HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck, whose pioneering style in pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms, has died. He was 91.

Brubeck died Wednesday morning of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd. Brubeck would have turned 92 on Thursday.

One of the greatest composers to ever grace a stage. His music was a fusion of jazz and classical, and he is the only composer in history who could take a chorale by Bach and set it to jazz. His music was in very non-traditional times. Take 5 was in tocatta time (5/4), and Blue Rhondo a la Turk was in 9/8 time. This was truly innovative at a time when no jazz group played outside of traditional 3/4, 4/4, or occasional 6/8 times.

Rip Dave. You are going to be sorely missed.

Bummer. I honestly thought he'd passed years ago, great musician.

Listening to Time Out as we speak...legendary recording, one of the greats of the jazz age, they'll be listening to this one centuries from now...

He was awesome, smooth off time jazz. If you ever heard "Take 5" you've heard him, huge loss to the music world.
 
One of my favorites from Dave Brubeck.

 
Great musician and will be missed in person but created a legacy that will continue for a long, long time.

You've never heard "Take 5"?

I'm going to have to assume that you just don't know that you've heard it. It's a standard in all the best lounges worldwide.
