the law, as with illegal immigrants- what part of illegal don't you understand?

But enough deflection, either 'conservatives' stand up to protect and that means going to the school administrations and working to set-up semi-retired combat vets with schedules to show the liberals what good can come from reasonable folks with firearms.

Orrrrr we quit bitching about paying taxes to hire folks that will do the protecting of our schools. You don't want to get a shovel and maintain our highways, we pay taxes for that.

Time to quit trying to do everything on the cheap and claim lowering taxes boosts the economy. Lowering taxes starves the system and it can't provide the services we suddenly discover would have been nice to have had inplace PRIOR to the mass murder in Conn.

Not Principles with M4s as one 'conservative' politician claimed. Not middle aged teachers with a bare minimum of training, not 'employees' with a wheel gun illegally in her locker...

A really thought out PROFESSIONAL plan that won't be cheap and won't be done by a hodge podge of amateurs which is what 90% of the teachers would be.

'Conservatives' are just like everyone else- have someone else do the heavy lifting, the talk of what one CCW could have done rings hollow because 99% of the CCWs out there are not really interested in anything more than protecting their own lives (nothing wrong with self preservation) and seem more interested in using the fig leaf of protecting society to cover firearm ownership... (as long as the firearm owners are up front about it, nothing wrong there either)

Do you recognize the difference between allowing, or even encouraging someone to do the right thing, and demanding it of them?

If people are going to shoot up kids in schools very soon we may discover the best places are where the goofy liberals live. What could be more just?

Rather than sacrificing our children you will get to sacrifice your own.

Wrong. It was the "no guns allowed" rule that stopped her.

But enough deflection, either 'conservatives' stand up to protect and that means going to the school administrations and working to set-up semi-retired combat vets with schedules to show the liberals what good can come from reasonable folks with firearms.

Again, lack of people willing to stand up is not the problem. Bleeding-heart-fear-of-guns rules are the problem.

Deflecting to taxes now, are we?

Not Principles with M4s as one 'conservative' politician claimed. Not middle aged teachers with a bare minimum of training, not 'employees' with a wheel gun illegally in her locker...

Now you are selling people short. What makes you think properly trained Principals, teachers, etc are any less capable of defending their students than anyone else?

A really thought out PROFESSIONAL plan that won't be cheap and won't be done by a hodge podge of amateurs which is what 90% of the teachers would be.

So, tell me...who is advocating for a professional plan? Conservatives? Or liberals?

'Conservatives' are just like everyone else- have someone else do the heavy lifting, the talk of what one CCW could have done rings hollow because 99% of the CCWs out there are not really interested in anything more than protecting their own lives (nothing wrong with self preservation) and seem more interested in using the fig leaf of protecting society to cover firearm ownership... Conservatives are definitely not like liberals. Especially liberals like you who think taking guns from everyone is the best course of action.

I know you are just having fun here...but your disingenuous course of discussion is getting tiresome.

Another law abiding citizen. She knew she didn't care and did it anyhow. WHo else thinks like that.

This woman thought like that.

Or.......
You could lend a little bit of perspective on life:

Not quite.

Those guards are almost always Israeli citizens coming off of their mandatory service and are hired as a contractor from an independent firm (yes, I've been there and talked to several of them). They are not there to protect kids from domestic shooters, but to protect them from the Arab terrorists who got past the checkpoints and walls. It's not the same thing. They are in a sense a backup layer of protection against Arab terrorists. And when you look at the weapons they carry, it's not really practical in the confines of a school. Plus, it's horribly expensive to keep them around all the time.

Furthermore, these guards are not dealing with a society that has rampant civilian gun use. Israel Society has far stricter gun control laws then America. So in a sense, the only real threat they'd face from a domestic shooter is a gun with a pistol. They are there to protect against Arab Terrorists. Not domestic shooters.

didn't this teacher get the memo?.... school children are not allowed to be protected by good people with guns.... they are only allowed to be gunned down by bad people with guns.

I don't see a problem with anything but the dummy having a "little mini-breakdown", and the snitch.

So you think its okay for teachers to carry guns to stop brown people with turbans but not white dudes? Does the turban and the accent make them that much more dangerous?
