Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood accused of paying gangs to rape women[W:58]

Mubarak had already made plans for a departure. It was to be in the fall not during the "arab" spring.
An organized departure on his part would have enabled his and the military's hand picked replacement
improve the situation in Egypt and avoid this kind of conflict - it certainly would have helped keep
islamic extremist from creating a sharia backed constitution.

The uprisng that ousted Mubarak wasn't about freedom and power by the way - it was about food.
The people were starving. That is what happens when a drought occurs; famine follows and the
masses in Egypt were in deed starving - look it up. The US could have helped with that to give
Mubarak the time needed to make the transfer of power to a new government, but we have
a pop star that needs attention and made the decision to publicly call for Mubarak to leave at
the height of the protests. That frenzy helped make it happen - the pop star even thinks he's
responsible for appealing to the masses.

What could the US have done differently to avoid this situation?

Such an evolved people.

And people worried the Egyptian military was not being democratic enough. *oops*

Actually Obama has not been silent on this issue...
Obama tells Morsi violence in Egypt 'unacceptable'
"The White House says President Barack Obama has called Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to express "deep concern" about the deaths and injuries of protesters in Egypt.

A White House statement says the president told Morsi that he and other political leaders in Egypt must make clear to their supporters that violence is unacceptable.

The statement Thursday night said that Obama welcomed Morsi's call for a dialogue with opposition leaders in Egypt but stressed that such a dialogue should occur without preconditions. "

Rape and murder is "unacceptable"?

And if it continues he will issue another strongly worded statement. That should send the Brotherhood reeling.

The Muslim Brotherhood is not monolithic.

They are certainly moving in that direction, and with more than a little success.

They have played the West like a finely tuned oud.

Do you have some sources? Like a source that says Egyptians were suffering a famine at the time, or that Mubarak had planned to leave in the fall? I found several sources that say food prices in Egypt had inflated before during and after the revolution, but that doesn't equate to a famine or a drought.

It wasn't like Russia was being "mean" they just had a major drought and needed it for themselves

Most Egyptians live on $2 a day and are unemployed.. It boiled over.

No .. the MB from country to country are NOT the same organization.. nor do they have the same methods or objectives or even philosophies..

To be fair few Americans know that.

BBC News - Russia to impose temporary ban on grain exports

The need for food can be quite motivating. One of the reason I disagree with libertarians about just dropping many US government
"programs" for the poor.

Yes food prices went up, grain cost more as a result of several factors, however that did not mean people were starving in the streets of Egypt as the word "famine" suggests. Anyway, famine or not what does this have to do with what the US government could have done differently to have somehow controlled the situation now?

The US chose to respond to the protests with encouragement for Mubarak to leave and hand control over to the military and generate elections; even after that happened the US encouraged the miliary to put off elections because the only party in town that could mobilize for an election was the Muslim Brotherhood. What could the US have done differently? Maybe instead of military aid we should have sent some grain / food at that moment to make it easier for the masses to get and maybe we should have let Mubarak take his extra 6 months to move out and select his replacement. We very easily could have exerted the same pressure on the replacement to give the people more rights - and more food! But no we had to but in and be popular - that is what rock stars do - not diplomats.

No, they are not the same from country to country though they have the same ambitions and are willing to go to any lengths to achieve them.

But we know that once they do take control they will be corrupt and inefficient, just like every other Muslim dominated country in the world, and soon they will be blasting away at each, just as their recent history also demonstrates.

I think you over estimate the motivation of food prices on the protesters, after all the food prices have gone down again but people are still protesting there.

The MB hasn't been involved in any violence since 1971.. I've been following them since the early 1960s.

There is a big difference between price increases and not having any. Russia had to cut them off due to their drought - it wasn't about paying a higher price they just flat didn't have it.
Egypt can't produce their own; they have to buy some where. Price increases and high unmployment made for some really unhappy people - it would here too.

Obama helped install Morsi? Really?

I guess the universe I've been living in must be different than yours. Mine seems to lack the hysteria.

Obama certainly supports the currant regime. Progressives to this day support the regime...

The Muslim Brotherhood is an Islamic extremist organization..... Hell, these nuts are only pondering about destroying the Pyramids, raping woman and imposing strict Sharia Law - meanwhile progressives in the US are crying over nativity scenes and Santa Clause with the assertion that it "violates their rights."

The issue here isn't that these knuckle dragging troglodytes are anything but what they are, as they are inbred half wit throwbacks who aligned themselves with the Nazis in ww2. The issue is whether Obama "installed" Morsi or "supports" him. Saying one supports democratic reform is a far different matter than saying one is happy with the results, and the realpolitic necessities of having to deal with the results of such reform does not imply actual support for the man or the benighted group he represents.

Obama still remains silent on the Muslim Brotherhood and Egypt's new dictator he helped install, amazing!

"Egypt’s embattled Muslim Brotherhood regime is paying gangs of thugs to rape women and beat men who gather in Tahrir Square to protest the power grab of President Mohamed Morsi, say activists.
In a bitter replay of the Arab Spring protests that brought down President Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago, protesters have flooded the Cairo square to denounce Morsi, who has stripped the judiciary of power and is rushing through an Islamist constitution. And while Mubarak is now in prison for using violence to quell protests targeting him, Morsi’s regime is now accused of doing the same.
“This is still happening now,” Magda Adly, director of the Nadeem Center for Human Rights, told The Times of London. “I believe thugs are being paid money to do this ... the Muslim Brotherhood have the same political approaches as Mubarak.”

Question now is, where is the obama media on this story?

I tell ya, you conservatives a so strung out on the media. Sometimes i wonder who you HATE more, the media or your president.

Hours after Mrs. Clinton's supportive visit Morsi took complete control of the government, the judiciary, and fired many of the military leaders.

Quite a different attitude than the one towards Israel.

Did Obama genuinely not know what would happen when he told Mubarak "it's time to go"?

Exactly. Liberals don't realize that we're doing the people in foreign nations a favor when we install a puppet dictator.

Sorry, I couldn't read anything after that opening. If you aren't right wing in your posts, the pope is a southern baptist.

He's just one of those that claims to be an independent when he's really just an embarrassed con after how W left their party. You'll see this in some "libertarians", too.
