Man with strange watch arrested at Calif. airport

Sigh. I have two flash units for my camera, Nikon SB-800s, each packing enough wallop to kill a horse. Never once had an issue getting them on a plane. You are not safe. You never were. You never will be.

Maybe. But taking very suspicious items onto an aircraft is sure to get attention.

He got it.

The only people that item may have been suspicious to is the TSA.

Are you kidding me? Anyone with high school science knowledge can make a bomb. Drano and aluminum foil they call a "bomb" these days. Making things explode is easy, it's the reverse which is hard.

I don't think he even user matches, lit some fireworks or knows how a bullet fires from a gun seeing how he thinks bombs are complex and require a bit of intelligence to make an explosive.

As claimed by whom? MacGuyver? Bombs are from what I've seen are pretty complex and require quite a bit of intelligence to make. You ever seen a dumb bomb maker? I haven't. Even expert bomb makers can screw up and get a finger blown off from time to time.

Not really. I built one when I was 15 or so. I wasn't very smart back then, or I wouldn't have built it.
Oh, no I wasn't a terrorist, just a dumb kid who wanted to see something go boom, and it did. I still have scars from it, too.

We used to do it too but I have no scars from it.

Seems they let him go, and finally took a picture of this strange watch. I have to admit, it does look a bit strange:

OAKLAND -- The Alameda County District Attorney's Office has declined to file charges against a Southern California artist and teacher arrested last week at Oakland International Airport for wearing a suspicious watch.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office on Monday did not elaborate on why charges weren't filed against Geoffrey McGann, 49, of Rancho Palos Verdes.

Clearly a work of art. TSA was just trying to oppress him.

If he sat in the seat next to me and I saw that thing I would have beat him silly disarming his butt....

The Steampunk excuse won't do here because of the fuses and wires. I say we shoot the bastard and get on with our lives.

Yeah, James that seems to have been built just like the firecrackers you were talking about earlier.
How does a crappy watch change the fact that you severely over estimated the difficulty in making an explosive device?

My watch has fuses and looks exactly like a detonator, and I have giant stuffed boots. So? I didn't expect that to be a problem.

:rolleyes

What really did him in was that he ran into his friend Jack at the airport, and yelled "Hi Jack!"

A crappy watch that would at the very least raise suspicions and at most not allow you on any flight.

But yeah, seems to have just about the complexity of a firecrack. Maybe you were thinking of a pipe bomb?

My he said "I got shotgun" to indicate that he has dibs on the front passenger seat?

A bomb is nothing more than combustion under pressure. A 40lb propane tank is a bomb big enough to level a decent sized house.

Very simple. You take something that combusts, put it into a box, light it, and run.

I once said bomb at an air port.

On a serious note, someone trying to get an actual bomb onto a plane isn't going to have it in plain sight.

Even if it wasn't an explosive device, you would think that people would have the brains to not bring such things to the airport or on the plane with them. They should be charged for being idiots and holding up everyone else at the very least . . . if it isn't a real device that is.

Yeah, tons of people trying to walk into airports with 20kg propane tanks.

What kind of idiot goes to the airport with THAT strapped to his wrist???? The jerk deserved to be "inconvenienced". What a putz.

Bingo!
