P.E.I. drunk drivers' vehicles could get special plates

Why not just go directly to the scarlett letter.

And neither does "drunk driving".

You're right. The number is a relatively similar one that varies somewhat from year to year. Good catch.

We have these in Ohio. Our plates are normally blue lettering on white backgrounds, while the "I'm a drunkard" plates are red lettering on yellow backgrounds. They've been around for a while.

I believe you get the "party plates", as they are called here, if you have 3 DUIs or 1 high BAC DUI.

My question is if you have had multiple DUIs why are you still allowed to drive?

UI laws fly in the face of medical science because people who drink a lot develop a tolerance to alcohol.

For example, a 16 year old girl having her first wine coolers could be very significantly impared with a BAC of .08% while a 30 year old guy who drinks every day with the same BAC could be perfectly capable of driving safely.

DUI laws are about MONEY, not public safety or medical science.

That's actually kind of my point -- these license plates will never and could never warn us of all the dangers around us, it just shames previous offenders of a particular flavor. Why not ignition locks? Why not license revocations? In other words, why not just stick with solutions that actually prevent drunk driving, rather than shaming drivers for previous behavior?

We already have mandatory ignition interlock after a conviction of drunk driving and license suspension of min. of one year for a first offense. They are not working well enough. I think this is a great idea and another benefit would be the cops could pull the driver over for a spot check at any time.

Personally I think the ignition interlock is the best idea. They do need to modify the system so it's more like the home detention unit, where you have to stare into a camera when you blow into the device. That would stop the people who currently figured out a way around the device.

It's an unpopular view but I think that shaming is a viable alternative to prisons, the one size fits all solution to everything (unless you're a banker). Stocks and caning would probably get a lot of first time offenders back on track instead of sending them to crime school.

Why don't they work "well enough?"

What on earth does a license plate accomplish that an ignition lock or license revocation does not?

The cops can't, nor should they able to, pull over whomever they want. Not here, anyhow.

I'm not personally so interested in the shaming aspect of the idea, but I kind of like the prospect of being able to identify a repeat-risk drunk driver while I'm on the roads. Have you ever seen someone swerve while in front of you and yell, "Jesus! Is he drunk or something??" Now for the first time (at least if you live on Prince Edward Island) you'll get to think, "Yep! Might be!" and then put a nice and cozy distance between you and that driver.

Do you think repeat DUI offenders should be easily identifiable on the roads (besides how they're driving, of course)?
DUI should be a capitol offence.

If they are serial drunk drivers... like that kind that abound here in New Mexico, they'd just change plates to a stolen one.

As someone who lost his wife (and my daughter's their mother ) to a drunk driver 16 years ago,I have absolutely no sympathy for someone who gets drunk and gets behind the wheel of a car. That personal made a decision, and other paid the price for it.
It's easy for people to rationalize against those "special plates" when they don't have to tell their children why mommy or daddy is never coming home.
"Ohh that poor man with the licenses plate, his rights are more important than those he may,or already have, killed".
"His feelings are more important than the loved ones of the people he killed".

Won't someone please think of the children!!!!

God, I can't wait till we can have a debate on DUI where that dumbass argument isn't hauled out.

Won't somebody please think of the assholes who commit attempted vehicular manslaughter!!!

I have no problem with violent criminals being denied the right to own a gun. I have no problem with convicted pedophiles not being allowed to live near schools. And I have no problem with people who endanger the lives of others by driving drunk being publicly identified as the lethal hazard they are.

We already shame bad drivers here in america. We make them get florida license plates.

A day doesn't go by that I don't think about the drunk driver that killed my wife 15 years ago.
He got out of jail two years ago.
My wife is still dead.

I say we make everyone we don't like wear a badge to identify their depravity!

:boom

*LOL* Just another grand stupid idea.

HERE ARE A FEW MORE I’D LIKE TO SEE

“ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT”
“GAY”
“ WELFARE RECIEPTENT”
“I HAVE AIDS “
“DEAD BEAT DAD”
“CHECK BOUNCER”

Chit have an FBI background check on every person living in the United States, and your license plate will tell anyone driving behind you , your worse deed(s) a perfect way to know what sort of person we are dealing with right ??

In your link the CDC cites the NHTSB which is an untrustworthy source.

I've done research on how they come up with their bogus stats.

Even if a not at fault driver, a passenger or pedestrian was the person with a detectable amount of alcohol in their system, no matter how minute, they count that in there statistics.

So no, there is not 10,000 deaths caused by drunk drivers every year.

There is a revolving door between the NHTSB and prohibitionist groups such as MADD and the WCTU. These crazy religious nuts' agenda is to get alcohol banned.

Right, so far. That's how our justice system is supposed to work, isn't it? Aren't we supposed to stick to punishing people for what they've actually done, as a pose to what they might someday do?
DUI laws are based on the premise that you will cause unspecified damage to unspecified people or property at some unspecified location at some unspecified time in the future.

That's totally unreasonable and therefore unconstitutional.

A little nookie on the side doesn't kill 10,228 per year (unless that nookie is happening in speeding vehicles).

Nookie is a way to pass AIDS. If you have AIDS, you should wear a sign to let others know you have AIDS.

Forget the plates  Drink drive and you're an idiot. Repeat offenders should face jail time that increases in length with each conviction. Anyone caught drink driving while already disqualified for drink driving should also face mandatory imprisonment and their vehicles should be impounded while they are awaiting sentencing.

I like the European method. We caught you once...thanks for playing...no more driving for you.
