Arlington Cemetery pic sparks outrage, calls for woman's firing

Works for a company that provides services for disabled vets, poses on company time, a photograph that could be taken the wrong way uploaded to Facebook, sparks public controversy....damages the company's reputation. Yeah, sounds like a legitimate problem for the company to me.

In the more public era of Facebook, it's time to face up to the facts that you should treat it like you are branding yourself. For instance, during the election cycle, I kept most of my opinions quite quiet in comparison with some folks that used it to blare out controversial/obscene statements. Photographs are carefully evaluated for whether or not I would be okay with professionals seeing it. I also lock my profile down. It's a good habit for folks to follow. Inhibition, folks.

Absolutely. It would be like me going to a convention and getting popped for a drunk and disorderly, the company won't care about partying within reason, but anything illegal, unethical, or otherwise associated with my trip that reflects badly is subject to termination.

A decent chunk of the time, so does her off time. Many businesses, organizations, or government work see the internet space, where your credentials and data are constantly linked to the company/org./government, as an extension of their image.

It's a real shame she got fifteen minutes of fame... even fifteen seconds... over this stupid photo.

Her Dad needs to smack her in the mouth and otherwise we should just f'gettaboutit.

Some great source material for Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

What a cringe-worthy show, and idea.

Larry contributes to a good cause like a soldiers fund or something and then does that, spreads throughout his Twitter feed or something and disaster strikes to those he knows? :p

I think she should be gone. She works for a friggin vets groups for crying out loud.

Hey employer should do what is in its best interests. I don't believe her actions, however distasteful, are going to reflect so poorly on them that they need to dismiss her-- can anyone posting in this thread even remember their name off-hand?-- but I'd say they'd be within their rights to do so. This wasn't something she was doing in the privacy of her own home.

Yes, the name is Living Independently Forever. I posted its statement earlier in the thread.

I would fire her if I was in their position.

What I want to know, is shouldn't there be a Marine guarding the Tomb of the Unknown authorized to use his rifle to butt-stroke her face in this scenario? I'd trade for that instead of the firing.

Behaving like a childish idiot isn't a crime, and any employer who fires her is looking at a pretty nasty first-amendment based wrongful termination suit.

First amendment protects you from the government, not from being fired by your employer.

Frankly, I think she's dumber than a sack of hammers to have thought such a stunt would be well-received on the internet, but when I hit the "submit" button on this post, I will already have forgotten her.

Dumb is being kind. Have never been to Arlington but always assumed the Tomb of the Unknowns on an afternoon would have a number of people visiting it. Forgetting the legalities of getting fired or the consequences of posting it in your Facebook I think she is damn lucky there wasn't a vet there who witnessed that. That could have gotten ugly.

I have been to the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor and there too is that silence respect as you look down at the resting place of all those sailors. I can't imagine anybody doing something like that there.

Who seriously cares? It's silly humor is all.

She was on a company-paid trip, and her manager took the pic. She has been placed on leave. That company, Living Independently Forever, Inc., apparently does provide services to disabled vets.

Im all about free speech and god bless the rights of the stupid to do stupid things. The Old Guard reps showed class this woman will never possess in their response. However...where she is actually employed by a company that provides service to disabled vets? Yes...I think both her and her managers employment with that company should end. If one of my employees did it they would be gone before they got back from their company funded trip.

Hmmm... I like it.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Marine had the same thought at the time. Of course, the Marines are respectful of their location and position, and know better about "time and place".

No social boundaries? At all? Ever? Anything goes?

Stone has resigned. LIFE, Inc. (Living Independently Forever) has issued this statement:

We wish to announce that the two employees recently involved in the Arlington Cemetery incident are no longer employees of LIFE. Again, we deeply regret any disrespect to members of the military and their families. The incident and publicity has been very upsetting to the learning disabled population we serve. To protect our residents, any comments, however well-intentioned, will be deleted. We appreciate your concern and understanding as we focus on the care of our community,” the statement reads.

Really. People are getting mad about this?
A picture of a woman pretending to shout next to a sign that says be quiet.

Really.

Yes. Because he thinks this isn't worth getting outraged over, he must mean that people can literally take a dump on your dinner table because there are no social boundaries. :roll

She was on company time, so its at their discretion.

It is freedom of speech and expression. If it had been on her own time, then I would fully be against firing her. On a company that works for vets...they really have no choice at all. They have to let her go at this point.

Under the circumstances as we now know them, that was the exact right thing to do.

When will people learn?

If the woman was pretending to shout next to a "please be quiet" sign at a library, would anyone be upset?

It she sold books to libraries, they'd be justified.
