CAIRO (AP) -- Opponents of President Mohammed Morsi have set fire to offices of his Muslim Brotherhood in several Egyptian cities, clashing with his supporters after the Islamist leader assumed sweeping new powers.

The question I always have to ask far right wingers like you is what should have been done instead?

And specifically what should Obama have done instead because that's where you're really going with all this, if Egypt ends up doing something you don't like, you'll blame Obama for having "helped" oust Mubarak...

I mean what was he suppose to do?

Send troops in to guard the Presidential Palace?

Carpet bomb the protesters?

I mean there's this almost arrogant presumption that you're able to control any event you like outside the US including a President being dumped by the sheer force and will of his own people.

Very simply, recall the ambassador and staff. Remove all US Government personnel from the country. Remove their ambassador and personnel from the United States, and suggest that no US Citizens travel to Egypt. Essentially cut off all official contact with the country.

This development is par for Egypt's post-WW II experience. Egypt has had leaders with strong powers, regardless of their overall ideologies. On account of its history, institutions, and its regional role, it is no accident that such leaders have ultimately consolidated significant power.

Egypt, despite its rhetoric on the recent Israel-Hamas conflict, played a constructive role. It confiscated arms that were being smuggled to the Gaza Strip. It took the lead on mediating a ceasefire. It did not waver on maintaining its bilateral peace treaty with Israel. All said, its approach did not undercut U.S. interests or those of key regional U.S. allies. Hence, the U.S. should not take any measures in response to this political development in Egypt.

If the POTUS had called him up and said you have my blessing to get tough with the protestors instead of saying to the press you must go, then we may have had a very different outcome than the Muslim Brotherhood ruling Egypt.

As for Morsi giving himself more power, that is pretty par for the course in modern Egyptian history.

I think it is clear by just watching what is said, and what isn't....For instance, Hamas has been spraying southern Israel with indiscriminate bombs, thousands of them for quite some time, targeting civilians purposely. Israel showing great restraint does not take action, but when they do, they are painted, and admonished to use restraint as if they are the aggressor....

Let's say the US and Mexico had similar questions as Isreal, like say the Meecha Movement. And let's say that MeeCha was the official government of Mexico, and wanted the SW US back. Would we put up with MeeCha firing rockets at US citizens across the borders?

Qaddafi was ousted in large part due to pressures from within his own country, and the support of the international community, which widely recognized him as an unstable and treacherous kook. In addition to his support for terrorist groups over the years, he also met those who dared protest his rule in his latter days with threats of genocide. How did you manage to miss all of that?

It leaves a power vacuum which the Muslim Brotherhood will fill.

Qaddafi was ousted in large part due to pressures from within his own country, and the support of the international community, which widely recognized him as an unstable and treacherous kook.

But do you know what or who will replace Qaddafi? We have already seen Americans murdered over there, including the US Ambassador, with no explanation from Obama. There will not be a response to those murders and the Libyan government had to know what was going on.

In addition to his support for terrorist groups over the years, he also met those who dared protest his rule in his latter days with threats of genocide. How did you manage to miss all of that?

I had and have no use for Qadaffi but, in recent years, he could be handled. Can the present and future regime be handled? I certainly don't know, but I doubt it.

Obama will make promises to everyone. Do you still believe him?
