Baby boxes are a revival of the medieval "foundling wheels," where unwanted infants were left in revolving church doors. In recent years, there has been an increase in these contraptions — also called hatches, windows or slots in some countries — and at least 11 European nations now have them, according to United Nations figures. They are technically illegal, but mostly operate in a gray zone as authorities turn a blind eye.

But they have drawn the attention of human rights advocates who think they are bad for the children and merely avoid dealing with the problems that lead to child abandonment. At a meeting last month, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child said baby boxes should be banned and is pushing that agenda to the European Parliament.

As usual, the United Nations doesn't understand the concept of how human rights work and is going to do more harm than good. I sincerely hope that the European Parliament does the right thing here and tells them to butt out of this.

I find it amazing that they estimate that 1 to 2 children are left at each location each year, yet they do not have exact figures. But based on this lack of data Hungarian child psychologist on the U.N. committee, Maria Herczog says, ""We have data to show that in some cases it's pimps, a male relative or someone who's exploiting the woman." They can collect data behind the reasons the boxes are being used, but do not have exact figures as to how often the boxes are being used? How are they collecting this data she speaks of if the mother and/or others using the box are remaining anonymous?

If a mother and/or others feel that the children must be left this way, and they are being adopted out of the hospital (as Jan was in the article) I do not see what the problem is?

Jonathan Swift made some pretty compelling arguments on the matter.

An Irish stew... Soylent Green style? :chew:

I don't see why a mother should be encouraged to abandon her children without answering for her decision.

I know, in a round about way, it's to discourage trying to actually commit infanticide - but still.

Giuliani already took care of it.

Article
Bahahahaha. I actually got half way through the article, getting rather pissed off, until my wife pointed out that it was the onion. I normally pick up on details like that much faster, but to be honest, that does sound like something Giuliani or Bloomberg would do.

It happens. It's getting harder and harder to sift satire from srs bsns these days, due to all them poes.

I don't think she should have to answer for her decision at all-- it's her prerogative, just as it is the prerogative of her husband (should she have one) not to accept a child she offers him. This is merely a more humane and less wasteful alternative to leaving such babies out for the wolves.

It just reaffirms my fervent support for birth control, early abortion and adoption being arranged early

This is a long standing tradition in many countries and I think its appauling that the UN is getting into this.

BTW. In England, these children were commonly given the last name of Temple since they were dropped off in churchs

Other than not literally having boxes, I am pretty sure we have some system like that is places in the US where people can drop off a baby it hospital/police stations and such no questions asked to avoid the newborn in the bathroom trashcan thing....

Didn't some state have this and people were ditching their teenagers and such?

Is this really the most earthshaking problem the UN feels it must immediately tackle? I mean, really?

Civil wars raging in Africa, Syria, Pakistan with its finger on the nuclear trigger and eyeing India with a "bring it, bro'" expression, Iran getting ready to create the means to "wipe Israel off the face of the map"... and the UN decides to go after those horrid "baby boxes" for abdoned infants so their cracked-out, crapped-out or otherwise desperate mothers don't just pop them in a plastic bag and head for the nearest dumpster... THIS is the global crisis to which the UN turns its attention.

The only thing the UN is good for is being a swirling cesspool of corruption and money laundering.
