Mubarak had already made plans for a departure. It was to be in the fall not during the "arab" spring.
An organized departure on his part would have enabled his and the military's hand picked replacement
improve the situation in Egypt and avoid this kind of conflict - it certainly would have helped keep
islamic extremist from creating a sharia backed constitution.
The uprisng that ousted Mubarak wasn't about freedom and power by the way - it was about food.
The people were starving. That is what happens when a drought occurs; famine follows and the
masses in Egypt were in deed starving - look it up. The US could have helped with that to give
Mubarak the time needed to make the transfer of power to a new government, but we have
a pop star that needs attention and made the decision to publicly call for Mubarak to leave at
the height of the protests. That frenzy helped make it happen - the pop star even thinks he's
responsible for appealing to the masses.

What could the US have done differently to avoid this situation?
