That whirring sound is Strom Thurmond spinning in his grave.

S.C. Gov. Haley appoints Rep. Tim Scott to U.S. Senate

Republican South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced Monday her decision to appoint Rep. Tim Scott to succeed Republican Sen. Jim DeMint—a decision she deemed "historic."

Scott, a tea party star, will become the first black Southern senator since the late 1800s. He first won election to the U.S. House in 2010 by beating out Paul Thurmond, son of former segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, in the Republican primary for South Carolina's 1st District. Upon his appointment, Scott will serve in the seat the elder Thurmond once occupied.

It's good to see Democrats aren't the only ones who play the 'first' game. Remember all the flack Democrats got for Obama being hailed as the first black president?

This guy intends to stand out. Tea Party darling he is:

He proposed a bill to kick families off of food stamps if one member went on strike as part of a union — he represents progress. And he called for the impeachment of Obama over the debt ceiling.

Congratulations to Rep. Tim Scott, this is indeed a historic pick.

The Collectivist Authoritarians on the Left are already calling him an Uncle Tom and claiming he is "black in skin only"

The only intolerance and bigotry being shown thus far are from your pals on the Left

ODS is strong with this one.

Please, share with us the grounds for impeachment of Obama based on the debt ceiling debate that you have found.

Republicans have put now 4 blacks in the Senate, the democrats only 3 (well technically 2.5). Who is the party of inclusion?

elected?

*edit nvm...

Four republican senators...

One was appointed. Two were elected in Mississippi by the Mississippi State Senate during the reconstruction era in the late 1800's where southerners were under strict electoral confines put on them from the north and only one was elected by popular vote.

Nice try there Fisher. But appointing an African American then claiming a high road of inclusivity... that is laughable.

Good on him and Haley as well. Let's hope he serves his constituents well.

"That whirring sound is Strom Thurmond spinning in his grave."

Actually it sounds more like Bill Clinton's hero, James William Fulbright. Try again.

Who will the blacks vote for, the Republicans or the Democrats?

Funny how are conservatives racist white men when a native American women govenor just appointed the only black senator.

I imagine the blacks will do what the whites will do, decide for themselves who they believe to be the better candidate based on their own values and beliefs.
